Yesterday was but a cancelled cheque and tomorrow a promissory note: it is the today which counts . . . when we were small . . . when we learned what it all was about, this > brought us to today . . . .

While my hands are often pressed against crayoned papers these days, I know it won’t always be this way. Thanks for the reminder to embrace and enjoy each stage, as each one leaves an imprint on our hearts differently. Beautiful post Barb.

What beautiful words, Smidge. I love browsing through book shops – it seems such a great way to spend time. One day I found a children’s book, ‘When You Were Small’. It was beautifully illustrated with great words and I loved to read it to my son. Your beautiful words reminded me of that book xx

I’m a member of food bloggers of Canada too but haven’t participated yet. Looks like it has done well by you – not to mention your wonderful content!

Incredible photos, it looks like you’re getting hit hard with snow. All of our snow melted last week when we had our warm front move in, now it’s chilly again and we’ll be getting our’s on Friday. Wish us well.

Wonderful poem, Barb. Brought back a lot of memories. The pictures are great also. Are they recent – are you really getting that much snow? Luckily, ours has come more in the form or rain recently. We still have Feb/Mar to go though.
Best to ya.

If you want to email me I can go into more detail. If you have categories.. Click on the category you want (eg. Appetizers) and copy the url in your browser. Then select and upload the photo you wish to use as the button for your photo index Appetizer category. Once it’s uploaded, change the url (at bottom right) and paste in the url you’ve copied. That makes the photo redirect to your category page Appetizers when you click on it. As long as you have each of your posts categorized.. They all automatically appear for you:)

Your lovely poetry touched my heart. Sometimes I almost cannot bear the achingly sweet nostalgia of looking back through photo albums of my children when they were little. I treasure them now, but miss those little hands and sweet upturned faces. But, oh, how I am blessed to have new little hands to hold, sweet voices calling “Nana!” and outstretched arms reaching up for hugs that fill me with joy and take me back to when my children were little. I hope you have the blessing of grandchildren someday.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 4, 2013 - 11:36 pm

This one was difficult to write.. there is a story behind it and many tears as well. Some day I’ll share the rest of the story. I hear there are poetry books called Chap Books, where an author publishes a small, inexpensive book of poems. Thanks so much for your kind words.

Keep Calm and Eat OnFebruary 5, 2013 - 6:37 pm

Barbara, this poem, I have read over and over again. It has this capacity to reach deep down into your heart and tug it and squish it…I don’t even know if I can explain how beautifully it lays in my head and heart. You have a special talent, very special.

Roaring Lions Winter Ale Chili

One of my most curious discoveries of Cross-Country Skiing was the sound your skis make behind you.. you could be convinced someone is following you. This poem sprang from that feeling of someone “lurking” behind, the lengthening shadow as it comes around and stands in front of you while you finish your route.. and the…

Years ago, I went cross country skiing with my high school. Somehow I found myself straggling behind and before you know it I was alone. Yeah, I looked back a few times wondering who the heck was following me lol!

I’ve wanted to take my daughter to silverstar but with the current road conditions and me driving a Yaris, Not sure I want to try :D so yummy bowl of chili though!

saffronandhoneyJanuary 4, 2013 - 8:02 pm

Looks like a glorious snowy day. The sky is so blue!

Chili is just the ticket (I had some turkey chili for dinner just tonight) in this weather and this looks so delicious.

Mad DogJanuary 4, 2013 - 8:03 pm

Amazing trees!
How could beer not go with chilli! have you tried chilli vodka? I have mixed feelings about it – I like the heat, but it makes my head feel funny after 2 and it’s not the vodka doing that, I have hollow legs ;-)

imagesbytdashfieldJanuary 4, 2013 - 8:31 pm

Chocolate in chili???? Interesting but no go for me. And I was just thinking about making chili too :)

pjb1943January 4, 2013 - 9:22 pm

Used to cross country a lot but I can resist it now – too cold out there. I still have Florida blood in my veins. Beautiful pics, Barb. Where was this? You always post pictures of something that makes me hungry !!! Naughty girl !!!!!!!

