Love those!! So pretty for valentines day!! It’s been awhile since making soap. I need to do this. My mom would love them!

TessaJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:01 am

Adorable little cakes of soap!

annashortcakesJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:02 am

Love your photos. What editing program do you use? I love how you superimpose words, etc on the photos. I am in the market and having trouble choosing.

gfreeglowJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:03 am

Such a sweet idea!

KaristaJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:14 am

I had no idea this is how you make soap! I am completely in love with the scent of rose. I keep rose oil in my closet and spritz my clothes with it. :) And often spritz myself. LOL! Pinning and sharing!! So fun Smidge!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:21 am

Thanks.. They were so fun to make.. I might have to make more:D xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:21 am

Thank you, Tessa.xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:22 am

I use Picmonkey.. it’s free or you can upgrade to have more selection. I find it quick and easy to get started. I’m just in an Adobe Photoshop class so I’ll let you know how that goes:) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:23 am

xoxo

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:23 am

It’s a fun little craft.. and pretty versatile too xoxo

Your posts are always such a lovely way to end my day Smidge, thank you!

annashortcakesJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:33 am

Please do! The hubby can get a discount on it as a student but i want to know how it works/if it is any good before I spend the $.

andy1076January 29, 2013 - 8:41 am

These are so cute! :D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:46 am

We are offered a discount while we’re in the class. I think it is not “upgradable” though. Since it’s a student version, it is affordable but you can’t get any of the newer version upgrades when they come out. So that makes it a tough decision. It’s pretty advanced, but I think it can do so much more in the end. I’m hoping to draw and scan and then work with my own graphics eventually. I have found Picmonkey a really quick way to do fun stuff for free. They have filters, text, etc. that are quick to learn and use. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Chica AndaluzaJanuary 29, 2013 - 9:17 am

Gorgeous – I want to go and fill my bathtub right now!

{Main St. Cuisine}January 29, 2013 - 10:05 am

How lovely! I can see making little gifts for friends and family with your “recipe.”. Tell me, Smidge are the glycerin cubes found in most larger craft stores or is it easier to purchase online? Unless I’m missing something, this looks fairly easy for a novice crafter. :-)

glutenfreezenJanuary 29, 2013 - 10:16 am

I love them and I sear when I’m looking at the pictures I can smell roses. :) They look relatively simple to make, I think even I could do it!

glutenfreezenJanuary 29, 2013 - 10:17 am

Meant to say “swear” of course. ;)

Donna FrascaJanuary 29, 2013 - 10:28 am

How cute these are!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 12:03 pm

I found them at our “big box” Michael’s store. I just saw Martha made them with a different technique.. And she stamped xo in them.. Too cute! She also said to spray with alcohol to eliminate bubbles. But I wonder if stirring would work just as well..

hotlyspicedJanuary 29, 2013 - 12:14 pm

What a beautiful idea. These are so gorgeous, Smidge and I just love the colour of them. I’ll have to rush out and buy all the ingredients. And these would make wonderful gifts – if you could bare to part with them! xx

imagesbytdashfieldJanuary 29, 2013 - 12:25 pm

I’ve got a collection of dried roses from prior bouquets…could I use some of them? This is great! xx

Choc Chip UruJanuary 29, 2013 - 1:00 pm

That is such a beautiful soap my friend in both smell and look :)

Cheers
Choc Chip Uru

wendy@chezchloeJanuary 29, 2013 - 1:05 pm

You aren’t just good at cooking up edible things. What sweet little gifts these make. I’ll try to hit a Michaels before Valentine’s Day. thanks for the inspiration. x wendy

HetterbellJanuary 29, 2013 - 2:03 pm

What an absolutely gorgeous idea! You are truly multi-talented. xxx

Eva TaylorJanuary 29, 2013 - 2:16 pm

Oh how pretty! You are putting me to shame, I haven’t done one valentines thing yet! Good on you!

squishymonsterJanuary 29, 2013 - 2:27 pm

My gosh, these are gorgeous! I def. would never mind receiving such pretty gifts for Vday =)

