The cookies of your hands (and your daughter’s), of course, are beautiful, Smidge. (Everything that comes from your hands IS, always IS.) But even more beautiful than that, the beauty that flows (through your words) from the warmth of your heart. To lose a friend so young, so soon, will be a hurt slow to heal. I’m so sorry for your family in this, Barb. May Grace surround and blanket you, and above all, may it be a gentle and Peaceful Christmas!! xxx

TasteFoodDecember 19, 2012 - 10:40 am

Amen! Thank you for your grace-ful thoughts and Happy Holidays to you. I am going to start with your butter tarts…

littlecitybotDecember 19, 2012 - 10:46 am

those snowy cookies look AMAZING.

Eva TaylorDecember 19, 2012 - 10:52 am

I am so sorry for your loss.
What a lovely round up of Christmas baking, Barbara, and it’s so nice that your daughter helped you bake. I have very fond memories of my Mom helping me bake even after she became ill (I set up the dining room table as her work station). Such a lovely bonding time too. The butter tarts look unbelievable, you’ve captured them perfectly, I can almost taste the crisp crust and the delicious centre, and I don’t mind at all if it runs down my chin.

SarahDecember 19, 2012 - 11:10 am

Oh Barb, “Grace” is beautiful. I love these words. No one could write anything as beautiful as your words. I’m so sorry about the loss you’re enduring right now, so painful.

I’m so glad you and daughter got to spend time together baking. It sounds like the perfect thing to do right now. We wish you the happiest, merriest Christmas my dear. And, a wonderful 2013. Thank you for everything!

CathyDecember 19, 2012 - 11:20 am

Yum, Yum and more Yum! What beautiful photos and delicious recipes! I love the sound of those buttery tarts, and even though I’ve been in Germany for so long I’ve yet to make Pfeffernussen…. they do look good. Thanks for such a lovely post!

Judy @Savoring TodayDecember 19, 2012 - 12:22 pm

Grace, unmerited favor we so desperately need. Beautiful sentiment, Barb, so timely and true. Even one day in the kitchen baking is better than none and even better when shared with someone. :) I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a blessed and prosperous New Year!

Loving your cookie collection, how wonderful to be baking and bonding with your daughter..

Sue Schlabach 129twigandvineDecember 19, 2012 - 3:15 pm

May you too have grace this holiday season. We’ve been baking cookies a batch at a time. I love the array you’ve done, but I never quite pull that off. I may mix up chocolate crinkles tonight (I love your crackle top snowy mountain name for them!).

ChgoJohnDecember 20, 2012 - 7:43 am

This is a wonderful post and “Grace” a beautiful tribute to you departed friend. So sorry to read of your loss, Barb.
This is a fantastic collection of cookies! You and your daughter obviously work well together or, at the very least, you’re both are willing to set aside your differences for the good of the cookies. One must always put the welfare of the cookies above all else. :)

Bam's KitchenDecember 20, 2012 - 7:57 am

thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. A very beautiful tribute to your friend. Of course spending a little time with your daughter baking is a very treasured event as well. Love all the cookies but the crackle cookies are my favorite. Take care, BAM

What a touching poem and lovely round up of cookies! I normally take a whole day off to devote to cookie baking but could not this year. Seeing yours makes me wish I did! I will have to note these for next year! Happy holidays Barb!

Your cookies look divine. I’ve always wanted to learn how to make Pfeffernussen ( and wondered even more how to spell it…) Don’t you just love the Contessa? xx

Three Well BeingsDecember 22, 2012 - 10:35 pm

i’m so touched by your words on grace, Smidge. It’s one of my favorite words, and I try to absorb the meanings more and more into my life, and spread the same to others. I think this may be one of my favorite from among the many lovely selections you offer us. You have such a beautiful talent with your words.

As a quick aside, I’m a huge Anne Lamott fan, and enjoyed seeing you used one of her quotes. And what lovely recipes. Thank you! If I don’t have another chance to say it before Tuesday, I certainly wish you a wonderful grace-filled Christmas, my friend. Blessings to you and your family through the entire Christmas season, and much love and peace into the new year. oxo

KarenDecember 23, 2012 - 6:23 pm

The cookies are as lovely as your words. Have a wonderful Christmas with your family.

helene dsouzaDecember 26, 2012 - 6:46 am

They all sound new to me, except the Pfeffernüsse cookie, but I haven’t had it in a long time. The best part of making Christmas cookies are sometimes the spices. That’s the only time when you get the chance to use them in sweets and the European will love it. Thank you for the cookie introduction +Recipes.