I love Lion’s Winter Ale! I wish it was available year round, but then it wouldn’t be so special, I guess… Sounds like the prefect addition to chili :)

KristyJanuary 5, 2013 - 5:45 am

Your ski path is so beautiful…just breathtaking! I could spend hours out there, but I likely wouldn’t get far as I’d be snapping pics in every direction. Glad you had a great time Smidge. And your chili certainly looks warming. My two little ones would enjoy this as well albeit without too much heat. :)

TandyJanuary 5, 2013 - 6:19 am

I love the ingredient combination in this recipe :)

yummychunkletJanuary 5, 2013 - 6:49 am

I can’t believe we’re this far into winter, and I still haven’t made chili. I’m drooling over yours!

Kelly @ Inspired EdiblesJanuary 5, 2013 - 7:33 am

Tenderest spring lies under… indeed. Smidge, your photos are heart-stoppingly gorgeous! And your ale chili is the perfect punctuation on a snow-filled Canadian winter’s day. Love your food styling here! What a beautiful post.

Heather @ SugarDish(Me)January 5, 2013 - 8:10 am

Beer in chili is one of my favorite things ever ever EVER!! Not even kidding. Yours looks AWESOMe! So jealous of all your snow and winter sporting… we’ve not had snow here in 2 years and as a former resident of Upstate NY I am jonesing hard! Gorgeous photos & recipe. Thanks!!

glutenfreezenJanuary 5, 2013 - 8:45 am

Gorgeous photos! I’ve never cross country skied, but I would love to take it up. There are plenty of trails in New Hampshire. Now that we’ve moved, I don’t go anywhere without my iPhone navigation! Not even a short walk. LOL Your chili sounds wonderful and I’m going to try the chocolate in mine next time. :)

gastrogardenerJanuary 5, 2013 - 9:52 am

What an artist you are Smidge!) xxo

I think a day out in the snow like this would make you very hungry and coming home to a bowl of warming chilli would be awesome, especially with a few beers. I’ve never seen such a beautiful sight as your image of the trees covered in fresh powdery snow. I would love to experience a day like you’ve just had! xx

musingmarJanuary 5, 2013 - 2:09 pm

Those views! Glorious! The chili sounds wonderful although I might dial down the heat a bit. I wonder if I can find this beer in Ontario? It sounds worth looking for!

ChgoJohnJanuary 5, 2013 - 3:33 pm

With such beautiful surroundings, it’s quite simple to see why you return there to ski. Your daughter’s and her facial expression could easily become the poster child for long-suffering teens the world-over. To you and to her, all I can say is that this, too, shall pass. :)
Your chili sounds wonderful, Barb. I’ve 1 quart of of a very good chili left in my freezer and will need to make another to replenish my stock. There’s nothing like a good bowl of chili on a cold Winter’s day. Yours will be the recipe I prepare next time around. It really does sound good! Thanks for sharing — and bring a navigator with you the next time you go skiing. :)

The HookJanuary 5, 2013 - 4:12 pm

Your cool chili (get it?) has attracted my wife’s attention! Great job, Barbara!

writerwannabe763January 5, 2013 - 4:21 pm

Beautiful poem…and what a beautiful spot you chose to ski….I only went once to cross country ski…when we were much younger…but I loved it….It was on a winter getaway and we just never managed to do it again….The only mishap happened after we were through and making our way back to the Inn and there was a slight incline however I did not know it was pure ice and so went flying and gave my head a crack…what an awful headache …Diane

Norma ChangJanuary 5, 2013 - 5:39 pm

Such beautiful sceneries. Do you get mostly powdery snow? Chili sound interesting with the addition of chocolate.

Bam's KitchenJanuary 5, 2013 - 10:56 pm

Your beautiful view and experience skiing as a family is one that you will never forget. Your poem really captures your feelings and the experience. I was injured quite badly in a ski accident and can never be on a lift again but admire your family for finding the way back home after a long day out on the slopes. Your chili sounds amazing, great flavors and so rich I can’t wait to try it. Take care, BAM

movita beaucoupJanuary 6, 2013 - 6:33 am

Gorgeous – as always! This chili looks like something that 2.0 and I would thoroughly enjoy – there’s nothing like a big pot of hot chili to warm your bones from the inside out.

