“In My Kitchen”
for March, 2014
♥
Welcome to Smidge’s kitchen!
Let’s begin with the kitchen island, shall we, where it looks like a “Produce Bomb” has gone off.
I’ve just returned from a grocery run and, by special request, have been preparing veggies for our Vegan Bowl again, with a few changes and repeats.
I figured it was best to roast up all the veggies at once at the start of the week and have them ready for quick lunches and dinners.
Beets, sweet potatoes and chick peas got the roasting of their lives.
This time I omitted some of the seasoning so that they can be changed up when making a healthy bowl..
cumin one day, cinnamon the next and so on.
The next few suspects are clues to my newest Bowl creation..
I want to make a Mediterranean Bowl with flavors from Italy!
This is my favorite gluten-free pasta.. look for the little bunny on the package!
This tray is often stacked with pretty cups and linens, lately it’s filled with healthy (and some vegan) ingredients like chia seeds,
hemp, pumpkin seeds, dates, bee pollen, honey, raw almonds, etc.
This way they’re ready to scoop up
for a lunch Bowl or Acai Breakfast Bowl.
These three ingredients came from Blush Lane, I can’t wait to turn them into some sort of Protein Bar in the next few days.
I know what I want it to taste like, I’ve just got some experimenting to do to get there!
These pretty daffodils were a gift from our friends on Saturday, thank you Noah and Tomas!!
The little vintage scale you see tucked behind was a lucky find at one of our local antique stores.
I love that it’s old but barely used, so it looks new.
{ I love little bits of vintage decor, but not too shabby! }
Here was another favorite find, I have two of these large vintage turquoise Gem mason jars
along with my smaller jar collection.
{ I was hoping to have my mason jar craft ready for you, but I’m having difficulty sourcing “Ball” jars and will have to order them online. }
Here is my newest spring Tablescape decorated with ombre faux tulips!
{ You can tell I’m desperately trying to push spring ahead by quite a few weeks! }
My parents tell me that the crocuses and daffodils are already blooming in Victoria!
I totally got this idea from Pottery Barn but changed the vases up to suit my style.
I tied a knot of wide, wired burlap ribbon around each and that’s it!
I have some Statistics notes and an Art History textbook in my kitchen.
{ thank goodness they’re not mine.. well, I wouldn’t mind that Art class }
Can you understand what this says? I sure can’t!
Kids these days are amazing!!
And here is a letter addressed to my daughter,
it’s a reminder me that she’ll officially be a Petroleum Land Management Grad in only a few months..
and our lives will change forever.
I wanted our kitchen island to be one flat counter section, so there was room to cook and bake on one side and room for piles of homework on the other side. A few years ago we bought each of our children their own desk, so that they could study in the quiet and privacy of their rooms.
That was so unnecessary!!
Because every single day both of my kids sit at the island doing their homework,
while I cook on the other side. They have done this for at least the last 18+ years of school..
and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
How boring my island will look when there is no longer this disarray of stacked books, pens, binders, headphones, headbands, and car keys!
I think of the conversations that I will miss.
I was worried that the meal I would be making might be a little on the “healthy vegan” side for a young man with a Big Appetite..
and this is what he told me,
“Mom, you make it, I’ll eat it!”
I think Bella’s trying to say the same thing..
Now, our family room is right next to our kitchen, so technically this isn’t “In My Kitchen” but I had to show you..
I have SUN in my home today!!
{ and it was only -19C }
Thanks so much for stopping in today, I hope I brought you a wee bit of
♥
Now that you’ve had a little tour around my kitchen,
make sure you head over to the lovely Celia’s where you can meet all of the other bloggers who are also contributing to
In My Kitchen!
You can join in the fun too, just post your own “In My Kitchen”, let Celia know and link back to Celia’s at the start of each month!
Oh look at this I am the first one to comment on your post. Today is my lucky day. Beautiful kitchen you have and you have so much bright sunshine coming in there today. Today even though it is a steamy 60 degrees F in Hong Kong today I can’t see my hand in front of my face due to all the humidity and some “Other stuff” in the air. I would love to be on the delivery end along with your boy and Bella for one your delicious Italian veggie bowls. Have a super day. BAM
It is your lucky day, Bam! I can’t imagine having air like that, is it difficult to breathe in that humidity? I wish you were on the receiving end as well:) xx
I love your kitchen despite the fact that my ENTIRE cooking space would fit on your counter. {envy}
Gorgeous photos, lady!!