I adore Nanaimo bars. I had to buy Bird’s custard just for that!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenDecember 29, 2012 - 10:54 pm

Aren’t they just the best? Sadly.. I dropped the bag as I was transporting them to the freezer.. funny how I still manage to salvage a few bites by putting the appropriate pieces in my hand before scarfing them down, lol! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Gretchen! I can’t wait to visit your blog and see your latest news! xx

Harriet’s Remarkable Fudge and Her Icebox Scotch Shortbread

Sometimes we are blessed with the love and guidance of parents and, if we’re lucky, we are blessed to have a close relationship with our grandparents ♥ My Granny was the “go to” person when my parents “didn’t (or wouldn’t?) understand”. She was my “home away from home” on summer holidays, the purveyor of vintage…

So touching, these meaningful memories of your gran.

Carolyn ChanSeptember 4, 2012 - 2:36 am

What a wonderful woman your Gran was. Such a beautiful, touching story, Smidge.

vivekaSeptember 4, 2012 - 4:01 am

Here we are again admiring your beauty in words, baking, photos and layout. What a fantastic beautiful tribune to your grandma – I wish I could … but I can’t – too much hurt and pain connected to my grandma, but I don’t really blame her as such – she didn’t know any better, because that was the way she was treated as a child.
Love Scottish shortbreads – they melt on the tongue – the fudge, even if I like sweet things … a bit too much for me, but a stack of shortbreads with a pink ribbon around will make my day. Beautiful

imagesbytdashfieldSeptember 4, 2012 - 4:39 am

Can’t do the fudge but down with the cookies. And Grandma/Nana’s rock!

ValSeptember 4, 2012 - 5:02 am

Eva TaylorSeptember 4, 2012 - 5:30 am

Lovely memory you have Smidge, thanks for sharing. Love the recipes too.

hotlyspicedSeptember 4, 2012 - 5:42 am

I love fudge. What a wonderful grandma you had. It’s so sad that our grandparents are old by the time we meet them. They are the most wonderful people and clearly you had a great relationship with your grandmother. I love how she kept hand-written recipe cards. Our generation will have nothing as precious as that – everything we have is on the computer and no where else! I love the look of the fudge too – I used to make fudge when I was a little girl from some old hand-me-down recipe. It was one of the first things I learned to cook and I loved it because it was so sweet xx

sallybrSeptember 4, 2012 - 5:44 am

Just beautiful… I have some memories of my grandma related to cooking. She was the one who showed me how to dice an onion back when I was about 8 years old, and even though she obviously had no training in cooking schools, she did it exactly like a chef would do (I only realized that many years later)

Fudge was something quite present in Phil’s family while he was growing up in Michigan – his Grandma made a spectacular fudge and now I wonder if I could be able to make your recipe and surprise him.

loved the photos, loved your tribute to your sweet Grandma

thekalechroniclesSeptember 4, 2012 - 7:02 am

What a lovely tribute to your grandmother, Smidge.

ChgoJohnSeptember 4, 2012 - 7:17 am

Such a wonderful post, Barb, and tribute to your Grandmother. She sounds like the quintessential grandmother, always knowing what to say and with cookies on hand when the situation warranted. I’m so glad for you that you have her recipe boxes. Yes, the recipes are good to have but it’s the memories that come with them that are priceless. I know. I’ve some of Mom’s recipe notebooks. :)

gastrogardenerSeptember 4, 2012 - 7:37 am

Lovely memories… Not much for fudge but the shortbread sounds like something I’d try!

Sibella at bakingwithsibella.comSeptember 4, 2012 - 8:03 am

Wonderful, wonderful post – a joy to read! Lovely Grandma’s recipes and even lovelier results! <3

HetterbellSeptember 4, 2012 - 8:19 am

Scrummy! Fudge and shortbread would have to be two of my absolute favourite sweet treats. These look lovely.