Happy New Year!

HetterbellJanuary 6, 2013 - 10:38 am

Your poem is absolutely outstanding! And even though I’m a vegetarian, you have a way of being able to write a meaty recipe that I throroughly enjoy reading. This one looks like a real winter warmer.

I am in love with this poem. It’s beautiful, Barb!
Just like the scenery from the skiing. Sorry you kinda sorta got…..um….disoriented :) I don’t think I’d mind getting lost on that trail at all. It’s breathtaking. Lucky girl!
Thank you for this delicious chilli recipe too. I think it’s just perfect for playoff games day!

wendy@chezchloeJanuary 6, 2013 - 12:37 pm

My Italian SmörgåsbordJanuary 6, 2013 - 2:47 pm

you are right: food never tastes better as after a day out in the snow. I remember how good the polenta and sausage was when eating it during our winter holidays on the mountains back in Italy. your scenery is even more beautiful and your chili hearty and nourishing. wish I could ski! :)

petit4chocolatierJanuary 6, 2013 - 2:57 pm

Beautiful post. The last time I went skiing was several years ago in Maggie Valley. Love everything about a ski trip. You are correct about the noise the skis make and you believe someone is behind you. Love the photos and your poem. The chili looks amazing!! I love the chocolate in the chili!!

spicegirlflaJanuary 6, 2013 - 5:30 pm

Now those photos make me want to have snow!! What beautiful shots! And, if you knew me, I don’t ski or want anything to do with the cold! This is the perfect meal to warm up to! As always, you have just the most beautiful blog!!

sallybrJanuary 6, 2013 - 5:48 pm

I loved the scenery, as much as a Brazilian can love images of the cold… from a safe distance, from the comfort of my computer screen, but my few experiences with skiing were…. let’s say “epic”? For lack of a better word. They involved one particular descent in which this tropical human being ended entangled in one of those plastic fences, one ski gone, the other miracurously still tied to my foot. I have ZERO grace with snow boots.

Now, seriously: beautiful poem, beautiful photos, beautiful recipe.. You rock and roll, and cross country ski ;-)

john@kitchenriffsJanuary 6, 2013 - 6:45 pm

It’s been years since I’ve been cross country skiing. So much fun (and tons safer than downhill!). And when you’re done you definitely want something hot and warming, like this terrific looking chili. How did you manage to pack so much flavor in this?! It looks wonderful – thanks.

The Healthy FlavorJanuary 7, 2013 - 1:02 am

The chili looks fabulous and what beautiful photos! I like to use cocoa, cinnamon and maple syrup in my chili sometimes…sooo good!

we really do live on opposite ends of the earth. Those beautiful cold pictures, just gorgeous Barbara. Tomorrow it is supposed to be 43C here….hot, damn hot. I’ll swap you a little cross country skiing in pristine snow capped woods.

vivekaJanuary 7, 2013 - 5:09 am

Wow, that I call winter … and winter comfort food. Stunning photos .. just like I expect for find Canada this time of year. Never done cross country skiing – only alpine. That first photo with the deep blue sky .. could you send some over to me – so sick of all the rain.

theglobalgarnishgeekJanuary 7, 2013 - 7:16 am

Right. Part of the beauty of x-country skiing is the muffled sound in the quiet of the woods. Beautiful photos.

Pride in Photos PhotographyJanuary 7, 2013 - 8:28 am

Your staging photography is just beautiful!!! Keep up the great work.

Eva TaylorJanuary 7, 2013 - 8:44 am

A wonderfully hearty dish for apés ski, Barbara. And a beer sounds great with this dish. How nice that you were able to spend such a lovely time with your children. The photos are incredible, would make a beautiful Christmas card next year.

kateshrewsdayJanuary 7, 2013 - 11:54 am

Spectacular pictures and fabulous winter warmers, Smidge. Thanks for a really exuberant post! Glad you had such a great time!

