vivekaJanuary 31, 2013 - 9:19 am

Barbara, this .. is priceless – and even if I’m not a fan of icing … love the cream filling in the middle – so beautiful like everything else in your “sweetie shop” – what a cake … I would die if I got a cake like that on my birthday – I would save it and just look at it .. and the Tiffany box I love to have too. Was it your birthday – that I missed completely, I read it was your daughters best friends mum .. how stupid can I be.
Happy tomorrow .. and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and the day after and … and as we say in Sweden, GRATTIS!

So I didn’t miss anything … great. I hope you had a fantastic day … and you got some nice small boxes too.
Just made your orange cake .. I think I got the measures all mixed up. It came out okay, but very sweet. I halved the recipe. This with cup and ml .. cup and grams .. get different measures depending on witch converter online I use.

This. Is. A. Piece. Of. Art. Do you hear me? This is not baking, this is taking it to a whole new level where it should be in an art gallery if it wasn’t making me drool so much. The cut cake is just so amazing with the bright red cake and filling. And happy birthday smidge! I hope you get spoilt.

Whoever said “Life’s too short to stuff a mushroom” had never visited your kitchen! Fantastic cakes. Have a very birthday and maybe a rest from cake making:)

ChgoJohnFebruary 1, 2013 - 6:04 am

My being behind in y blogging duties has come with a price, I missed your birthday. So sorry, barb, and I hope you accept my belated birthday wishes. I hope it was a wonderful day filled with the people and things you hold most dear.
Now, about this cake. WOW! “Surprise!” is right. The frosting alone made that cake exceptional. That heart inside was something else! I’m almost sorry to learn how you did it. I’d prefer to continue to believe that you’ve a magic wand that wave around the kitchen when you “bake” cakes. Or did you use your wand to make those cake pans just to throw us off the trail? Hmmm …

Norma ChangFebruary 1, 2013 - 6:10 am

Happy belated birthday, Barbara, cannot wait to see the “cakelet” your daughter make for you, I am sure it is as gorgeous as yours. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
What a stunningly beautiful cake you made for your friend. The surprise photo said it all.

I’m not a big red velvet fan (I just don’t get it) but I would certainly drive into this gorgeous cake, without prejudice! I love those blue boxes too, I received one for Christmas and what a lovely surprise it was!

My daughters birthday is Feb 18th and mine is the 26th. Im going to Mexico a few days after my birthday and I think the 10 pounds I will most likely gain after eating this cake will be well worth it….doubt I will run into anyone I know sunbathing in Mexico anyways. ;)

ChgoJohnJanuary 27, 2013 - 3:54 pm

Those sliced strawberries are such a clever idea and look how they beautify your cakes, Barb. They’re really something. And, for my tastes, love that your recipe includes an orange glaze. I really do enjoy citrus-y cakes and an orange glaze is the best. I doubt that these cakes lasted long on your countertop. They certainly wouldn’t on mine.

The Retiring SortJanuary 27, 2013 - 4:39 pm

This sounds yummy, and I love the strawberry hearts! ;-)

musingmarJanuary 27, 2013 - 4:51 pm

I hadn’t seen your video before, Barb, and it was lovely. The music was the perfect accompaniment to the visual recipe and all the flowers. The cake sounds delicious, and the heart-shaped strawberry slices add that special loving touch!

musingmarJanuary 27, 2013 - 6:25 pm

It’s crazy here – highs have been way below zero for about a week, and then on Tuesday they’re calling for a high of 12! It’s supposed to be raining here before dawn (following snow and freezing rain). Certainly not winter as we know it! I think a slice of your cake, a warm blanket and a good book on the couch will be just the ticket!

spicegirlflaJanuary 27, 2013 - 6:54 pm

Eva TaylorJanuary 28, 2013 - 7:02 am

I love the look of the baked strawberries, so pretty on the cake. And I bet the baking would also concentrate the sugars so they don’t taste like water like they usually do this time of year.

vivekaJanuary 28, 2013 - 11:59 am

Frist of all … I would love to say that I love your little logo – forgotten during my last visit. What an hearty cake- can see how moist it’s – but why icing???? Use to do a lemon cake with the same principle with the syrup. It was my favorite for years, don’t have clue what made me stop baking it – probably happen when I moved abroad. I will make this one – during this weekend, but no icing on my cake.

Coleen PatrickJanuary 28, 2013 - 1:38 pm

Your are one talented lady!!!!! Well done video, thoroughly enjoyed watching it and listening to the music. Lovely cake.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 28, 2013 - 8:42 pm

It certainly doesn’t need the icing.. This is a Barefoot Contessa addition, I agree with you, the less icing the better.. But I did love the whipped cream and jammy sauce;D

kateshrewsdayJanuary 29, 2013 - 12:26 am

Gorgeous idea/ I love the strawberries!

vivekaJanuary 29, 2013 - 2:51 am

I will do the jammy sauce .. because I will have strawberries leftover anyhow. The thing is the strawberries don’t taste much over here just now and cost … mucho.

Looking forward to make the cake.

wendy@chezchloeJanuary 30, 2013 - 6:44 pm

The strawberry hearts are new to me and will be repeated in my kitchen. And I love this simple pound cake with oranges. I’d go for the orange syrup and orange glaze plus the whipped cream of course.

Those strawberry hearts are such a clever idea! I love pound cake and I loooooove strawberries, so I’m sure that I will fall head over heels for this one. The addition of jam and whip-cream elevates it to a whole other level! :)

RobinFebruary 5, 2013 - 2:25 pm

That looks so yummy I’m practically drooling. Love the strawberry hearts. ♥

You have the patience of a saint. If you can give the blow by blow description of canning – then we need to read it! Very thorough, friendly and doable.
I love raspberry jam. Sometimes for me, I’ll deseed just a portion of it but still like to know I’m eating raspberries.
Love your photos.

