Emerald Green Edamame Dip

This brilliantly colored dip is just a bright burst of Spring in your mouth! My daughter wanted to bring something healthy to her friend’s birthday party so we knew we wanted to start with Edamame and some sort of dip. Emerald is the Panatone color for this year, so Smidge’s kitchen worked out a recipe…

One of my favorite dips, although I cannot remember now if the one I make has avocado in it… great addition if it doesn’t ;-)

Indeed, a perfect springtime appetizer!

Smidge! I’ve mentioned several times the past two days how i adore the many greens of spring…and now, with this, yet another green to swallow and savor! This looks gorgeous, and sounds scrumptious, and I’m pinning it and making it this weekend! (Several I know will want this too!) Love! (And, I suppose it doesn’t hurt that your photo is stunning!) I’ve missed you these past few weeks and will try to catch up! This was a beautiful place to start, my friend! xxx

I never knew you could make edamame into a dip. If it’s anywhere near as good as the beans themselves it must be delicious!

Erin @ErinsDCKitchenApril 11, 2013 - 6:39 pm

This looks yum, I need to try it. I love edamame but never have good ideas of how to use it other than in curry or rice.

Edamame makes a great dip.. we both agree on that! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenApril 11, 2013 - 8:57 pm

If you want the truth, Mad Dog, my daughter tasted it.. then just squirted a whole bunch in, so I underestimated for the recipe:D Wouldn’t want to make it screamin’ hot for some people, lol, but we love things really spicy!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenApril 11, 2013 - 9:01 pm

You must be getting all sorts of lovely greens for spring in your parts, spree.. so close to the ocean and all! And that much further south of us. We’re desperate for a little more green here, but all we get is brown, yucky brown and snow. So the only green is in our kitchen, lol! Thanks for stopping in, I’ve missed you.. but I know you’re up to something fantastical! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenApril 11, 2013 - 9:03 pm

It turned out so vibrant.. I guess it was the edamame being boiled? Even avocado doesn’t go that bright.. it was yummy for sure:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenApril 11, 2013 - 9:06 pm

We thought of it for that exact reason, it needed a little creaminess in it, without avocado it’s a bit drier for sure. I was thinking plain greek yogurt, but we didn’t have any at the time. Thanks for stopping by Angie! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenApril 11, 2013 - 9:06 pm

I suppose that was a compliment *laughing.

Congratulations to you and your awards! You deserve every last one of them. The way you feel about Sue’s blog is the way I feel about yours! So gorgeous and delicious! YUM to that dessert!!

Eva TaylorNovember 14, 2012 - 9:46 am

What a lovely poem, Barbara. And the line up of fall gourmet goodies is just beautiful. You know how I love split pea soup too, the crème fraiche is a beautiful addition, I’ll have to remember that.

Your post is making my hungry – that pie is amazing! Have a Great One:)

It’s a competition, to win a book voucher. I won’t win but don’t want to let the person down who nominated me, and it’s fun to do.

I’ve been back and forth now (half the morning it seems!) between here and some of your friends places and been filled to brimming. (Thank you for the introductions! I’m a soon-to-be-fan for the reasons you’ve stated!) I love the way you feed us here Smidge. Such goodness! Your poem (and the way you’ve presented it!) so Beautiful; your crostini (sumptuous earthiness we crave this time of year!), and that pie of yours (man!) – I go back to where I started…How very well you feed us here! xx

KristyNovember 14, 2012 - 11:13 am

I need to read this again when it snows here. It will remind me of all the good things about winter – which sometimes is hard to do. :) Beautiful poem. And this meal looks delicious. I could fill up on starters alone! Congrats on all the awards. It’s a joy stopping in your kitchen/home/world every time Smidge.

ClanmotherNovember 14, 2012 - 11:28 am

I love stopping by for a visit! You always have interesting company – the comments are an extraordiny testament to a community that shares knowledge and encourages creativity. In a world that is fast losing the ability to have face to face connections, you have created a space to celebrate accomplishments and nurture friendships. By the way, did you change your blog look? Looks fantastic!

Just Add AttitudeNovember 14, 2012 - 12:10 pm

I love mushrooms on any sort of toasted bread – this recipe sounds yummy I especially like the sound of cream cheese. Beautiful poem and equally beautiful picture behind the words. ;)

Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime CordialNovember 14, 2012 - 12:46 pm

Beautiful post, Barb, I was oohing and aahing as each dish scrolled onto the page. Just the crostini and soup would have been enough for me, and then there was the beautiful chicken and dessert! Stay warm in this cold weather! xx

hotlyspicedNovember 14, 2012 - 12:47 pm

Another beautiful poem Smidge with wonderful words and I love the background behind it. I love the crostini with the cremini mushrooms. I think I could eat more than a few of those. Thanks for promoting some new blogs for me. I’ll be sure to hop on over and take a look xx

HetterbellNovember 14, 2012 - 1:55 pm

A beautiful poem, so evocative of the turn of the seasons. Such lovely looking comfort food for the cold wintertime, too. xx

Peri's Spice LadleNovember 14, 2012 - 2:53 pm

Oooh…lovely mouthwatering food…love the mushroom tartines, yummy…the poem is beautiful and touching, Barbara:) Thank you for your wonderful words for Peri’s Spice Ladle. xx Peri.