Aimee@clevermuffinJanuary 7, 2013 - 5:47 pm

Canada really is amazingly picturesque. Just so beautiful and white. I also agree, nothing makes you as hungry as the cold, being out doors and exercising, and a winter ale chili would be the perfect ending to that!

mjskitJanuary 7, 2013 - 8:38 pm

What an absolutely perfect chili for a day of cross-country skiing! The road you skied looks perfect and the scenery breathtaking! I’ll never forget skiing under a full moon at 2 am and seeing a huge elk clumping through the snow. Can’t see a sight like that any other way. Love the chili and the choice of ale!

jothetartqueenJanuary 7, 2013 - 10:20 pm

Wow! the views you had were magnificent! What a sight! – beautiful blue sky over the snow-capped trees.
the recipe sounds delicious and I would imagine it to be really hearty and good on a cold winter’s day, especially after all that skiing! Love the addition of bittersweet chocolate. I can imagine the depth it adds to the dish!

ClanmotherJanuary 7, 2013 - 11:44 pm

Winter…when the world rests, awaiting spring’s touch. You bring beauty to our community.

JoannaJanuary 8, 2013 - 2:56 am

Oh what a glorious day! Thank you for sharing it with us. It is many many years since I went cross country skiing and I remember it vividly, your beautiful photos have brought those memories back. xx

ColleenJanuary 8, 2013 - 10:03 am

Perfect for a cold winter day. Love the addition of cinnamon and chocolate!

Three Well BeingsJanuary 8, 2013 - 10:15 am

Great family shots and gorgeous snow! You have the perfect environment for family ski outings! And this recipe makes me warm just to read it. I love the addition of the ale, and although I’ve heard of beer in chili, I’ve never done it, but the bacon really surprised me! This is a must! We have a big Super Bowl family gathering in early February where everyone but me watches football…ha! I’ll volunteer to bring chili this year!

trixfred30January 8, 2013 - 12:46 pm

Now although I do like your creamy cake recipes it’s these meaty numbers that really attract my attention – and the photography that goes with it – you need to get a book published.

AssiaJanuary 8, 2013 - 8:08 pm

Lovely, creative, heartwarming chili and lovely winter pictures! I miss the snow here in Singapore.

Ashley LarkinJanuary 9, 2013 - 7:34 am

Smidge, you are such a poet! I loved this! And the chili with beer and chocolate (two of my favorite things :) ) sounds delish and so comforting. Great photos, too!

KarenJanuary 9, 2013 - 1:49 pm

Sounds like a wonderful and delicious way to warm up after a day of skiing.

peachkinsJanuary 9, 2013 - 11:49 pm

The Chili looks fantastic! I wish I could experience skiing someday!!

Jed Gray (sportsglutton)January 10, 2013 - 2:05 pm

Can’t decide whether the chili or the image of going up the road to the mountain is better Barbara. :-)
Happy New Year!

The cookies of your hands (and your daughter’s), of course, are beautiful, Smidge. (Everything that comes from your hands IS, always IS.) But even more beautiful than that, the beauty that flows (through your words) from the warmth of your heart. To lose a friend so young, so soon, will be a hurt slow to heal. I’m so sorry for your family in this, Barb. May Grace surround and blanket you, and above all, may it be a gentle and Peaceful Christmas!! xxx

Amen! Thank you for your grace-ful thoughts and Happy Holidays to you. I am going to start with your butter tarts…

those snowy cookies look AMAZING.

Eva TaylorDecember 19, 2012 - 10:52 am

I am so sorry for your loss.
What a lovely round up of Christmas baking, Barbara, and it’s so nice that your daughter helped you bake. I have very fond memories of my Mom helping me bake even after she became ill (I set up the dining room table as her work station). Such a lovely bonding time too. The butter tarts look unbelievable, you’ve captured them perfectly, I can almost taste the crisp crust and the delicious centre, and I don’t mind at all if it runs down my chin.

SarahDecember 19, 2012 - 11:10 am

Oh Barb, “Grace” is beautiful. I love these words. No one could write anything as beautiful as your words. I’m so sorry about the loss you’re enduring right now, so painful.

I’m so glad you and daughter got to spend time together baking. It sounds like the perfect thing to do right now. We wish you the happiest, merriest Christmas my dear. And, a wonderful 2013. Thank you for everything!