SarahSeptember 4, 2012 - 8:26 am

I couldn’t ask for a better way to start my morning Smidge. Gran sounds like a wonderful gal with lots of ideas and recipes :) This is wonderful! Not to mention the fudge and shortbread cookie recipes. Two favorites around here. I am just crazy about the pictures too. Reading about the memories, and seeing the photos put me in such a great frame of mind to handle whatever comes my way this week. I love this. You are so blessed, yes, but so gifted too! Hugs!

Three Well BeingsSeptember 4, 2012 - 9:16 am

Well, you’ve made me cry this morning, Barb, but it’s okay. They are happy tears. I relate to absolutely every word of your post. I had two grandmothers, both very different, but both absolutely so special in their individual ways. Both lived long lives, and I was fortunate to have their companionship until ten years ago. Isn’t that abolutely amazing? And I think the reason I love being a grandmother so much myself is that their presence is always with me, and I remember. I’m going to make the recipes you’ve shared in this post, as tribute to your grandmother and mine. oxo

spreeSeptember 4, 2012 - 10:21 am

oh Smidge…what an enchanting post!! I can’t imagine getting a word of disagreement on this – if a granny template could be made, your Granny Harriet would be a finalist! There is such a richness here Barb, in your words and all the love and memory behind them – such character, heart, warmth, fun, light and goodness. I’m so touched by your memories that I think I might have to stop typing now…go back and read and savor again, and imagine what it was like being You, having & loving a granny like yours. I think Harriet is very much alive in Smidge…I’m sure of it…
(ps…these buttery little shortbreads are just beautiful. So simple and the very perfect bite of sweetness.) xxoo

Thank you for such a lovely post. Hearing about your Granny brings back many wonderful memories of my maternal grandmother. I kind of hope that my boys will think of my Mom that way when they get older. She is a very doting “Nonna.”. How wonderful for you to have access to so many of her recipes. Don’t you just love looking at their handwriting and any small notations on recipes that they may have made? Thank you for sharing a little bit of your Gran with us today. :-)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:33 am

kalamitykelliSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:45 am

Hey Smidge – you are the second person today making me think of my nana who was my best friend and teacher of all things important – until she passed away about 12 years ago. I’m lucky that my daughter had the forethought, when she was about 14, to get nana to tell her all her family recipes so we could have them. I love your recipes so much I’m going to pin them!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:46 am

Hi, Carolyn! Thanks for your words.. I’m off to visit you blog to catch up as well:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:47 am

It was a gift.. and your forgiveness is a greater gift, both for your grandma but mostly for yourself I think? We all do the best we can with what we’re given, I think our parents/grandparents lived in a harsher time. Thanks so much, viveka.. xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:47 am

The fudge was indeed dangerously good.. I think Grans rock too:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:48 am

So it was.. a fantastic fantasy of chocolate;)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:48 am

Well.. that’s a cool coincidence.. how is your gran??

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:49 am

I’ve thought I should begin to write a few down.. before I completely forget;)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:50 am

I always wonder about this.. what if WordPress stops running.. I’ve got to make sure I print off the recipes for a binder.. But the stories here, wouldn’t that be a loss? Not that that would ever happen? I guess we could find another server and transfer our work there to keep it going:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:51 am

I can absolutely picture you next to her with your tiny hands learning to chop.. and years later they are a scientists hands:) If you do make this fudge, I hope he likes it as much as we did! xx

Thanks so much, Sharyn.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:54 am

I suppose that’s why I often turn to something sweet when I have a mini crisis:D She was awesome.. as were my other grandparents as well… I just didn’t have the time to get to know them as well as Gran. Your Mom’s notebooks would be wonderful to look through.. all handwritten.. did she draw diagrams as well?? And little notes??

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 11:55 am

Barbara, life is too short and – also I can’t walk around whole my adult life blaming my childhood – have to take responsible for that myself and to be able to do that, I have to forgive. It was good for me.

Yes, they did .. and she was probably treated the same as a child, but neither my mum or my aunt was abused. Maybe it was her age.

that fudge looks sooooooooooooooo GOOOOOD!