Mad DogJanuary 29, 2013 - 2:38 pm

Fantastic ;-)

Claire @ Claire K CreationsJanuary 29, 2013 - 3:13 pm

Ooh how lovely. I bet your bathroom smelt pretty good after the bath too!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 3:50 pm

I’ll be making a change to the supplies list… roses should be organic, no need to have pesticides joining you in the tub:) Maybe call your florist to find out. If not, try finding edible flowers in a whole food market and let those dry.. pansies would be so pretty.. even a whole one xx

niasunsetJanuary 29, 2013 - 4:47 pm

first of all I should say this, they were so lovely when I saw my e-mail message with little red hearts :) and opened with many of them… and then this beautiful and romantic recipe for a soap… you are amazing. Million Thanks, love, nia

Aimee@clevermuffinJanuary 29, 2013 - 5:10 pm

These are just adorable! And PERFECT for valentines day. I have been wanting to try and make soap for ages but my boyfriend keeps telling me it would be too messy. These seem proof in point I could make them.

saffronandhoneyJanuary 29, 2013 - 6:58 pm

How gorgeous! These would make beautiful gifts.

Emilie@TheCleverCarrotJanuary 29, 2013 - 6:58 pm

These are too sweet Smidge! My mom makes all kinds of skincare products and I cant wait to pass this on to her! Maybe she’ll make me some :) xx

Pride in Photos PhotographyJanuary 29, 2013 - 7:05 pm

The artwork in these soaps just beautiful….kudos to you my friend!

spreeJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:02 pm

why would we ever think of going out when (staying in) we can bathe (together) in roses? a plan is taking shape and I’m liking it lots! ;)
Lovely idea this, Smidge, sweet as can be!! xxo

yummychunkletJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:46 pm

What a fun non-food idea for Valentine’s Day!

TandyJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:54 pm

It has been a very long time since I last made soaps, and my usual mould is heart shaped :)

AliceJanuary 29, 2013 - 9:52 pm

I bet they smell and feel lovely. Sorta want to take a bite too.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:21 pm

Oh my gosh.. it was the absolutely opposite of messy, in fact, I was surprised at how fast and easy it was. Candle making would be different I think? xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:21 pm

Oh, nia.. your comments are always so heartfelt! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:22 pm

Glad to be of assistance;) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:23 pm

They would be a pretty gift, I should have photographed them like that:D xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:26 pm

I was just wondering how long each would last? xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:27 pm

Thank you, Donna! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:27 pm

The great thing is that they can be as light or as strongly scented.. I know some people like a softer fragrance:) xx

ChgoJohnJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:40 pm

Such a beautifully presented post, Barb, expertly photographed and staged.
I have to be honest, though. I doubt if I’ll ever give soap making a try. I’ll stick to pasta and cheese, thank you, but, if ever I change my mind, you’ll be the first to know. Maybe we could try a little bartering. I send you some ravioli for a little soap? It could work. :)

Sue Schlabach 129twigandvineJanuary 30, 2013 - 7:32 am

Sweetness incarnate!! I’ve made some scented soaps with glycerine and lavender. But so lovely with the big petals. Hmmmm, seems I still have some of those supplies somewhere. I wonder where……..

Sibella at bakingwithsibella.comJanuary 30, 2013 - 8:13 am

Amazing! :)

SarahJanuary 30, 2013 - 8:39 am

I’ve always wanted to try making glycerin soaps, but never though it was this simple. I need to try this. Thanks Barb!

Food,Photography & FranceJanuary 30, 2013 - 10:31 am

Very pretty stuff. Beautifully put together. You’re a whizz:)

vivekaJanuary 30, 2013 - 11:45 am

So pretty, so adorable … so sweet, so romantic – I just want a whole bunch of them.