CathyDecember 19, 2012 - 11:20 am

Yum, Yum and more Yum! What beautiful photos and delicious recipes! I love the sound of those buttery tarts, and even though I’ve been in Germany for so long I’ve yet to make Pfeffernussen…. they do look good. Thanks for such a lovely post!

Grace, unmerited favor we so desperately need. Beautiful sentiment, Barb, so timely and true. Even one day in the kitchen baking is better than none and even better when shared with someone. :) I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a blessed and prosperous New Year!

This is a wonderful post and “Grace” a beautiful tribute to you departed friend. So sorry to read of your loss, Barb.
This is a fantastic collection of cookies! You and your daughter obviously work well together or, at the very least, you’re both are willing to set aside your differences for the good of the cookies. One must always put the welfare of the cookies above all else. :)

Bam's KitchenDecember 20, 2012 - 7:57 am

i’m so touched by your words on grace, Smidge. It’s one of my favorite words, and I try to absorb the meanings more and more into my life, and spread the same to others. I think this may be one of my favorite from among the many lovely selections you offer us. You have such a beautiful talent with your words.

As a quick aside, I’m a huge Anne Lamott fan, and enjoyed seeing you used one of her quotes. And what lovely recipes. Thank you! If I don’t have another chance to say it before Tuesday, I certainly wish you a wonderful grace-filled Christmas, my friend. Blessings to you and your family through the entire Christmas season, and much love and peace into the new year. oxo

KarenDecember 23, 2012 - 6:23 pm

The cookies are as lovely as your words. Have a wonderful Christmas with your family.

helene dsouzaDecember 26, 2012 - 6:46 am

They all sound new to me, except the Pfeffernüsse cookie, but I haven’t had it in a long time. The best part of making Christmas cookies are sometimes the spices. That’s the only time when you get the chance to use them in sweets and the European will love it. Thank you for the cookie introduction +Recipes.

Mad DogNovember 14, 2012 - 3:34 pm

Nice menu – I especially like the tartines!

bitsandbreadcrumbsNovember 14, 2012 - 4:15 pm

What a beautiful post…I was transported into the cold, brisk air and snow, could hear the birds and could touch the ice on the limbs of the hawthorne. Then taken inside where it’s welcoming and warm to have some of those wonderful tartines and split pea soup. Thanks for taking me along!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 14, 2012 - 4:59 pm

It was a great meal, nia:)

I will be right over to enjoy this feast made for a king. Am I too late? Thanks for introducing us to your friends and looking forward to giving them a visit. Take care, BAM

SarahNovember 14, 2012 - 6:22 pm

The Snowbird Hawthorne is wonnnnnnderful, Barb. I love it. What a beautiful poem.

You guys are making my week with these recipes. Thank you so much! I love both of these. Between you and John, I can officially stop complaining about not having something good to eat (and something I’ll actually eat) at lunch time. Hubby will be so happy :)

Profiteroles & PonytailsNovember 14, 2012 - 7:39 pm

Barb, where do you find the time? That is such an impressive line up of dishes. I especially like the Soupe aux Pois et Jambon. We just had this soup tonight for dinner — it is hardy, delicious and always very popular with the ponytails. I hadn’t thought of adding a little creme fraiche. Great idea! (And it sounds so much nicer en Franciase.)

EhaNovember 14, 2012 - 8:45 pm

Thank you from Down Under: such a delightful post to follow . . .

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 14, 2012 - 9:06 pm

My ponytail is 21.. and my son is 19.. that’s how I find more time:D Although they still require a fair bit of supervision these days, lol! xx

ChgoJohnNovember 14, 2012 - 9:54 pm

Such a beautiful post, Barb. Here, we are so busy dreading the onset of Winter that we forget that, like all Seasons, it has it beauty. Your poem is a gentle reminder of that. Now this is some feast you set before us, made all the more enticing by your photography. The tartines would be the perfect appetizers. The spilt pea soup is a favorite, with the creme fraiche a very nice touch. And love the idea of bringing puttanesca flavors to baked chicken. Can there be a better way to end this fabulous meal than with a slice of your heavenly pie? I think not. This is one sumptuous meal, Barb. You spoil us.