ChgoJohnSeptember 4, 2012 - 2:01 pm

Regrettably, all I’ve got are some notebooks. Although there are a few complete recipes in her own handwriting, many are just a few scribbles, some without titles. Others are notes from watching a televised chef/cook prepare something. On the plus side, I have a cookbook she made for me just after I moved here, to Chicago. Though not handwritten, it is unmistakably her “work” and I cherish it. It’s what prompted me to start my blog. I wanted to make sure everyone has access to that book, in one way or another.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 3:33 pm

Absolutely.. I think the dough could be kept, refrigerated and tightly wrapped in plastic wrap for up to a week. Slice and bake away:D xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 3:34 pm

It did.. it was just as I remembered.. but with it being the recipe on the back of the Marshmallow Creme Jar I don’t think I could go wrong:D So technically.. this wasn’t her recipe but her instructions, lol!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 3:35 pm

It was wonderful.. I left most of it at work and saved some in the freezer for next week for my friend. Otherwise.. I would eat it all, lol!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 4, 2012 - 3:36 pm

Ahhh, that cookbook would be so precious.. and I think it’s time you made your own cookbook for the rest of us!

Eva TaylorSeptember 4, 2012 - 6:14 pm

I know exactly where you are coming from…sadly ;-)

Korena in the KitchenSeptember 4, 2012 - 6:41 pm

Both the fudge and the shortbread look wonderful, as is this post! I loved reading it and hearing about your memories of your Gran made me smile :) There’s nothing like family recipes, hey?

EhaSeptember 4, 2012 - 8:14 pm

Most weeeks there come moments when the ‘sensible’ part of me ticks off the one on blogs etc to admonish and tell how much in my ‘real’ life there is as yet to do that day! Supposedly wrong priorities? Then one reads a totally heartfelt and wonderfully warm story like yours and knows exactly why one may be ‘talking’ to people around the world and gaining so much from the experience :) ! Thank you so much for a part of your story. I was not to be in close touch with either of my grandmothers, but three incredible sisters [out of eight!] of my Mom’s were to compensate with love, kisses and always understanding! Oh, the photo styles are kind’of reminiscent :) !

What a beautiful post. I especially think its pertinent how my grans could, like yours, eat what they wanted. There is a lot to be said for our computer and kitchenaid lifestyles I think. I also like how she wrote ‘from the kitchen of’ the way that we reference each others blogs.

saffronandhoneySeptember 4, 2012 - 8:56 pm

She is good, thank you :) . I don’t get to see her that often (she lives in Russia), but we spent a few days together when I was there last week so, it was nice to talk and eat and spend time.

BTW that fudge looks amazing!

Your Gran sounds like an amazing person! Thoroughly enjoyed reading this post…and she has handed down some real gems in the form of the fudge and shortbread! Here’s to celebrating her memories. Yum yum.

Bam's KitchenSeptember 5, 2012 - 2:47 am

Grandma’s are like little treasure boxes always full of delicious surprises. What a lovely tribute. Her shortbreads and fudge look irresistible.

Martyna @ Wholesome CookSeptember 5, 2012 - 2:53 am

Oh Smidge, that is such a beautiful story! You have been very blessed to have your Granny around… I didn’t and reading your post has made me realise how much I have missed out on, even if it was just the thought of her looking down at me as I was trying one of her old, not quite right recipes. And your version of the fudge looks so delish! Blessings!

They’re the best.. although I’m not sure I’ll ever get through making all of them:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 5, 2012 - 8:41 am

Wow.. I could only wish for so many sisters! Although I had one best friend who felt like a sister, like me, she only had brothers. I’m glad you enjoyed my writing today.. it brought a few tears for me, but that’s part of the experience:) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 5, 2012 - 8:42 am

I think you’re right, I have another friend who said you keep in shape by using the hand on spoon method.. instead of the Kitchenaid mixer:) But I don’t think I’d be giving up my mixer any time soon! Yes.. those cards have always given credit to the author.. just like us!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 5, 2012 - 8:42 am

It’s important to have great memories! Yes.. it was delicious:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenSeptember 5, 2012 - 8:43 am

What wonderful memories of your gran Smidge. My heart just soared as I was reading this. I recently got a box of old letters that I had sent to my grandma when I was a child. She had saved them all. I have not gone through them yet, I’ve been afraid of the sadness, but I think your post has given me that nudge I needed. Thank you. :)

What wonderful memories and I loved hearing about your grandma! I too had an amazing relationship with my grandma, and now I can be thankful that our son has the same relationship with my mom.