Norma ChangJanuary 30, 2013 - 12:47 pm

I too had no idea that’s how soap is made and so easy. Yours are so pretty.

spicegirlflaJanuary 30, 2013 - 5:44 pm

Aww…this are soo cute! I love this idea; you come up with sweetest things!!

petit4chocolatierJanuary 30, 2013 - 7:28 pm

Very pretty and such a wonderful idea!

Three Well BeingsJanuary 30, 2013 - 10:50 pm

These are so pretty, Smidge! You really did make them look so easy to make. You’ve given me such good Valentine’s ideas. I’d better get acting on some of them! :-)

The HookJanuary 31, 2013 - 8:14 am

Perfect timing for this one, cutie! Well done!

GrannyJanuary 31, 2013 - 5:20 pm

Those look delicious! Oops… there goes the sweet tooth again! These would make a perfect treat for a bit of pampering for a person sans Valentine! Add chocolate (or wine) for a truly decadent celebration of self-love.

lemoncakeFebruary 1, 2013 - 9:04 am

What lovely soap’s! Great idea.

Saskia (1=2)February 1, 2013 - 5:05 pm

These are absolutely beautiful Barbara. My son is obsessed with soap at the moment. I’d love to make these with him!

Eldon MenousekFebruary 7, 2013 - 5:12 am

Hello there! Would you mind if I share your blog with my facebook group? There’s a lot of people that I think would really enjoy your content. Please let me know. Cheers

musingmarFebruary 9, 2013 - 9:10 pm

Oh my, another thing I’d like to try! I’ve never made soap before, and of course, after seeing yours now I want to! Thank you for the shout out, Barb. It’s always a pleasure to mention your blog – I enjoy it so much that I’d like all my friends and followers to see it too!

What Swimming, Eminem, Biscoff and Broccoli All Have In Common

I’ve always wanted to do one of those “In my kitchen” posts. But who am I kidding? I’m so “all over the place” that “In my kitchen” is virtually impossible. So, instead, how about “what’s new and notable”? 1. Well, I can swim in a straight line almost a straight line now, as long as…

sallybrNovember 27, 2012 - 9:03 am

Like like like your post… busy busy busy bee…

Eminem bit made me laugh – I have probably three followers, so all I can say is that it’s a good thing I don’t suffer from self esteem problems ;-)

congrats on swimming a straight line, and WOW on the painting. I envvy people with artistic inclinations, as I have NONE. ZERO. NADA.

I can do 45 pushups, man style – does that count for ANYTHING? ;-)

Eva TaylorNovember 27, 2012 - 9:15 am

I saw that you won the book at my friend Barb’s blog, and I was jealous! Lucky you! We chopped down our tree on Sunday and I hope to have it decorated tonight, but I have come down with a bad chest cold and possibly a sinus infection, so we’ll have to play it by ear. The orzo looks lovely, although I have to say that is one pasta I am totally conflicted about. If I wanted rice, I would have asked for rice ;-) !

thecompletecookbookNovember 27, 2012 - 9:24 am

What a delightful post Smidge! Hope things settle down for you soon so you can have a little more time for yourself.
Have a beautiful and happy day.
:-) Mandy xo

spreeNovember 27, 2012 - 9:26 am

Eminem likes Smidge….that’s almost enough to make me like Eminem. I’m picturing what will result when your eye for composition and beauty in the kitchen meets your brushes and oils…I can barely wait to see it here! Love (and am thoroughly jealous) that you can swim even an almost straight line. Love Alice Hoffman and am ordering Dovekeepers! Don’t know Boscoff spread, but you think I should? And your salad sounds fantastic, Smidge! I’m quite sure that will be seen on our table within the week. wonderful post! xx

edithlevyphotographyNovember 27, 2012 - 9:32 am

Great post. I’ve read The Dovekeepers. I loved it.

gastrogardenerNovember 27, 2012 - 9:47 am

wow eminem! that would get me to wondering… And you HAVE been busy! Which is good considering the alternative!

cravesadventureNovember 27, 2012 - 9:53 am

Loving your post – #2 – ha! – love Alice Hoffman and have this book on my reading list:) You have been busy – Have a Great One:)

RobinNovember 27, 2012 - 9:59 am

I thoroughly enjoyed this post, Smidge. Eminem. How about that? :) The orzo salad sounds delish.