Nice menu – I especially like the tartines!

bitsandbreadcrumbsNovember 14, 2012 - 4:15 pm

What a beautiful post…I was transported into the cold, brisk air and snow, could hear the birds and could touch the ice on the limbs of the hawthorne. Then taken inside where it’s welcoming and warm to have some of those wonderful tartines and split pea soup. Thanks for taking me along!

The Snowbird Hawthorne is wonnnnnnderful, Barb. I love it. What a beautiful poem.

You guys are making my week with these recipes. Thank you so much! I love both of these. Between you and John, I can officially stop complaining about not having something good to eat (and something I’ll actually eat) at lunch time. Hubby will be so happy :)

Profiteroles & PonytailsNovember 14, 2012 - 7:39 pm

Barb, where do you find the time? That is such an impressive line up of dishes. I especially like the Soupe aux Pois et Jambon. We just had this soup tonight for dinner — it is hardy, delicious and always very popular with the ponytails. I hadn’t thought of adding a little creme fraiche. Great idea! (And it sounds so much nicer en Franciase.)

EhaNovember 14, 2012 - 8:45 pm

Thank you from Down Under: such a delightful post to follow . . .

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 14, 2012 - 9:06 pm

ChgoJohnNovember 14, 2012 - 9:54 pm

Such a beautiful post, Barb. Here, we are so busy dreading the onset of Winter that we forget that, like all Seasons, it has it beauty. Your poem is a gentle reminder of that. Now this is some feast you set before us, made all the more enticing by your photography. The tartines would be the perfect appetizers. The spilt pea soup is a favorite, with the creme fraiche a very nice touch. And love the idea of bringing puttanesca flavors to baked chicken. Can there be a better way to end this fabulous meal than with a slice of your heavenly pie? I think not. This is one sumptuous meal, Barb. You spoil us.

Carolyn ChanNovember 15, 2012 - 12:35 am

Other than because I live in Singapore and there is no winter, I couldn’t have put it better than John ! Another gorgeous post Barb !

A feast for the eys and ears! Am having a bit of a love affair with mushrooms at the moment so loved the crostini!

musingmarNovember 15, 2012 - 7:10 am

First, that lovely, lovely poem. Then the mushroom tartines that immediately made me think of including them in the holiday open house I’m planning. I own Laura Calder’s cookbook and love it, but sometimes I need to see one of the recipes on a beautiful blog like yours or Spree’s to really wake up to it. And after that, the split pea soup with the surprise of cloves. Cloves? Now I’m intrigued… And throughout your post, tantalizingly beautiful photos. Then finally, the jolt of delighted surprise when I saw my blog mentioned and your generous comments. Thank you! What an amazing post this has been!

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 8:18 am

I love mushrooms, I love split pea soup, I love pie…what’s not to love in this post?!!

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 8:20 am

By the way, two questions: could I use lentils instead of split peas? Just curious if they’re interchangable. Also, I can’t ever get creme fraiche here – is sour cream the best alternative?

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 15, 2012 - 8:36 am

I’m not sure if you can substitute lentils.. Yellow split peas for sure. The soaking overnight process helps the thin skins to pop when they cook the next day. Then the soup almost becomes a puree all on it’s own. I’m not 100% sure, but maybe check a few lentil soups to see the texture? You could always use an immersion blender, but I don’t think it would be as creamy? Green split-peas are a little different.. All with a caveat.. I think:)

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 8:38 am

Thanks, Barbara!

saffronandhoneyNovember 15, 2012 - 8:45 am

This all looks absolutely delicious. Right now, I’d love to have some of that soup! X

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 15, 2012 - 9:29 am

Oh, and maybe just a swirl of heavy cream? I think sour cream could work as well, it’s not even necessary, just a garnish:)

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 10:12 am

Thanks again. I have attempted to make creme Fraiche, but haven’t succeeded in my two attempts…

Une bonne soupe aux pois et jambon… Quel bonheur! Reminds me of my Grand-maman… what a nice memory. Your delightful spread is surpassed only by the lyricism in your poetry Smidge. And I have to say, I just love the design, layout and feel of your blog. There is so much originality and beauty here.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 15, 2012 - 7:28 pm

Wow.. I haven’t ever tried making that.. I should ask ChgoJohn.. he’s adept at making cheese.. maybe he could teach us how to make creme fraiche?

Gretchen O'DonnellNovember 15, 2012 - 8:43 pm

Oh, do ask, that would be so great!