Isn’t it wonderful that we can make their recipes and be reminded? I especially love that you have her recipes written in her handwriting. I cherish the ones I have and it always gives my heart a little knot when I look at them.

Lovely tribute! ~ April

How wonderful! I love the parts where you described her life so clearly for us. II had a gran named Gladys who made applesauce each fall, and she wasn’t afraid of cream. She’d pour it over bitter sweet chocolate pudding she had made in a pot over the stove. I’m so glad you have her recipe box. I have a few handwritten cards mine gave to me with her old German recipes, like red cabbage (that I have never made). You have inspired me to consider doing so.

A Canadian FoodieSeptember 6, 2012 - 5:01 pm

What a beautiful story. The shortbread looks exactly like my mothers – and now, mine. We use berry sugar, though. Did you get your grandmother’s cookie cutter? No one has that one any more. I cherish mine!

Oh Smidge, what a dream – “Our Mabel Lake cabin is accessible only by boat..” I had to scroll though your magical photos a couple of times to fully appreciate all the beauty!
I would love to share a coffee and muffin with you while watching the sun rise over the water.

It must be so relaxing and peaceful at your cabin on the water. It must be a great place to un-wind. I’ve had some holidays at places that are only accessible by boat and find they are the best of holidays because there is nothing to distract you from just resting – something that’s becoming a bit of a lost art. Love how you plan all your meals in advance and get up in the morning in your pyjamas and cook up beautiful things like this (I’ve never heard of hemp hearts though!) Beautiful images. And in summer do you swim in the water? Is it fresh water or salt water? xx

Bam's KitchenApril 22, 2012 - 4:41 pm

Stunning cabin and location Smidge. Did you go this weekend? Was it cold outside still? I am sure a hot mug of coffee and Mabel’s June oats cakes will warm you up. Take Care, BAM

ChgoJohnApril 22, 2012 - 4:47 pm

When going on holiday, few phrases ring so true as “accessible by boat only.” I immediately think of a life far removed from the normal hustle and bustle. And when I hear of “Mabel June’s Oatcakes” I think of an heirloom recipe lovingly prepared. In short, snack food for a place only accessible by boat. Such a wonderful post, Smidge!

Just A SmidgenApril 22, 2012 - 4:51 pm

Thank you:) I hope you’re enjoying your day? Hemp Hearts are shelled hemp seeds.. (hence the heart of the hemp seed).. it is loaded with omega, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber… Mostly sold at Health Food stores or Whole Food type groceries.. Here is our distributor (in Canada) but I think it could be found elsewhere too http://manitobaharvest.com/category/13/Hemp-Hearts.html
xo Smidge

Just A SmidgenApril 22, 2012 - 4:52 pm

Now that’s a thought? I could be the official Canadian Distributor of Pot Brownies with hemp hearts.. now that would be a business, lol! That’s not our house.. but the boats are in front of the marina and store. I should label my photos! xo

Geni - Sweet and CrumbyApril 23, 2012 - 7:48 pm

Oh, how I wish I could visit you at the lake house. How wonderful it sounds and looks. Your poetry is beautiful Smidge. It floats like the water you were paddling on.

Those muffins look fantastic! I would love to wake up to the smell of those baking and be offered a nice steaming cup of coffee. I am so ready for my Smidge bed and breakfast stay….more ready than you’ll ever know.

Just A SmidgenApril 23, 2012 - 9:59 pm

Perhaps.. But you could have just a taste??

Just A SmidgenApril 23, 2012 - 10:23 pm

I agree.. I think that’s what food does but then writing also takes it back the other way too:)

It’s sure remote.. No cell connection there, which is perfect but difficult to get used to at first!

Just A SmidgenApril 23, 2012 - 10:24 pm

Thank you so much, Stan.. I love connecting all of those things..

Just A SmidgenApril 23, 2012 - 10:27 pm

You know.. I used my other camera for probs 7 years.. The difference isn’t in the body of the camera (although some settings are more automated) I find the best advice I’ve gotten is to get a great lens.. It really takes photos to a different level. Then when I got a new camera for Christmas, my good (old) lens still fits the new model, (Canon) so there wasn’t a new expense every time. Cameras are so much fun.. But I already thought you had a good camera.. You do an outstanding job already!?