ValNovember 27, 2012 - 10:08 am

I think that spread is called ‘Speculoos’ in France and Belgium, but is hard to find here in Ireland.
‘Eminem’s new single featuring Smidge’… has a good ring to it :)

saffronandhoneyNovember 27, 2012 - 10:37 am

Speculoos is addictively amazing and Alice Hoffman is a wonderful author, so it all sounds like a great combination to me!

EmilieNovember 27, 2012 - 10:42 am

You are seriously overachieving! Not only did you do new and notables but we got a recipe? I barely squeaked out my “hey my nephew is cute so you don’t get a real post because I am playing with him” post…. ACK!!!

cookinginsensNovember 27, 2012 - 10:43 am

Nice salad.

Korena in the KitchenNovember 27, 2012 - 10:56 am

Nice to get caught up with you, Barb. ;) What is Biscoff, exactly?? (I’m off to do a Google search!)

Korena in the KitchenNovember 27, 2012 - 10:58 am

OMG, it’s speculoos spread?! I have to get my hands on some of that…!!!

kateshrewsdayNovember 27, 2012 - 11:11 am

Gracious, Barbara, Eminem. The boy has taste…

BrittanyNovember 27, 2012 - 11:18 am

I like to live in fantasy land, so I am going to pretend that’s the REAL slim shady!! SWEET!! This yummyness looks so good I need to start using orzo more.

Choc Chip UruNovember 27, 2012 - 11:45 am

Haha my friend you have been more than busy of late and seem to be on a winning at life streak :D
Keep it up!

The Scrumptious PumpkinNovember 27, 2012 - 12:34 pm

You’re reminding me that I need to get moving on the Christmas decorating which I haven’t even started – your tree looks lovely :)

SarahNovember 27, 2012 - 1:21 pm

I really love this post. You’re so busy, but I love that you’ve written about it. I feel less overwhelmed….in that I’m not the only one :) Thanks for this recipe too. I seriously need to make better food like this. ASAP. I’m blaming Ina for the extra few pounds that found me these past couple of months. Speaking of Ina! Congratulations Smidge!!!! I know you wanted this one. It’s fabulous, and I can not WAIT to see what you try first from it.

Eminem? That’s cool! And it trumps the fact that David Hasselhoff is following me on Twitter….which I will not get over any time soon, lol.

Profiteroles & PonytailsNovember 27, 2012 - 2:38 pm

I just read Sarah’s comment and I like to say ditto on all fronts. Things feel hectic right now, but it’s nice to know I’m not alone. I’ve also gained a few pounds thanks to Ina and those salted caramel brownies. (The downside of blogging.) Thanks for the shout out. I’m delighted that you’ve won Ina’s book, which I’ve just ordered for you. It should be there on Dec. 4th according to the shipping estimate. The ponytails said “Mom, how can you win this?” when they saw the name Barb on the little slip of paper. So, from one Barb to another “congratulations!”

Just Add AttitudeNovember 27, 2012 - 3:41 pm

I really love this post – hearing bits of your busy life. Your Christmas tree looks splendid – I have this mad self-imposed rule that I don’t put up decorations until the 1st December but I think I might break it this year. Please never worry if you are busy about reading my blog – feel free to skip it. Life’s so busy sometimes – especially at this time of year. ;)

yummychunkletNovember 27, 2012 - 4:55 pm

Who knows? Someone named Eminem is following you!

Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime CordialNovember 27, 2012 - 7:16 pm

Darling, I would ADORE seeing what’s in your kitchen, should you ever feel like playing. But it’s just as fun catching up on what you’re up to – swimming is great (I’m lousy at it), and Eminem as a follower is very very cool! :) And this is now the third time Biscoff has been mentioned to me in the past few weeks..

mjskitNovember 27, 2012 - 8:04 pm

A lot happening in your life! I do understand how books something unconsciously make us act different, but I haven’t gotten down on the floor to clean the grout yet. :) Love the orzo dish! Healthy and tasty!