Three Well BeingsNovember 16, 2012 - 9:19 pm

What a beautiful poem, Barbara. I love the way you introduce a calming tone and then invite us in to sample your delicious recipes! You have a hospitable blog site that represents you so beautifully. Each recipe is incredible, but right now I would just love some of that soup! And I read as many blogs as possible, too, for the pure enjoyment of experiencing life from new vistas. But I haven’t yet admitted just how many to anyone…It’s hard to explain to anyone not already a committed blogger, isn’t it? oxo

Promenade ClaireNovember 17, 2012 - 1:53 am

Firstly what a beautiful poem, secondly what a fest, thirdly I adore that bowl, did I say ADORE clearly enough? And what a lovely way to respond to awards, gently you.
I know what you mean about reading blogs – so many tales an dsights to be told and sahred. As Debra says above, its hard to explain… x

Norma ChangNovember 17, 2012 - 6:23 am

Thanks for reminding me of the beauty of winter through your poem, I am feeling wamer already. Did you make all those dishes for one meal? I am coming over right now.

cityhippyfarmgirlNovember 17, 2012 - 4:34 pm

beautiful words and beautiful food Barbara. (and like Claire said, the little bowl is gorgeous!)

Keep Calm and Eat OnNovember 17, 2012 - 7:47 pm

Beautiful poem Barbara. You must have a beautiful heart to be able to write this way.
The line up of recipes are beautiful as well…and I have to say those little bowls are cute. Dishes are my weakness besides other things.

movita beaucoupNovember 18, 2012 - 5:37 am

I love your mushroom tartines! I love that kind of food. That puttanesca chicken looks really sumptuous too! Your poem is really beautiful. Now I have this beautiful winter scene in my head.

First of all congrats to the awards!

I enjoyed reading through your poem, lots of soul in it. But then I dont only know you as a great food blogger but also as a great writer and player with words. Please never stop any of these 2!

The Tartines make me feel hungry and the pea and ham soup reminds me of my grandmother.

Dipping into Something New { A Swimmer’s Lament }

“The physiotherapist instructed absolutely no cycling, even the elliptical machines are too much wear on my knee joints,” I lamented to my chiropractor, “It’s into the pool I guess.” Much laughter ensued as Robin ensured me that I was soon going to gain tons of weight due to my lack of exercise and the Life…

I love this! I work in sport education, and most of our students are athletes. We intentionally take them swimming because it requires such a different kind of skill (and level of fitness!) than pretty much any other sport, and most of them flounder like you wouldn’t believe at first… I used to really hate swimming myself but once I got the rhythm and movement properly dialed in, I really enjoy it :) And I think bacon in this dip would be totally worth the extra lap!

Katie GlennNovember 6, 2012 - 6:05 pm

Exercise always makes me hungry too!!!

sallybrNovember 6, 2012 - 6:09 pm

PRICELESS!!!!! Well, maybe you know I used to be a long distance runner, and flirted with the idea of doing a triathlon one day. Except, except, except, I cannot swim to save my life! I am a horrible swimmer and will never understand the “relaxing” aspect of the activity. I am in full fledged panic when I go into a swimming pool, and have been on the receiver side of many dirty looks from real swimmers.

Ok, now I must go back and read the recipe…. he, he, he…..

spicegirlflaNovember 6, 2012 - 6:21 pm

Something about swimming always makes me hungrier than any other activity!! I was so with you all the way in describing your stepping into swimming! I would also get all the gear, hey why not go all into it, right? And then check all around and feel like all eyes are on you!! good for you Barb! Can’t wait to hear more!!

annashortcakesNovember 6, 2012 - 6:42 pm

I too am ID’d as the person most likely to drown. Good luck with your new exercise routine. My hubby is swimming three times weekly and has developed some nice new arm muscles.

Aimee@clevermuffinNovember 6, 2012 - 7:11 pm

Oh smidge, I am right there with you! When I did my back awhile ago I had to go use a kick board in a pool to try and recover. No other exercise allowed. But let me put that in context – in Australia – in summer. NO ONE needs a kick board. We can all swim, we’re made to learn. I can swim too, but was so broken at this point that even the life guard came up to me and asked if I wanted some goggles because I must of looked so uncoordinated. Humbling times :)

Eva TaylorNovember 6, 2012 - 7:38 pm

Good for you Barbara, you go girl! When I travelled for work I would always squish my swim suite into my suitcase because it was an easy workout and I didn’t have to waste space for runners!
That dip sounds great, I’ve got to get out and try it.

Carolyn ChanNovember 6, 2012 - 7:45 pm

Sorry to hear about your knees, Barb. Good on you for braving the pool ! That bit about the pressure of the goggles had me laughing out loud – I think everyone’s experienced that at some point or another.
As for the haloumi dip – I have never tried haloumi like that before (always pan fried slices of it and love the salty, chewy, almost squeaky texture of it) and it looks delish !

yummychunkletNovember 6, 2012 - 7:56 pm

Hope your knees feel better! The dip looks delicious.