Just look what you and your kitchen can make, Movita, now I have envy:) When I was your age (there I go again) my tiny kitchen had only two little countertop spaces on either side of the sink and a fridge and stove beside each other.. and never in a million years would I be making the kinds of things you are and never in a billion years could I have had a blog at that age! Just look at all you’ve accomplished! There’s no stacked meringue dessert in my kitchen at the moment:) I’ll have to do something about that!
Awesome, Barbara! Loved everything, absolutely everything, it was like being right there next to you!
lovely!
Thanks, Sally.. wish it were possible:)
Smidge, your kitchen (and home) are beautiful! I love the life lived in your kitchen, all the mason jars, and the excitement around healthy food 🙂 What a fun tour!
It’s fun cooking and baking with older children, they can help in so many ways! I didn’t have to do any dishes last night:) And Katie often cooks along with me, I’m a lucky mom!
A lovely kitchen that reflects you and your artistry! I also like the Legends Never Die shirt 🙂
That’s such a nice compliment, Sue.. and I’ll let Phil know about his shirt:D
Oh Smidge, your kitchen is exquisite. I can only dream of such a wonderful kitchen. I would be in the kitchen all day every day in your beautiful home.
Thank you for taking us on a tour of your kitchen. I am hoping you will share more with us next month again.
Your kids will always return home at some stage. We will have to keep you company in the meanwhile.
Have a beautiful day.
🙂 Mandy xo
I feel so lucky, as I was mentioning to Movita, my kitchens in my younger years were quite tiny. One apartment had only counter on either side of the sink and I remember another house had a portable dishwasher with a big wooden cutting block on top where I’d try to roll out pie crust. You know.. I think I will have to write about that, the kitchens I’ve had over the years are so interesting! And yes, Mandy.. you will be there to keep me company for sure:) xx
Faux tulips? They’re beautiful! Girl, you go right ahead and push spring along … I’m right there with ya. Oh the signs of life our kids bring ~ bless this mess, kind of abundant living. I have many fond memories of conversations that happened at our bar as I prepared meals. Sigh.
Your produce haul stirred my heart to dream of cooking, creating, and savoring again … soon. Thanks for giving us a peek into your kitchen, what a treat. 🙂
Honestly, Judy, this has really been the coldest winter in a long time! I think whatever cold front this is will be gone by Saturday. I am glad my writing brought back some wonderful memories for you, Judy.. these years go by so fast, but it never feels like it when you’re right in the middle of it, does it?xx
Lovely peek! What a wonderful space.
🙂
-19! Jeepers that’s cold – I should think you’re soaking up every last ray of sunshine. Lots of good things in your kitchen.
Oh, Anne.. it was minus 40 the other night. It’s so cold you couldn’t imagine walking in it at all, just running from the house to the car!
I love how you went ahead & took a photo of the island after it had been produce bombed! Try as I may with keeping the clutter to a minimum, things seem to accumulate faster than I can keep up & I always have to push things down to one end to get a photo of what I’d like. Now, from what I can see of your island it looks very similar to the granite we put on ours. I really wish that we had done the larger island with seating many years ago because it’s great to have company in the kitchen.
I’ve noticed that tray in other posts of yours and love it. Where did you ever find that? Perfect for the jars that you have there. We went through a drought of Ball jars here in the States a few years ago but now we have them aplenty.
Glad to see your sunshine – we all need some but a little heat would be good too.
I clean up the clutter when we’re having company, Diane, otherwise I have pretty much given up, lol! That’s when I remind myself that these years will go by so fast, I’d better embrace it all! That tray was from Pottery Barn a year ago, I really need to get a job there.. then I’d get the discount:) I think they still have them and they can be ordered online? xx
Thanks Barbara – I’ll have to check them out. I love Pottery Barn & just ordered a new bathroom sink from them when we remodeled the kitchen.