JacquelineNovember 27, 2012 - 8:38 pm

I love this “all over the place” post. I’m sitting here nodding my head like one of those wobbly dogs to everything you’ve written. Except Biscoff … Google and I will be sorting that out soon enough!

PS I must remember never to read you blog when I’ve skipped dinner … Yum. Just YUM.

Bam's KitchenNovember 27, 2012 - 10:45 pm

I think you most certain should make some M & M cookies for your new fan! What a riot! Maybe he likes your poetry? You have been a very busy girl and even though life is quite crazy at the moment I wanted to do more than just ” like”, but let you know how much I look forward to your posts. Have a wonderful holiday season Smidge. BAM

TandyNovember 27, 2012 - 10:48 pm

I’m also behind on blog reading! Thank you for sharing Smidge :)

Claire @ Claire K CreationsNovember 27, 2012 - 11:12 pm

eminem must have lost himself in the music and now he’ll never let you go. What a great little share. I’d be happy if I could paint a lemon too. I’ve got stick people down but that’s about my limit (oh and box houses and the sun).
At the moment I’m reading the Young House Love blog book which has me running to DIY every time I read a few pages. Nothing like a book to kick start the action!

Food,Photography & FranceNovember 28, 2012 - 1:05 am

Swimming in a straight line with efficient strokes is always going to be easier than the strokes needed to paint still lives in the manner of Dutch and Flemish masters:)

hotlyspicedNovember 28, 2012 - 3:02 am

I’m behind in my blog reading too! Life just seems to get busier and busier. I was going to comment on all your other photos but then I couldn’t get past your Christmas Tree. It is absolutely stunning and so beautifully decorated. We buy a real tree and so we can’t buy it until about the 15th of December otherwise, with all the heat, it just dies. It’s such a shame because our decorations are only up for such a short period of time xx

petit4chocolatierNovember 28, 2012 - 4:03 am

Barbara, absolutely beautiful and elegant; as always! I love your blog. Barb and the pony tails are wonderful!! Love her blog. The orzo salad is perfect!! Congrats on Eminem! That is pretty cool!!

photographybyjoyleneNovember 28, 2012 - 4:52 am

Fun post! I have yet to even check out Instagram. Not on Twitter either. I wonder if I’m missing out on something. So much to do already! Looks like a good book – thanks for posting – I love to read, but it’s one of those obsessive things that keeps me from being productive :) . What does Biscoff Spread taste like? It looks like peanut butter! Good luck with your painting – if your other aesthetic talents are any indicator, you should ace that in no time! You have inspired me to take pictures of my tree. I am always behind in my reading AND posting, but I always enjoy your posts and think that they are all comment-worthy – at least the ones I see!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 28, 2012 - 7:30 am

Good point.. I may have to do some refining:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenNovember 28, 2012 - 7:31 am

What blog book is that? I’d love to take a look!

Sue Schlabach 129twigandvineNovember 28, 2012 - 7:40 am

Ahhhh, I love a post like this. Scrubbing, funny follows, good books, dried stuff that ends up being scrumptious…. I have a jar of that Lotus spread sent by a friend in France. I’ve single handedly consumed it spoonful by spoonful. It is hidden from the rest of the household. It’s called Speculoos in France. Such a funny word to see on the label while I sneak another spoonful.