Just A SmidgenApril 23, 2012 - 10:27 pm

Yes! And I want to be there, I think I’m itching to photograph new landscapes…

Just A SmidgenApril 23, 2012 - 10:28 pm

Just A SmidgenApril 23, 2012 - 10:28 pm

It is a pretty magical place.. I have always felt so at peace there..

Just A SmidgenApril 23, 2012 - 10:30 pm

It’s all the you say and more, Charlie.. Because of all the memories that were made there too. We jump on the boat and swim in the middle of the lake (lake itch near shore) and it’s icy cold.. So you want it to be in the heat of summer before you do that! Xoxo Oh, and it’s a fresh water lake:)

Just A SmidgenApril 23, 2012 - 10:31 pm

I wish! My mom and dad are usually there around this time, but this year I might go give them a hand:)

I’m about as far from being blonde as one can get but that doesn’t mean I’m “moment-free.” I waste more time standing in front of the open refrigerator, wondering why I’m there. One day soon, I hope I’ll remember it was to get another of the ingredients to make these blondies. What a fun way to introduce a recipe!

Chica AndaluzaFebruary 26, 2012 - 2:31 pm

Lovely blondies (much nicer than chocolate to me) and gorgeous daffs! Now..did you ever have to call a client saying you´d be late for a meeting because you couldn´t find your glasses so you couldn´t drive? Then open the fridge to get a bottle of water and find your glasses in there?! No, I thought not ;)

kathryningridFebruary 26, 2012 - 3:55 pm

There’s a little shop on the Square in town where I’ll take you when you visit me–several colors of lovely transferware! ;)

kathryningridFebruary 26, 2012 - 4:04 pm

Ahhh, I’ve been a dull brownette for a very long time–bet my last blonde days were before I hit eight years old–but there isn’t a thing on your hilarious list of supposedly blonde accomplishments that I don’t manage to do with great regularity, so at least my Casper the Friendly Ghost paleness must think I should be blonde or something. What a fabulous post!! I didn’t know whether to stay here on the floor laughing my fool (brown-haired) head off or tear into the kitchen to make these Blondies. I’ve always loved Blondies (my sister’s and my college addiction, to a rather dangerous degree!), I am addicted to brown butter, and I know at IKEA I can get my favorite Scandinavian toffee (great flavor, nice texture somewhere between crunchy and crumbly with just a bit of chew under creamy Scandinavian chocolate): Daim. Well, soon, but I’m not done laughing over here just yet. :D

Smidge, these look absolutely delicious!!! I haven’t had a blondie in ages!! And I just saw the blonde roast at Starbucks. I may have to give it a shot the next time I’m in there. The daffodils – spring! Love it. I think I will pick some up this week. They look so cheerful, warm and welcoming. :)

I could only enjoy half of this lovely post as for some strange reason I cannot read the yellow text – what a pity. Beautifully photographed and great recipe though.

Greg is right, you always have the most wonderful photos. I can come here on an empty stomach and almost guarantee that I will leave here with an idea on what to eat or if I ate.. I just get hungry all over again lol

TandyFebruary 27, 2012 - 1:40 am

Smidge, your posts are wonderful, and brighten my day. I love your blondies :)

bitsandbreadcrumbsFebruary 27, 2012 - 9:07 am

I adore blondies, and with brown butter and skor toffee in them, too? Just perfection. You photos always make me smile, but these sunny daffodils and your blonde theme worked especially well to me today!

CourtneyFebruary 27, 2012 - 3:04 pm

Lol! As a natural blonde (at least as a child…), I have moments like you described all the time. But I’m bookmarking these so I don’t forget. :)

Wholesome CookFebruary 27, 2012 - 4:28 pm

I make lists to not forget, but sometimes I forget which writing pad I used and then I go on a wild seach. I can tell you that if I had one of these lovely blondies on hand, the search would be that much more pleasurable!

susielindauFebruary 27, 2012 - 5:38 pm

Wow! Now that is rich! YUM!