Lovely looking spring spread today!
Thank you:)
What a charming kitchen you have, full of lovely food, flowers and memories too. 😀 I really thought those tulips were real you know!!!
Haha.. I wish they were, Cathy! I would love to have those tiny flowers in my yard like you have in yours:) You’ve got a wee bit of spring now, lucky you!!xx
I can’t believe those tulips are faux! I want some now- our garden is dessicated from the searing heat of summer without rain ( Melbourne) You have some beautiful things in your kitchen.
There’s so much global warming, there is so much drought in places like yours now and southern California! I’ve read about almond crops being dug up because there’s just no water! I hope you get some rain there soon, Francesca!
Thanks for the peek into your kitchen. My daughter used our island bench for homework and chit chat while I cooked. Now she’s the mother of a young family, she redesigning her kitchen to make space for an Island bench so she can recreate the space she loved so much.
What a lovely story that is, Sandra, it just shows us how much influence our actions have on our children! xx
Good evening Barbara, your kitchen is beautiful and lovely decorated! Wonderful post, love all the pictures! The colors, the granite, flowers, vintage mason jars, scale, mixer, pedestal and coral, jar of colored straws?… just everything you have used to decorate makes is a special room to hang out! 🙂 I have the color Kitchen Aid 6 qt. mixer, don’t you just love using it?
Love your post!!! 🙂 Wish you had one of my cutting boards in your pictures!
Michael
Your kitchen looks so spring Smidge. You’ve got such brightness happening. It makes me warm just looking at it. 🙂
Wow! What a tour. I love your ‘joy’. And I’m sure I saw a candle with ‘Sydney’ on it. I love your overhead lights and your kitchen looks like a place where everyone is welcome. I love how your kids do their homework right next to you. Your son is very good looking and I love how appreciative he is of your cooking. The tulips in the jars look stunning xx
Your kitchen, Barb, is every bit as nice as I thought it would be. All the veggies on the island make me think the photo was taken last Summer, after you’ve returned from the farmers market. Cannot wait until that is actually the case. Daffs blooming in Victoria??? With snow expected later today, it will be weeks before we see the ground, let alone flowers blooming. Thanks for giving us a peak behind the magic curtain. 🙂
‘produce bomb’ ha ha – describes my kitchen but it’s much less elegant 🙂
That’s a great island! Great kitchen, actually, but the island is wonderful. And what a great haul of veggie on it! Fun post — thanks.
Thanks for the look into your gorgeous kitchen, it is bursting with light and flowers 😀
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
Smidge, you KNOW that I’ve crossed my fingers and held my breath and hoped that we’d see an IMK post from you one day! How exciting that you’ve joined in, thank you so much for playing. Everything is glorious and light in your kitchen – hard to believe it’s so cold and miserable outside. And how wonderful to have your kids sitting at the bench working while you cook – memories like that are gold and last forever! xx
Celia.. I’m so happy to be a part of your monthly IMK posts! It’s been fun meeting other bloggers from Australia too:)
Just how I expected your kitchen to be … full of action, herbs and vegetables. A kitchen I could spend hours in … welcoming, warm and relaxing. A living kitchen. Do you have a little new Bella ??????
Congratulations to your daughter, wonderful news.
And I love your table setting .. with the burlap, great idea … and so fresh, stands fantasticly against the color tulips.
You have just created the perfect centrepiece to your home with that island. You know that any time you have friends over everyone will congregate there to chat before sitting down to eat (probably eating snacky treats you have prepared !). If you were in college and there was a party, the best conversations would happen around that island 😉
Gosh, Barbara your kitchen is stunning!! I love all of these pictures, vases, flowers, jars, chocolate chips, etc. haha! I have those same jars, the chocolate chips and the same kind of pasta! I love burlap too. I did my best friends wedding shower and I made centerpieces with glass and rustic sticks with burlap laid underneath. I love the look of rustic burlap offset with dressy glass. 🙂
[…] here’s a controversial item that I bought from the Pottery Barn catalog. Barbara from Just a Smidgen was kind enough to tell me where she found hers after I saw it in one of her IMK posts. See all of […]