BrittanyNovember 6, 2012 - 8:28 pm

I am sure you looked HOT in that bathing suit!! I NEED to get one myself because I want to start swimming more!! I remember swimming a lot as a kid and being FAMISHED after, thankfully my dad always packed snacks for when we were done!

And gosh it DOES make everyone hungrier!
What a delicious dish!

Way to go, Barb! That walk. That long, lonely walk from the locker room to the pool has kept many a potential Olympic athlete from entering the pool and realizing their potential. Not you, however. You did it and you’ve got a little less than 4 years before the World’s athletes converge on Rio. You’ll be there, too, if only you remember you own words, “Be at one with the water.” :)

My Italian SmörgåsbordMNovember 6, 2012 - 10:09 pm

I used to swim every morning before my little one was born. it is really the best thing one could ever do for one’s body (and mind). you’re soon gonna be a skilled swimmer and, if not, your body will be thankful anyway. lovely dipp!

rsmacaalayNovember 6, 2012 - 11:50 pm

Haloumi dip sound interesting, that must be so good

Food,Photography & FranceNovember 7, 2012 - 12:39 am

Like many of your readers, I used to swim every morning before work. Now I don’t, even though I now have a pool, and I’m so much happier:)

zazaseacowNovember 7, 2012 - 12:40 am

congratulations dear barbara! trust your inner-self and you’re going to love swimming. i used to be a swimmer & a female water-polo player till the early 90′s. now residing in my hellenic island i still practice sea swimming for at least 1 hr almost every day of the year (with the exception of the winter months here, aka dec-mar) and i love it! i am quasi sea-born and i enjoy among other sea beauties that one http://zazaseacow.wordpress.com/2012/06/16/10/ !
i ‘ll try your mediterranean-flavored dip! appreciated! lov gina! :)

Bam's KitchenNovember 7, 2012 - 1:08 am

Compared to any other sport I have done, swimming makes me the most hungry. I do not know if it the extra calories spent by me shivering in the water as it is always so cold or the fact I need to really concentrate on rhymic breathing to get me through the laps but I am starving at the end. If this dip was at the other end of the pool I would swim faster to get to the end. Take care of your knees, we only get one set! BAM

vivekaNovember 7, 2012 - 3:32 am

Swimming is good for the whole body – every little muscle get their share! Was school champion in medley – was swimming and swimming and swimming for years – then I stopped … and I have never got the urge back. Just like with my reading. It’s the best exercise you can give yourself and all ages will befit from it – and look at the bodies on all swimmers – magical. You will lose weight and be trimmed. Glad you found something that you enjoy and look forward to do. Sweet Harissa Corn and Halloumi Dip, something completely new for me – but I will put on file … have to use tinned corn. Visit Commander’s Palace when I visited New Orleans – great place.

hotlyspicedNovember 7, 2012 - 4:03 am

That was so funny, Smidge. Swimming really is the greatest leveler – everything is revealed and all is there for everyone to see. And if that’s not bad enough, then you have to wear a cap and goggles. I have new goggles that dig so tightly into my face that when I get out, for the next four hours, I have huge bags under my eyes. This swimming business can really age you. But, like you, it’s the best exercise and good for old joints! I did a squad swim this morning at 6.15 in the fast lane! The lane was full of boof-head blokes and I had a horrible time. Every time I turned my head to take a breath a tidal wave would smack me in the face and choke me. After the lesson I told the instructor I wanted a lane set aside for the mummies! xx

Rhoda KirwanNovember 7, 2012 - 4:03 am

Barbara your description of you swimming made me laugh out loud! Brilliant post. And fab recipe.

vbholmesNovember 7, 2012 - 4:21 am

Promenade ClaireNovember 7, 2012 - 6:12 am

Yes I’m laughing Smidge, but laughing WITH you ! And I’m jealous you can wear fins in the pool, not something we can do here. But you’ll get there, practice and patience my friend !
And I’m drooling at the dip, just love Harissa, but genius of you to add sweetcorn and haloumi….. look slike I need to do some laps :)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 6:56 am

It does require a completely different subset of physical skills and abilities.. I hope I get that rhythm eventually!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 6:56 am

It used to be the chocolate bar from the vending machine with my locker money when I was a kid:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 6:58 am

Wow.. I didn’t know you were a runner, good on you!! I can’t run and swimming is my only hope, lol, now that I can’t bike. How do they make this look so easy??