MalouFebruary 28, 2012 - 3:26 am

A magical post again, Barbara! I love the spring feel as well.

SarahFebruary 28, 2012 - 7:44 am

I just love this post. It’s all my blonde moments rolled into one handy list! Including the Blonde Roast and Martha’s Blondies!! You’re the best Smidge. You really are. :) Your words make me feel so much better about my day and your photos make me smile. I absolutely love coming here because I know everything’s gonna be brighter when I do :)

I agree with Malou – magical post!

TheWeeklySpoonfulFebruary 28, 2012 - 8:12 am

With lack of sleep, even platinum blondes have their moments….Thanks for getting us all to look on the bright side today. We might all have our blonde moments but I will not forget these blondes!

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:35 pm

I’d love that!!

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:35 pm

Thank you:)

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:35 pm

You too!!

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:36 pm

I’m certain we’re related.. but perhaps not because of those blonde moments:) I can’t picture you having any of those!

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:36 pm

Haha, gotta’ look on the bright side of things, I guess:)

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:37 pm

I didn’t know either and always wondered why they were called Blondies.. so now we know:) That bowl is part of a measuring set from Anthropology.. they have a lot of beautiful stuff… it’s dangerous to go in there!

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:38 pm

Oh, I wish these were from our garden… you are sooo lucky to have daffodils already!!

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:39 pm

You are so kind:)

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:40 pm

Good one!! I’m afraid there are quite a few more blunders I could have mentioned.. at the top of my list is forgetting names…

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:40 pm

Oh… I do that too!! Is there no end to the humiliation??

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:41 pm

Oh, dear.. guilty as charged.. let’s just say we’ve opened the refrigerator door to admire our food and to cool off just for a minute, shall we?

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:41 pm

Oh, dear, now that’s a good one!! I haven’t done that one yet, but I think I know someone who has;)

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:43 pm

Oh, I would wish we did have them blooming here! These are from our local grocers.. I keep trying to bring spring home early:)

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:45 pm

I was a white blondie baby.. but have a little help these days;) I know what you mean about the browned butter.. I could imagine it in all sorts of recipes. I’ll work on giving you another good laugh soon! xo Smidge

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:45 pm

That’s so awesome of you!! Thank you!

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:46 pm

Thanks, Kristy, it does make me feel happy to see spring flowers in the kitchen.. it’s so brown out right now!

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:47 pm

Oh, dear, I’ll have to keep that in mind.. is this the same for other colors I’ve used?? If so, I’ll have to stop so my writing can actually be read!! Thanks anyway, Mandy:)

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:48 pm

Haha, so true, but I’d probably get to the Blondies and stop looking… sadly…

Just A SmidgenFebruary 28, 2012 - 11:49 pm

Thanks, Sarah, it means a lot to be able to give readers like you a happy feel-good moment in the day!

LisaFebruary 29, 2012 - 3:19 am

I love blondies twice or more as much as I love brownies..and these are exactly how I love my blondies, with perfect add-ins like toffee bits and nuts, although I would probably add white chocolate chunks too..because I always have. I’m still waiting for you to adopt me..lol

The HookFebruary 29, 2012 - 5:58 am

Just remember: blonde is beautiful!

thecompletecookbookFebruary 29, 2012 - 6:25 am

Only the yellow. :-)

ChristyFebruary 29, 2012 - 6:39 am

Hehe, Blondies, eh? I am sure these taste awesome, or maybe even better than their cousin brownies:p Oh, don’t worry about it, I am sure that Starbucks did not come up with that flavor to mock your moments; it was clearly for marketing purposes;)
I just loved the way you wrote your post, it’s just so creative and refreshing, not to mention funny!:D

This reminded me of my mother. She lost all of her hair going through chemotherapy and my father bought a blonde wig for her. Whenever she would wear the wig and forget something, she’d say, “I’m having a blonde moment. Let me take this wig off so I can think better.” Mom had quite the wit. :D

I’m on a mission to lose weight, but those Blondies look so good that I might have to treat myself and make some.

I make iced coffee with Starbuck’s Blonde roast. I make the whole 12 oz. bag at once and then enjoy it for a couple weeks!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 23, 2012 - 2:43 pm

That’s a great idea.. I have to get more organized for recipes like that!