Carolyn ChanNovember 15, 2012 - 12:35 am

Other than because I live in Singapore and there is no winter, I couldn’t have put it better than John ! Another gorgeous post Barb !

A feast for the eys and ears! Am having a bit of a love affair with mushrooms at the moment so loved the crostini!

musingmarNovember 15, 2012 - 7:10 am

First, that lovely, lovely poem. Then the mushroom tartines that immediately made me think of including them in the holiday open house I’m planning. I own Laura Calder’s cookbook and love it, but sometimes I need to see one of the recipes on a beautiful blog like yours or Spree’s to really wake up to it. And after that, the split pea soup with the surprise of cloves. Cloves? Now I’m intrigued… And throughout your post, tantalizingly beautiful photos. Then finally, the jolt of delighted surprise when I saw my blog mentioned and your generous comments. Thank you! What an amazing post this has been!

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 8:18 am

I love mushrooms, I love split pea soup, I love pie…what’s not to love in this post?!!

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 8:20 am

By the way, two questions: could I use lentils instead of split peas? Just curious if they’re interchangable. Also, I can’t ever get creme fraiche here – is sour cream the best alternative?

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 15, 2012 - 8:36 am

I’m not sure if you can substitute lentils.. Yellow split peas for sure. The soaking overnight process helps the thin skins to pop when they cook the next day. Then the soup almost becomes a puree all on it’s own. I’m not 100% sure, but maybe check a few lentil soups to see the texture? You could always use an immersion blender, but I don’t think it would be as creamy? Green split-peas are a little different.. All with a caveat.. I think:)

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 8:38 am

Thanks, Barbara!

saffronandhoneyNovember 15, 2012 - 8:45 am

This all looks absolutely delicious. Right now, I’d love to have some of that soup! X

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 15, 2012 - 9:29 am

Oh, and maybe just a swirl of heavy cream? I think sour cream could work as well, it’s not even necessary, just a garnish:)

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 10:12 am

Thanks again. I have attempted to make creme Fraiche, but haven’t succeeded in my two attempts…

The HookNovember 15, 2012 - 12:26 pm

Une bonne soupe aux pois et jambon… Quel bonheur! Reminds me of my Grand-maman… what a nice memory. Your delightful spread is surpassed only by the lyricism in your poetry Smidge. And I have to say, I just love the design, layout and feel of your blog. There is so much originality and beauty here.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 15, 2012 - 7:28 pm

Wow.. I haven’t ever tried making that.. I should ask ChgoJohn.. he’s adept at making cheese.. maybe he could teach us how to make creme fraiche?

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 8:43 pm

Oh, do ask, that would be so great!

Three Well BeingsNovember 16, 2012 - 9:19 pm

What a beautiful poem, Barbara. I love the way you introduce a calming tone and then invite us in to sample your delicious recipes! You have a hospitable blog site that represents you so beautifully. Each recipe is incredible, but right now I would just love some of that soup! And I read as many blogs as possible, too, for the pure enjoyment of experiencing life from new vistas. But I haven’t yet admitted just how many to anyone…It’s hard to explain to anyone not already a committed blogger, isn’t it? oxo

Promenade ClaireNovember 17, 2012 - 1:53 am

Firstly what a beautiful poem, secondly what a fest, thirdly I adore that bowl, did I say ADORE clearly enough? And what a lovely way to respond to awards, gently you.
I know what you mean about reading blogs – so many tales an dsights to be told and sahred. As Debra says above, its hard to explain… x

Norma ChangNovember 17, 2012 - 6:23 am

Thanks for reminding me of the beauty of winter through your poem, I am feeling wamer already. Did you make all those dishes for one meal? I am coming over right now.

cityhippyfarmgirlNovember 17, 2012 - 4:34 pm

beautiful words and beautiful food Barbara. (and like Claire said, the little bowl is gorgeous!)