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 6:58 am

I’m going back in this morning, it’s just got to get easier, right;)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 6:58 am

Now, that would be nice if I develop those!! I never thought of that!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 6:59 am

I hope your back is better now?? Maybe we should just sit down, take a breath and eat a muffin:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:00 am

That’s a great idea.. there’s always a pool in the hotel that no one seems to use. xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:01 am

I’ve read about it in a lot of recipes.. it’s definitely a different cheese than I’m used to. I was worried it wouldn’t get “melty” but it did eventually:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:01 am

Thanks:) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:02 am

I love you.. seriously, hot wouldn’t be the best adjective though:D You should swim.. you could be a triathlete!!! What fun!!! I wish I’d done that at your age!!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:02 am

Hahaha.. I could be “that lady” in the pool with tinted goggles, lol!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:02 am

I’m so glad.. we need a few more laughs, eh?

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:03 am

I’m headed there again today.. try, try again!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:03 am

Soo hungry.. maybe one of your chocolate treats would work next time:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:05 am

Hahaha.. we should write a joint blog post one day, you’re hilarious! I need one of those robes with the hood..Four years and counting! But I would be lucky to be in the Level Two class at the pool by then:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:08 am

Oh, just imagine the lovely swishing sounds your little baby must have heard:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:08 am

I think I would add a little more cheese/mayonnaise.. it was good, but I like my dips a little creamier:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:09 am

You do have a pool, your very own, but I suspect it’s quite cold there this time of year:D What if one heated it the pool to a high temperature, it might be more tempting then:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:10 am

Wow, there are so many proficient swimmers out there! How awesome is that, water-polo!! You swim in the sea? Doubly awesome! I’m off to check out your link!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:11 am

I know.. what is it?? I think maybe the shivering?? Or those vending machines.. I always got to spend my locker money when I was through for the day. Yes.. the question is, do I have both knees repaired at once, so it’s over with?? xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:12 am

A champion!! Wow, good for you!! Maybe they just tuckered you right out! Sometimes we don’t want to go back to things we did too much of, eh? I hope I get trimmed but I guess my knees will be better for it. I think tinned corn would work as long as it was drained and patted dry? xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:14 am

Yes.. I had those “rings” around my eyes too, lol! I’m so impressed that you swim, it’s so difficult, just accidentally give those blokes a “whip kick” in the thigh when you go past, that might help:D I hope you get a mummies lane. We have slow, medium and fast.. no man would be caught dead in the slow lane, lol!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:14 am

Glad I gave you a laugh, Rhoda!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 7:14 am

I had a bad fall at work .. 2008 and I hit my knee very bad – it was aching for nearly 2,5 year and suddenly one morning I woke up and no pain. It was visceral ligaments and there is nothing to do then wait for it to heal by itself – didn’t believe them, but they were right. I hope it will work for you with the swimming. I really do. The water makes the movements more soft on our ligaments.

spreeNovember 7, 2012 - 7:45 am

Smidge you cracked me up, over and over, with this one! This is a piece of some very colorful, comical, tickle-the-bones writing! I LOVED it, so much it needed three readings! ;) and with each reading, different parts amused me most! (you are one very brave woman to put on a speedo under flourescent lighting with eyes open! No, that would be ME being brave – you on the other hand were probably “designed” for thing!!) And your “other” dip – that’s a winner too! Great great post! Thank you! xx

gastrogardenerNovember 7, 2012 - 7:59 am

I commend you on your courage! I was a competative swimmer years ago, and for while in the not so distant past I competed in long distance open water swims – 1-3 miles… It’s all about efficiency. PM me if you want, there are some good resources to help.

I agree I am always famished afterwards!

The Scrumptious PumpkinNovember 7, 2012 - 8:39 am

Yum, that dip looks so delicious, sounds like you’ve earned it. Great post! :)

Eva TaylorNovember 7, 2012 - 9:24 am

Make sure to find out how often they chlorinate, my friend acquired some weird rash from a very high end hotel in Toronto.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 10:59 am

Eeewww!! My daughter used to work there, so I believe they’re fairly diligent.. but I’m going to ask!!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 11:02 am

I wish it were so.. I have a knee repair in my not-too-distant future I’m afraid. Just trying to get strong enough for it:) I’m glad yours worked out on its own!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 11:03 am

Good god, it is a humiliating experience to try a new sport. Well, I did make it to Seniors level in Elementary School, but I’m a pathetic swimmer to say the least. I got a few tips this morning.. so I’m feeling optimistic:D xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 11:04 am

What is PM? I would love some resources! I got a tip from the lifeguard on duty today. I’m so impressed that you were swimming competitively!!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 11:05 am

I’m not sure if I’ve earned it.. but I always seem to crave chocolate afterwards;)

The Blissful AdventurerNovember 7, 2012 - 11:06 am

“nothing is more humbling than trying to wedge a middle-aged, 100+ pounds of tepid colored flesh into a tiny black-bottomed spandex swimsuit” – I could not help but put myself in that same scenario. If I had to sport a speedo these days I would never be able to exhale as I strolled a faux-confident and pasty white walk of shame to the poolside. If my knees go, and they likely will, I am just going to have to be the fat guy at the bar bragging that at least I dont smoke. This post is so good. I am waiting on the book :-)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 11:08 am

Hahaha.. What happens if the bar is by/in the pool??

susielindauNovember 7, 2012 - 11:19 am

I love it! I too recently tried swimming again and swore I would get right back in after splashing about for what was only a half hour. It has been two months! Oops!
The soup looks delish!

