Magical dog-leash romps
through frosted streets and princess crystal iced trees.. clear sailing ahead!
Nothing could be more “Canadian” than a winter day like this!
Thick flocked fences lined our streets that morning.. I love hoar frost!
In Calgary, we often are gifted this beautiful visual experience due to warmer Chinook winds colliding with our seasonally cold northern temperatures.
With both fur and jackets to warm..
I’m in North Face and Bella’s wearing North Fetch!
It’s all in a dog day’s work..
but learning new commands deserves special
Homemade Dog Treats!
We’ve named these Bella’s Biscuits!
This recipe is easy to mix up and rolls out smoothly.
You can cut out little shapes.. dog bones, of course.. and these hearts..
because we love our puppies!
Then you bake up these little dog biscuits..
and the scent of cinnamon, peanut butter, oatmeal, and chicken
will have your puppy sitting and begging in no time!
♥
One batch made this many..
But I think there are already a few missing..
Bella must have had to do some tasting for research!
{ These can be made all organic or with just ordinary, every day ingredients on hand.
- 1/2 cup (180ml) warm water
- 3/4 teaspoon Liquid Chicken Bouillion
- 1 2/3 cup All-Purpose flour
- 1/3 cup Rye flour
- 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/3 cup (55g) oatmeal
- 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 egg, lightly whisked
- 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
- 1/2 cup (104 ml) applesauce*
- * I used one of those small single serving cups of applesauce, which is just under 1/2 cup.
- Preheat the oven to 350F.
- Prepare three baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper or silpat liners.
- Stir the liquid chicken bouillon into the warm water and set aside.
- In a mixer fitted with a dough hook, mix the two flours, brown sugar, oatmeal and cinnamon until blended together.
- With the mixer on low, add the egg, then the peanut butter and the applesauce. Add just enough chicken broth, mixing until the dough comes together and clings to the dough hook. Mix for a few minutes more, then turn out onto a lightly floured surface.
- Knead, sprinkling with very small handfuls of all-purpose flour as needed until the dough is soft, pliable but no longer sticky. Separate the dough into two or three pieces.
- Roll out one piece of dough until it is quite thin, about 1/8 - 1/4” thick as these will puff up in the oven. Cut with cookie cutters and place on prepared baking sheets.
- Bake in the oven for about 10-15 minutes or until the dog biscuits have lightly browned and somewhat hardened. Remove to a cooling rack where they will dry and harden further.
- Store cooled biscuits in an airtight container. Some may be frozen then thawed out as needed.
Now, wouldn’t these make a pretty Valentine’s gift for your puppy?
Then you’d better get baking!

This post was written for The Canadian Food Experience Project where we share our collective stories through our regional food experiences and hope to bring global clarity to our Canadian culinary identity. February’s theme is: A Canadian Love Affair. I know I’m a bit early, but thought you might want to bake up a few treats for your puppy for Valentine’s Day.
For me.. nothing feels more Canadian than when we bundle up and walk our dog on a splendid snowy winter’s day!
Yay. I love the idea of home made doggie treats
Brrrr! It looks chilly outside! But Bella can keep you company inside in front of a fire, warm and toasty and enjoy her homemade treats!
Your winter snow photographs are beautiful Barbara! Bella is so cute! It looks really cold there, we are also experiencing really cold weather too. It was 3 degrees when I got up this morning, our low was -2 but it is suppose to warm up today! 🙂
Did you see my post on making Crème Brûlée!
Look at your stunning photos and beautiful little Bella there enjoying the snow and looking so glam! Our pups don’t really know about snow but they would definitely enjoy these treats, I need to get baking for them soon 🙂
How cute! The dog biscuits sound great for pups!
I love those beautiful trees all covered in white. They are gorgeous and little Bella is a cutie! I would love to make these biscuits. Thanks for reminding me to bake a little Valentine’s treat for our sweet Zena! 🙂
These doggie treats are to die for, that is so cute 😀
Cheers

I love the snow images. How picturesque and special it is. I would love to take a stroll through your part of the world. I love Bella’s little treats. It’s so good you make them for her – they’re not only gorgeous and made with love, you know exactly what’s in them. I love her ruby-red coat! xx
What a lucky little girl! I know a few furry friends who’d love these.
Such lovely photos! We like to complain about winter, but thanks for the reminder not to overlook its beauty. These biscuits look like the perfect ❤️ gift for Olive, Sadie & Benny, the pups in our family.
Bella is really a cutie! And these biscuits look great. What a nice treat! Fun stuff — thanks.
Thanks, John:)
It’s the height of summer here in Australia on Australia Day holiday. Looking at that snow and coldness reminds me so much of growing up in Maine.
Bella is adorable!! I think my Charlie might like some of bella’s biscuits too.
Oh.. I’d love to see Charlie:D I’m dog crazy these days!!xx
Bella is getting so big. She is adorable and man’s best friend. I bet she does not even want to go out for a wee when it is super cold and the snow is high. I know that both your Bella and my Buddy would be head over heels or maybe paws over these little treats. I like to know what is really in their treats so making your own is a great way. Stay warm! BAM
Those are beautiful photos Barbara! And what a lucky Bella! 🙂
Love you winter, stunningly captured … ours is just now falling gently on us, but I don’t think it will be that heavy and it’s still not so cold. Could do with some of the that blue sky of yours.
Bella – what a little beauty and … and looking at those cakes I would love to be a little beauty in pink in your household too. *smile
Your photography is always so beautiful. I love how you captured the sun bouncing off the icy snow. Beautiful!
And thank you for this great dog treat recipe. I plan on making a batch of these for my Duncan (maltese/yorkie mix) this weekend 🙂

Bella is just adorable! And the weather looks so magical. We never see snow here!
I will be sharing these treats with my old boy! I think they’ll be after bath treats, because he gets so messy when we have been walking on the beach.
I have recently started a recipe sharing site (food photo site) specifically for pet treats, as I found the big food sharing sites, don’t always accept treats for our fur babies!
I would love to have you submit your recipes and photos.