Keep Calm and Eat OnNovember 17, 2012 - 7:47 pm

Beautiful poem Barbara. You must have a beautiful heart to be able to write this way.
The line up of recipes are beautiful as well…and I have to say those little bowls are cute. Dishes are my weakness besides other things.

movita beaucoupNovember 18, 2012 - 5:37 am

jothetartqueenNovember 18, 2012 - 7:11 pm

I love your mushroom tartines! I love that kind of food. That puttanesca chicken looks really sumptuous too! Your poem is really beautiful. Now I have this beautiful winter scene in my head.

I enjoyed reading through your poem, lots of soul in it. But then I dont only know you as a great food blogger but also as a great writer and player with words. Please never stop any of these 2!

Years ago, I purchased an old, battered copy of Thomas Carlyle’s Sartor Resaurtus (I had to read it for a class), Tucked inside its pages was a piece of paper note. On one side were scribbled notes about Carlyle and his background. On the other side was a recipe for cake and frosting. I always though of the note writer–a woman from the late 1890s–mixing a cake and propping the heady book up to read as she did so. Somehow your poem reminded me of that strength.

spreeOctober 28, 2012 - 8:46 am

Everything about this post Smidge, gorgeous. The poem has a haunting beauty about it, and the way you’ve “mounted” it feels simply perfect. Your photos are so lovely and set such an autumn mood, rapidly waning light, chill outdoors, huddling in, and the smells of baked pumpkin and cinnamon! This is just about all a person would crave or need on a wet and blustering day like ours…just this, and a fire and someone to share it with. Thank you for sharing you with us! xx

Bam's KitchenOctober 28, 2012 - 8:57 am

A stunning poem with mounting excitement for the big entry of the double batch of pumpkin coffee cake. What perfect timing! I have to bake for the bake sale this upcoming week and your have already doubled the recipe for me… Sounds like the perfect treat for this task. Take care, BAM

What an incredibly lovely cake, and freezing the second one is pure genius, Smidge. Perfect spices too for this dreary rainy day— of course, it’s still better than a foot of snow ;-)

It sounds like your weather is not ideal, too, spree.. although, I think I see hoar frost gathering on the chickadee-filled branches of the tree outside my window this morning.. I have a lot to be thankful for:) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 28, 2012 - 9:36 am

Thanks.. it was a lovely cake, I can’t wait to defrost the other! I hope it works for your bake sale! ps.. the first poem was spectacular too, until a wordpress glitch deleted it when I hit “save”.. I love that poem, so evocative of the moment. And I love the way you framed it on the manuscript paper. It’s lovely to see an unusual recipe featuring pumpkin. Here, I usually only hear of pumpkin pie or soup, and since I’m going to have two pumpkin centres to use up in a household that’s never really eaten pumpkins before it’s nice to know there are all sorts of ideas. :) xx

Barbara, another stunning post .. love your poem and the layout of, so beautiful.
Then we come that stunning cake – wow …. !!! Next time I go to the states do I have to buy pumpkin puree.
Not to be find at any supermarket. Thanks for the indulgence

ChgoJohnOctober 28, 2012 - 1:18 pm

Such a beautiful post, Barb. The verse, photos and that cake. Oh, the cake! Everything fits together so perfectly but that cake! It’s the streusel. I see streusel and my heart skips a beat. Get this: for the first time ever, I actually have 5 cups of pumpkin purée that I made yesterday in the fridge. (YAY!) So, this cake, this wonderful streusel-topped cake, is very close to becoming my reality. Now, all I need do is finish the apple pie I baked so that I can clear the deck, so to speak, to make room for coffee cake. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet and I can feel the belt tightening around my waistline. (You’d think in this day and age they’d figure out a way to make leather that doesn’t shrink in Fall & Winter’s cold weather.)
I will let you know how mine turn out. In the meantime, I’m “pinning” this recipe so that I can keep track of it. Thanks for sharing. :)

great cake too, coming to your blog is always such a pleasure!

frugalfeedingOctober 28, 2012 - 3:16 pm

Looking rather amazing – seriously. Beautifully decorated!

The HookOctober 28, 2012 - 3:31 pm

So let me get this straight: you write beautiful poetry, you raise wonderful kids, you bake and you’re no slouch in the looks department, either? To top it off, you even find time to visit Wattpad and comment on your friend’s stories?
How do you do it all and stay sane?