Just Add AttitudeNovember 7, 2012 - 11:19 am

Sorry to hear about your injury I hope that it gets sorted soon. I enjoyed your swimming story – I am afraid to put my head in the water when I swim as I have never mastered the art of breathing and swimming! :)

HetterbellNovember 7, 2012 - 12:08 pm

Your description is so lively, you really brought it all to life. It made me miss swimming. I haven’t done it for years, but it would be fun again. I’m glad you enjoyed it so much and hope that you continue to do so. H xxx

Rock SaltNovember 7, 2012 - 1:23 pm

This was hilarious, I love it! I used to love swimming as a kid but I haven’t been back as an adult – I’m not sure whether to be encouraged or put off my this post ;)

vivekaNovember 7, 2012 - 1:26 pm

I hope the swimming will do the job for you and that you will get your knee repaired. You’re still young.

CharlesNovember 7, 2012 - 3:25 pm

Hahaha, oh, I know that feeling. The first time I put swimming goggles on I thought my eyeballs were gonna get sucked out of my head. It was a terrible feeling!!

Love the look of the dip! Did you ever try making your own harissa? I make a version which isn’t quite traditional, but I prefer it to the regular stuff. I use Antillean habanero chillies which are fantastically fragrant which makes for a beautiful aroma and flavour… I posted it on my site some time ago if you wanted to take a look :)

restlessjoNovember 7, 2012 - 3:37 pm

Your knees might be shot, Smidge, but it’s nice to see you hanging on to your sense of humour. I have no room to mock- I cannot ride a bike and I swim even more inefficiently than you. Maybe bread would have fewer calories then corn chips? Just a thought, and almost certainly wrong!

BluejellybeansNovember 7, 2012 - 4:32 pm

You are hilarious Smidge! This sounds like a delicious recipe, perfect for and “after pool” party.
Have fun tomorrow :)

Aimee@clevermuffinNovember 7, 2012 - 4:38 pm

Absolutely! It’s been a couple of years, but backs are funny things. I have to stay on top of looking after it. But you know what has helped – owning a kitchen aid! (I’m not joking!). Hope you recover fast soon x

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 5:52 pm

I think back are, indeed, tricky, it’s good to be careful now.. so you won’t be in my “boat” at my age:D

sallybrNovember 7, 2012 - 6:31 pm

Beats me… still, I find the triathlon an amazing feat, even if it’s not the Iron Man, it’s still a lot of fun and very challenging. IN my next life, count me in ;-)

(seriously, though, I wish you the best on your recovery. ONe of the reasons I cannot run a marathon anymore is a knee injury, mainly self inflicted from…. well, from being me!) ;-)

musingmarNovember 7, 2012 - 7:32 pm

Oh, this was so funny! Although I’m not a swimmer, and certainly not an athlete, I can relate to your story of struggling into your bathing suit, having recently bought a Spanx to, shall we say, add more sleekness to the lines of a dress I wore to a wedding. Good luck with the swimming, and good for you! I’m feeling very challenged to get back to exercising, and I don’t quite know why (maybe because I’d rather blog?). But, if I had a dish of that dip waiting for me afterwards, I think I’d be motivated to have a session on the treadmill!

ruthieNovember 7, 2012 - 8:29 pm

I used to love to swim! Unfortunately, I was so uncoordinated that I, too, was quickly ID’d as the one most likely to drown. In school, when I took the swimming classes, they soon had me teaching the beginners — figured it was safer to keep me in the shallow end where they didn’t have to watch my every (uncoordinated) move! ;)
Sorry to hear about the knees. Right there with you on that. But, this dip, very intriguing. I love corn, so it’s sounding like something I need to make.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 9:14 pm

Oops is right.. but you have been hiking lots:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 9:16 pm

I’m fine.. I’ve had bad knees my whole life.. they’re just starting to complain now:D I don’t know why.. years of running and aerobics.. maybe that’s what did it;)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 9:16 pm

You should jump back in! I went again this morning and am starting to just love it!! It’s so much more meditative than upstairs in the gym!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 9:17 pm

Haha, definitely feel encouraged, I’m probably as bad as it gets, lol! You’d probs do much better!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 9:17 pm

You know I never have.. I’m going to take a look at your recipe. Where do you buy those Antillean chillies?? Are they dried, in a jar or fresh?? They sound amazing!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 9:18 pm

Yes.. the way things are going, the humour is all that’s going to be left;D I vote for the bread.. it would be yummy right about now!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 9:19 pm

I did ok this morning, a life guard gave me a few pointers on my front crawl and things are going a bit better:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 9:20 pm

I was thinking it was a lot like Spanx.. I forgot my flip flops on deck and had to pull a wet swimsuit back on to go out there.. now that was a challenge! Good grief! Blogging is very tempting.. I love it and we get to sit whilst writing:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 7, 2012 - 9:20 pm

Hahaha, we’d get along famously then! Maybe one day we’ll be in that senior’s group together, lol!