AnonymousNovember 28, 2012 - 7:57 am

Eminem? I’m jealous! :)

My Life After Kids (Kathi)November 28, 2012 - 7:58 am

Sorry, the above comment was mine. I didn’t intend to be anonymous!

annashortcakesNovember 28, 2012 - 9:04 am

1) I have never liked Slim Shady. But since he likes you… that improves my opinion of him a him.
2) I have never heard of biscoff spread. What kind of flavor is it?
3) Congrats on the win.
4) The salad looks divine! I can’t wait to make it!

bitsandbreadcrumbsNovember 28, 2012 - 10:02 am

My kind of salad! Congrats on the cookbook and on all you’ve accomplished with decorating, painting, etc. Way ahead of me so far this year. ;)

Jed Gray (sportsglutton)November 28, 2012 - 12:04 pm

When do I get to read about this Wild Rum-Infused Eggnogg???? :-)

Three Well BeingsNovember 28, 2012 - 3:15 pm

I just loved this post, Barb. I might be short on time but I always want to read your posts. They are always beautiful and so well done…and this one had me laughing out loud! You struck my funny bone! I have some of those pre-holiday dreams, too, just like your Wild Rum-Infused Eggnog tree-lighting party! Except my dashed dreams are going on 40-years worth! Ha! And I have enjoyed Alice Hoffman in the past…not sure about this book review you’ve offered. I don’t know if I can take the pressure. :-) And painting lemons for bitterness? You are many things, but I sure don’t see you with any bit of bitterness in you. Your lemons would represent something really delicious, I know! I’m still chuckling…and I really love this recipe. It’s another winner! oxo

GrannyNovember 28, 2012 - 5:33 pm

Lovely. Hold on to that Biscoff (never heard of it, but if you say it is THAT good, I believe you wholeheartedly).. don’t share any with eminem (sorry dude), but having a bite with your lost and found friend would be appropriate. It could seal some sort of friendship oath. :-)

KarenNovember 28, 2012 - 6:02 pm

I just found a jar of Bischoff, my tree is up and I’m behind on my blog reading as well. I hate to hit the like button instead of reading and commenting…so I’m catching up with your posts I have missed now. Love orzo salads and yours looks terrific.

Ashley LarkinNovember 28, 2012 - 6:26 pm

Wow, Smidge! That was so fun. I love you more the more I learn about you. :-) Cracked up about Eminem and am cheering hard for you and your painting. Some day, some day…

TessaNovember 28, 2012 - 8:41 pm

Lovely salad!

ShiraNovember 28, 2012 - 9:01 pm

Adore your salad comment at the end Barbara – too apt and I think I heard that recently from a blogger I love ;) That orzo salad looks delicious!

Terri at Time To Be InspiredNovember 29, 2012 - 11:57 pm

I found Speculoos Cookie Butter at Trader Joe’s in the U.S. and it is imported from the Netherlands. I went looking for it after I read a description on a blog that said it was like “crack in a jar”. I think that’s an apt description. I think it tastes like those Biscoff cookies that you get from some airlines – a nice spice cookie but in a delicious spreadable form. Glad you found time to write about what’s keeping you busy. By the way, any idea where November went?

writerwannabe763November 30, 2012 - 8:36 am

You’re such a busy lady…and a ‘fit’ one at that and such a good cook…I think I’ll come and live at your house..lol Diane

Rachel @ The Pescetarian and the PigNovember 30, 2012 - 11:38 am

Wow, lady! Where do you find the time?! I love how Eminem’s profile says “I am not Eminem. I am not Eminem. I am not Eminem.” What a follower for you to have! Be careful with that cookie butter… I bought the Trader Joe’s version and almost finished off the whole jar in 2 days using nothing but a knife… ;)

musingmarDecember 1, 2012 - 10:49 pm

Fun post … I like all snippets you shared! Congrats on winning the book from Barb’s Profiteroles and Ponytails blog, even though you beat me!

Isnt it nice when some celebrity follows you, whether its really him or his staff. I remember I had the similar situation last week when Jamie Oliver contacted me (not) it was is marketing arm to promote some seafood products

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenDecember 3, 2012 - 7:48 am

Yeh.. don’t think it’s Eminem.. somehow I don’t think my poems are to his tastes:D

KristyDecember 3, 2012 - 9:12 am

That is hilarious that Eminem popped up on your instagram! Too funny! I would have to put down any book that got me on a house cleaning kick – I do enough of that as it is. ;) And your oil painting is phenomenal. You are an amazingly talented woman Smidge!