I love a good jam like those, butter + jam in a fresh bread, Mmmmmm!

hotlyspicedAugust 12, 2012 - 4:08 am

I love your jam jars Smidge. They are like a step-back in time to when all ‘house-wives’ made preserves. I would love to try your raspberry, cinnamon and peach jam – what a wonderful combination. And the colour of your jam is fabulous – so vibrant and rich. Long after summer has past, I know you’ll be remembering it with these preserves xx

Every summer I tell myself I’m going to learn how to can and I never do it! Maybe next year… Ha!

Looks delicious!

My Mom used to make the best jams! I miss her immensely. It’s just JT and I so making my own makes it seem like I would never get through them. I adore home made pickles so I can hardly wait to see that recipe.

ChgoJohnAugust 12, 2012 - 7:08 am

What a useful post, Barb, one that I wish I had seen last year when I began canning. It’s a great “how to” with every step described and each concern addressed. Where was ya when I needed ya? :)
I’ve pinned this in my canning board so that anyone that comes along will see it and learn. On behalf of future canners everywhere, thank you! (There was a secret meeting and I was elected spokesperson.)

supersuAugust 12, 2012 - 7:39 am

wow. very nice post – you make is sound so simple & straight-forward….thanks for this!
and your images of the raspberry jam are lucious!!!!

Judy @Savoring TodayAugust 12, 2012 - 8:17 am

Glistening red jars of jam–it is like preserving summer. Grew up canning much of what was produced from our garden for winter, it seems almost tedious at the time, but when the ground was cold with winter rest it was so welcome. :)

KristyAugust 12, 2012 - 8:27 am

This looks so delicious Smidge. I’m a huge fan of raspberry preserves and jams – especially the fresh variety. I’ve never gotten around to canning, it totally intimidates me. I think it’s one of those undertakings I’ll save for later down the line. In the meantime, I’ll have to find some to buy now that you’ve put the mental image and flavors in my mind. :) Yum!

vivekaAugust 12, 2012 - 8:53 am

Reading this post is like … poetry and science plus beautiful in one. Didn’t know that there altitude had impact on jam. Wonderful – Wonderful … WonderFUL …

CharlesAugust 12, 2012 - 11:07 am

Ah, I love raspberries. I made strawberry jam recently which was great, but raspberry was my big love. Only problem is they’re so darn expensive, but the colour and flavour they give to jam is unbeatable. Lovely jam Smidge!

bitsandbreadcrumbsAugust 12, 2012 - 12:03 pm

What gorgeous jam you have made here. We can’t get raspberries at a decent price for jam purposes, but they do make the best! I love the idea of the raspberry/peach combo, too because I adore peach melba. Isn’t canning easy once you do it? It seems so daunting, but really you just have to have the time. Of course, I didn’t get anything canned so far this year. :(

Rock SaltAugust 12, 2012 - 12:35 pm

Fab, thanks Smidge! I intend to start canning in earnest, I’m working my way up to a big batch like this. Brilliant instructions, thank you again x

Preserving Summer – what a great title. I love those jars – it must be satisfying to see them jam-filled and lined up in a store cupboard.

Smidge, thank you do much for taking the time to write this post. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. I bought all the necessary “tools” for canning earlier this year, and have since made every excuse in the book to not do it. Yep, it scared me. But your post is so thoughtfully written, that I think I really can do this. Thank you!!

And I just love the poem too!

Raspberry jam is my favorite. I have never made it…

musingmarAugust 12, 2012 - 5:17 pm

Beautiful! That jam looks almost too pretty to eat. I’ve never canned, and I couldn’t really tell you why. My mother made jams, pickles and chili sauce when I was a kid so it’s not like I don’t have a role model. One of these days … Thank you for your detailed instructions and the tip about the Bernardin website. Good reference points for when I get my canning act together!

Aimee@clevermuffinAugust 13, 2012 - 11:39 pm

I really want to get into preserving, the issue I always find is you preserve in summer and it’s too hot to stand over a stove. But these photos make it look worth it!

CorkAndSpoonAugust 14, 2012 - 7:07 am

I grew up canning with my mom. Every year we would have a garden packed full of tomatoes, cucumbers, yellow wax beans, and blackberries and by the time the end of August rolled around the basement pantry would be stacked to the top with fresh spaghetti sauces, jams, dill pickles, yellow wax bean cinnamon “pickles” (these were my favorite!) and dozens of other concoctions. Spaghetti sauce was always the worst, and jams were always the easiest. Enjoy canning, and if you ever need a totally random recipe for a veggie, let me know, I’m sure my mom has several :)

What a lovely summer salad, Smidge. I hope your weather has come around and is a bit warmer, if not, let me know and I’ll send some of our hot and humid weather round to you! The bike is adorable. I had fenders put on my bike so I don’t get the splash up on my back. When you get a basket, make sure it’s not too heavy; I got a very sturdy one, but it puts about 10lbs onto my bike which makes it tough to carry up stairs.
It’s funny, I had Farrah hair too…very funny.

This looks bright and pretty, with plenty of protein from the feta, pecans and optional prawns. I know you will enjoy your new bike. My particular vehicle fantasy is an adult tricycle, but, if I have to choose, I’d rather go back to France next year.

GrannyJuly 6, 2012 - 7:27 pm

There used to be a TV show called “Dinner and a movie” where the hosts would share a recipe and, if I am not mistaken, suggest the most enjoyable movies to watch while eating the meal, or actually show a movie with a few interludes for cooking. I am not sure which anymore, but now I am thinking “Salad and a Bicycle,” a new show by Smidge. Doesn;t it sound good?