TandyNovember 7, 2012 - 11:56 pm

I am trying very hard not to laugh as my backstroke is not that good either – I was swimming a lot at one stage for my shoulder. I used the aqua pool instead of the training pool so that no-one would see me :) Good luck and have fun!

Bam's KitchenNovember 8, 2012 - 5:01 am

Barbara, put your surgery off as long as possible if you need knee replacements. Recovery is not exactly a piece of cake. Original equipment is always best. Take care of yourself.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 8, 2012 - 9:08 am

I have discovered a surgeon who corrects by moving the muscles back in place.. I agree, having fewer “spare parts” is the way to go. I’m waiting for my appointment with her.. xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 8, 2012 - 9:09 am

There’s no hiding in this pool, thankfully, most have a big ego and don’t want to go in the “slow” lane:D

ValNovember 8, 2012 - 2:14 pm

Well done Smidge, you’ll be doing flip turns in no time! Every time I go swimming my stomach gets a workout from the dressing room to to pool (and back).

Bam's KitchenNovember 8, 2012 - 4:35 pm

Best wishes and take care of yourself!

Norma ChangNovember 9, 2012 - 4:50 pm

Your chiropractor sounds like she has a great sense of humour too. I laughed out loud reading through the entire post. I am sure you will be swimming the fast lane pretty soon. Sure hope the water helps your knee.
That dip is just what’s needed after a swim.

GrannyNovember 9, 2012 - 5:20 pm

Great read! You are brave. I was just thinking the other day that I have not owned a bathing suit in at least ten years (though I can swim rather well, if I may say so myself – my father was an instructor at some point)… and promised myself I never would. Though reading this I can imagine being in the water again. Funny how we perceive our bodies upon entering middle age. I exercise every day, yet feel quite unfit for a bathing suit. On another note, I’ve been playing tag with so many blogs that I am afraid I’ve missed stopping here for a while. May I ask? Knee injury?

saffronandhoneyNovember 9, 2012 - 6:26 pm

Yes to jumping back in! ps. I love harissa so this is fantastic.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 10, 2012 - 11:22 pm

It’s such a sad comment on body perception for sure.. and I’m as guilty as the next person. I hope you pick up a suit and just jump in, it’s not as bad as I thought:) No recent knee injury.. just hip pain that must be a secondary pain to an old knee issue. Time catches up with us!!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 10, 2012 - 11:23 pm

Robin is hilarious.. he has me laughing from the minute I get there until I leave. It’s a highlight of my day, which is awesome considering he puts me through a lot of pain while he’s making me laugh:D I think the swimming will be great. xx

KristyNovember 11, 2012 - 7:33 am

I’ve never been much of a swimmer, so I give you huge credit for taking the plunge and going for laps. I don’t know that I could complete one lap! Sounds like it felt great to get in and moving though. Fabulous recipe too. It does sound like it would be good with bacon.

The HookNovember 11, 2012 - 9:49 am

Emma’s Sassy Salsa

Autumn beckoned Katie and I.. who were we to argue? A photography essay prescribed by the remnants of fading aspen hues. Here is a wee slideshow of the rest… ♥ One of my daughter’s awesome girlfriends, Emma, made her this sassy salsa and of course she couldn’t wait to make it for me. It was…

Who is that stunning girl in the photo? Is that your daughter? Or the creator of this recipe? The lighting in the photo is gorgeous and very ‘Autumn’. I love how there are so few ingredients in this salsa and incredible that there’s just the juice of a lime in the dressing. And this would indeed, be very good for you. And it’s colourful too! xx

Kate BurmaOctober 7, 2012 - 1:20 am

Looks so yummy! I’m hungry now!! :)

Choc Chip UruOctober 7, 2012 - 1:36 am

Beautiful photos! Is that Emma? Love the tang of lime juice with all of these fabulous fresh ingredients.

the second servingOctober 7, 2012 - 7:58 am

Love these photos right in the heart of autumn. So beautiful! And of course, this sassy salsa looks delicious. Sometimes it’s the most simple things that really taste the best.