The HookDecember 3, 2012 - 12:17 pm

This one was a little different… I loved it!

glutenfreezenDecember 3, 2012 - 1:23 pm

As you can see, I’m behind too! But found a little time today to catch up and so happy I did. Your tree is BEAUTIFUL! I’m going to put the Dovekeepers on my reading list, I must have missed the Biscoff revolution…what’s in it? Eminem – hilarious!! Love Ina (now), although when I first started watching her I thought she was a snob and her constant references to “Jeffrey” drove me nuts…LOL I whole heartedly agree with you on the salad thing and your orzo salad looks divine!

Hugs and kisses ~ April

Your sketch is just gorgeous! You are one talented woman Smidge. :) And I never really thought about being an understudy – but it sure is fitting. Fabulous muffins too.

niasunsetJanuary 17, 2012 - 7:49 am

I loved. You are amazing and creative lady. Your post always impresses me… Beautiful writing, sharing, drawing and photographs, recipe… Thank you, dear Barbara, with my love, nia

Joanne OzugJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:10 am

Orange spice banana? That is such a neat and fresh flavor combination. I was going to make banana bread soon because I have some overripe bananas, and now it’s going to have an orange spice twist! Thanks!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:19 am

Thanks, Kristy, I love to paint but sometimes it’s better to keep it simple:) and use a small sketchbook! I have a large canvas waiting… but it’s a bit overwhelming every time I look at it!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:20 am

It was actually an excellent flavor combination, Caroline really has some of the best baking ever!!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:20 am

You are so creative as well, nia… thanks so much! xoxo Smidge

spreeJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:21 am

You set the mood, like you set the table, Smidge, with such thorough and thoughtful care. This is one exquisite and delicious post, in every sense of the word(s). I want to stay right here…

LauraJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:24 am

Oh, this sounds so good! And looks good, too. Really, your work is a feast for the eyes and… in all ways.

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:26 am

Thank you, Spree… If you were here, there’d be a second cup and muffin on that table:) xo Smidge

sallybrJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:27 am

I guess I am going to be your understudy in food blog writing!

Awesome post, beautiful, touching, just perfect!

(the muffins are great too… ;-)

Chica AndaluzaJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:28 am

The sentiments in this post are lovely – perfectly put and I know that you have lots of understudies out here reading your posts!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:29 am

Thank you so much, this recipe was definitely a “keeper”! xo Smidge

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:29 am

That’s sweet, Sally, but I think, no, I know that we understudy each other;)

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:30 am

Thanks so much… I am so pleased to be a follower of yours!

ChgoJohnJanuary 17, 2012 - 8:51 am

What a delightful post, Smidge! I was literally smiling from start to finish, just as I do whenever I visit you here. Witty, thoughtful, beautifully illustrated. Yes, a real delight!

My Life After Kids (Kathi)January 17, 2012 - 9:10 am

I have just bookmarked yet another of your posts. I can’t keep up with your fabulous recipe suggestions! Loved the poem, too. Coincidentally, the ladies and I were just talking about being “under-studies” at our retreat!

susielindauJanuary 17, 2012 - 9:17 am

I bet that your house is perfectly staged! You could do a book on that alone~

Gretchen O'DonnellJanuary 17, 2012 - 9:23 am

These look fantastic! And your photos are always so mouth-watering. I also love your write-up…and the understudy idea. It’s kind of scary, thinking about our kids watching us so much…uff da.