TasteFoodOctober 28, 2012 - 5:21 pm

Aimee@clevermuffinOctober 28, 2012 - 6:13 pm

I love the idea of the cinnamon in the glaze, I can see how that would be amazing flavours with the walnuts. And you did such a pretty job of drizzling it too, looks so decadent.

susielindauOctober 28, 2012 - 6:48 pm

I made a pumpkin spice cake, but I will definitely try this! I must have had a premonition since I looked on your blog for it on Monday before I made it from an online recipe! Hahaha!

hotlyspicedOctober 28, 2012 - 8:44 pm

A fantastic poem, Smidge, and you’ve baked not one but two cakes! And this coffee pumpkin cake looks so delicious and just perfect for an afternoon tea. I’m about to start making my Christmas cakes. I always make more than one as they are a wonderful gift and so like you, I’ll have my kitchen benches full of ingredients with many cakes on the go at once xx

jothetartqueenOctober 28, 2012 - 9:15 pm

Looks like a wonderfully moist cake.. and I cant say how much I actually love streusel on coffee/tea cakes. Love the addition of a different texture which makes it lovely to eat. and that poem of yours is simply dreamy and beautiful! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 28, 2012 - 9:36 pm

Thank you.. it’s fun finding backgrounds. A blogging friend suggested I do so to enable her to click and print out a poem if she likes it. So now I get to be creative with the setup:) I know you’ll have fun with your pumpkin.. it can be used in so many recipes! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 28, 2012 - 9:37 pm

I have the same problem here.. I read about so many neat ingredients and I can’t believe no one carries them.. it’s time I opened a store, lol!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 28, 2012 - 9:44 pm

Oh, I knew you were making puree! It’s just the best because it’s so versatile! No need to clear your apple pie deck too soon.. slowly and savoring every bite would be my idea of a way to enjoy that pie!! I keep forgetting you haven’t had Thanksgiving yet, I’m so glad our Christmas and Thanksgiving are a little further apart… it gives me more time to exercise before Christmas, lol! I’ve given up on leather.. gone to cotton and stretchier fabrics:D Have an awesome week!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 28, 2012 - 9:46 pm

That’s what caught my eye when I saw this recipe.. it’s simply the effect of the nuts covered by lashings of glaze, but it looks pretty striking. It was fun to do!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 28, 2012 - 9:46 pm

Another lovely, lovely post and a beautiful cake. I love coffee cakes. I always used to make a cinnamon coffee cake for my Dad. He’s gone many years now, but when I make it my daughter still exclaims, “Petje’s cake!.” Recipes hold so much more than instructions for baking … memories, a sense of family, a feeling of being in the company of a loved one gone but somehow near.

I think that’s why there are so many food writers/bloggers out here.. it is so much more than about the food! xx

How does one mail food? I know companies do it.. but to make it survive the ordeal and look pretty? I’ve always wondered!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 29, 2012 - 8:32 pm

It’s such a pretty and easy cake to make.. I like that in a cake;)

I’ve never really thought about it, actually… I suppose with custom-made packing boxes and refrigerated cartons? (And exorbitant shipping costs! lol)

Thank you for this gift, Smidge. The beautiful cake, that gorgeous poem and the way you made something lovely from loss. How perfect all of this love is for a fall day.

You are so clever with words, sure wish I had a tiny, tiny bit of your words talent.
Great idea to double a recipe and freeze, doesn’t take much more time at the moment but sure saves a great deal of time and comes in so handy at a later date.

Simply gorgeous Barb. Your photos convey the same feeling as a warm cozy blanket — you just want to curl up with a piece of that cake and a cup of tea . . . and then call in sick. Lovely.

You know what??? I would happily have 2 slices of this cake… it looks amazing! I was so tempted to buy a slice of coffee cake when we were in the US last week, but I resisted. This one has got my name all over it. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

I have missed so many of your posts, I made myself a cup of ginger honey tea and I am ready to catch up
This blew me away! this has to be the most amazing cake I have seen with pumpkins in a long time!
I have guests coming over tomorrow and I have already made everything but I just might get up early just to make this!