AnonymousOctober 7, 2012 - 7:59 am

Great photos! And that salsa…. Delish! I never thought of adding cucumber to salsa before. Brilliant!

gastrogardenerOctober 7, 2012 - 8:08 am

Simply lovely. Both the salsa and the subject.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 7, 2012 - 8:42 am

That’s my daughter in the photos.. I’m trying to get as comfortable taking “people” photos as food, lol, and my kids are going to be the “guinea pigs”. Emma is her lovely friend from school who made this salsa.. I’m hoping she will pose for me as well one day:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 7, 2012 - 8:43 am

Me too.. it’s the sort of salsa you start to crave, it has such a fresh taste:) Thanks for visiting me!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 7, 2012 - 8:44 am

The colors sure worked! She took some of me, but I was wearing oranges and browns.. not quite the same effect. It’s like food photos.. you start to see what can be really effective. Thanks, CCU:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 7, 2012 - 8:45 am

There are a few orangey trees left, but most have begun to be in their final stages.. there’s still a beauty in that for sure:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 7, 2012 - 8:45 am

Thanks, Mandy.. I’m making the sweet potatoes today and then we still have tomorrow off. Can’t wait to see the family:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 7, 2012 - 8:47 am

I’ve just realized I haven’t had photos of my family here.. this is my daughter Katie:D xx

Emma’s salsa!! Me loves! :) I love salsas, all of them…they’re my favorite because of all the freshness and this one sounds just perfect. Thank you for sharing!

yummychunkletOctober 7, 2012 - 10:10 am

ChgoJohnOctober 7, 2012 - 10:13 am

This is such a great salsa, Barb. You’ve got me considering heading to the grocery for ingredients. (After yesterday, this was to be a no shopping day!) So easy to prepare and so fresh looking. I couldn’t go wrong.
Your daughter is a pretty young woman, Barb, and your photos were well shot. A wonderful collaboration.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 7, 2012 - 10:22 am

I’m hoping my son will cooperate too.. it’s his turn today:D Katie turns 21 this year and we missed Phil’s 18 last year (he was away playing hockey) I love to photograph to document this special years! Now go shopping!! I am!!

sallybrOctober 7, 2012 - 12:13 pm

Well, no wonder she is so gorgeous! As a geneticis of sorts (ok, I “do” bacteria, but genes are genes), I can see that your DNA passed well to her ;-)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 7, 2012 - 12:21 pm

Hahaha.. if only her “jeans” could pass on to me;)

musingmarOctober 7, 2012 - 4:49 pm

I love the way autumnal light brings a magical quality to photos – a perfect setting for your lovely daughter.

I so wish I had read your recipe on my iPhone an hour ago. We just squeaked in under the closing time wire at the market, and now I won’t be able to get what I need to make this salsa until Tuesday. It looks so delicious!

ceciliagOctober 7, 2012 - 6:06 pm

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I think your daughter should take to wearing a paper bag on her head though as she will be blinding the boys with all that stunning face. Poor boys.. c

Bam's KitchenOctober 7, 2012 - 7:20 pm

Your daughter is beautiful. No need for senior photos and spending 1000′s of dollars on a professional as your shots are way better. Loving Emma’s zesty salsa- sounds good on some grilled fish. Take care, BAM

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 7, 2012 - 9:33 pm

Hahaha.. I’ll make the suggestion.. life would be easier for us that way as well;)

Three Well BeingsOctober 7, 2012 - 10:26 pm

Your daughter is beautiful and so is your photography, Barb. You have such a good eye, although your “focus” may have made it easier for you to capture great photos! :-) And the salsa is a winner, too! I love a good chunky salsa! D

movita beaucoupOctober 8, 2012 - 7:40 am

Your posts are one of my favourite parts of Sunday mornings. I let them sit in my Google Reader all week, sit down with some coffee, and pop on over here for a visit. Thanks for that, lady!!

KaristaOctober 8, 2012 - 8:09 am

What a stunning young lady Smidge! So lovely, just like her beautiful Mom. Gorgeous photos and love that delish looking salsa. It is so nice to assume the role of sous chef once and a while :)

What a beautiful daughter, in a magical setting. We make a salsa like this, too. Delicious in its simplicity.

niasunsetOctober 8, 2012 - 12:32 pm

She is so beautiful and photographs too. This salsa seems so delicious. Thank you dear Barbara, Happy Thanksgiving Day. Blessing and Happiness to you both, love, nia

Keep Calm and Eat OnOctober 8, 2012 - 5:15 pm

I love, love, love photo number 1 and 2. It does help when the subject is as beautiful as your daughter but mama did a good job capturing on lens. As I looked at the photos I started to think of my Little One growing up one day…they grow up too fast don’t they?

wendy@chezchloeOctober 8, 2012 - 9:40 pm

Sweet. Tell me… Did you use a filter or do some color editing? They have a lovely color quality/ hue.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenOctober 8, 2012 - 10:39 pm

For this sort of photography, I like to use a filter on Picmonkey to get a vintage vibe going. It’s a ton of fun.. you should take a look:D xx