Rufus' Food and Spirits GuideJanuary 17, 2012 - 9:25 am

You posts are always so inviting. I can just smell these.

thekalechroniclesJanuary 17, 2012 - 9:41 am

Hey, look at you! I see a beautiful food sketch in that sketchbook. Blow it up and add it to the blog (or just scan it).

bitsandbreadcrumbsJanuary 17, 2012 - 9:45 am

What a lovely thought….we are all understudies in life, learning a new part. Love your sketchbook, photos and writing…truly you are gifted!

ceciliagJanuary 17, 2012 - 11:07 am

These sound sublime and the composition of the image you gave us is so beautiful.Tthere is always something so peaceful, yet elegant and so eloquent about your photgraphs! Lovely lovely. c

CarolineJanuary 17, 2012 - 12:03 pm

spicegirlflaJanuary 17, 2012 - 12:12 pm

You are so truly creative in every way! What a lovely way to spend a quiet afternoon, a cup of tea, a sketchbook and your muffins!! Beautiful Smidge!

hotlyspicedJanuary 17, 2012 - 12:59 pm

Lovely words Smidge. I agree with you. I feel like I’m always in the understudy role too. I haven’t been to that website so I’m off to check it out now.

Just Add AttitudeJanuary 17, 2012 - 1:16 pm

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 3:56 pm

And your comments always leave me smiling as well:) Thanks so much!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 3:57 pm

Well, they can be enjoyed by just looking, too! Isn’t that a neat coincidence? I hope you enjoyed your retreat:) xo Barb

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 3:58 pm

I do enjoy “staging” my home, but at the moment, it looks like a disaster around here:)

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 3:59 pm

Hahaha, yeah, it’s the old adage, “be careful what you do, little eyes are watching you!” (not sure if that’s old, but it rhymed and sounded like it, lol)

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 3:59 pm

Yes.. the kitchen did smell heavenly, if only I could have these baking every morning… before I got out of bed!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 4:00 pm

Thanks, Sharyn :) I must be a bit timid, liked that it was just tucked in the corner.. as I begin doing more I promise to share:) I love your paintings, btw!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 4:00 pm

Thank goodness we are.. I get to visit your blog and feel inspired:) xo Smidge

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 4:01 pm

Coming from a wonderful photographer like you, this is a true compliment! Thank you, c!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 4:01 pm

If only I had hours in a day to sit and sketch and bake.. how happy would a life like that be?? Thanks for your compliments, Caroline!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 4:02 pm

It is a great way to spend the afternoon… especially when it’s so darn cold here. It takes so much effort to bundle up to go out!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 4:03 pm

You will really enjoy her recipes.. I love the barbecue chicken pizza she made today:) I’m still drooling…

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 4:04 pm

It was fun to draw because it was so tiny… workin’ my way up to the big canvas loitering in my study… egad! What was I thinking buying that thing?! Thanks for your lovely words…so kind!

Just A SmidgenJanuary 17, 2012 - 4:05 pm

I try to blend the two… without being artificial. I’m beginning to think that the actual recipe just lends itself to something. Maybe it all muddles in my head until the perfect combination comes together:) Thanks so much! xoxo Smidge

Eva kitcheninspirations.wordpress.comJanuary 17, 2012 - 4:28 pm

Love the illustration and the photos, really nice! And I have to say, what a cute puppy!!! The muffin recipe sounds very tasty and I really like it that they are not overly sweet. Great combo of flavours. I have my very first giveaway on my blog and would love it if you would enter, it’s really easy. http://kitcheninspirations.wordpress.com/2012/01/16/restaurant-review-ici-and-my-very-first-giveaway/

kathryningridJanuary 17, 2012 - 10:02 pm

Another winning post, my dear–all of your earlier commenters today have already said so much that I would say to this one, but as always I thank you for it. As you’re commenting on learning and taking inspiration from others, it’s only appropriate to add that I shall have to buckle down and get sketching again myself, perhaps building up to the larger canvas that I too have waiting for me! Thank you for another great spirit-lifter.
xoxo,
Kathryn

Thanks so much, Eva, I will go have a look in a minute:) I love giveaways! I forgot to say that I added slightly less sugar and it still tasted great (about 1/8th of a cup less)

There are certain pictures I can never take. We turn on the TV and are smothered with cruelty and suffering and I don’t need to add to it. So I just photograph peaceful things. A vase of flowers, a beautiful girl. Sometimes, through a peaceful face, I can bring something important into the world. - Edouard Boubat - Paris,…
