My Queen of Hearts

My Gran captured my Heart You might remember her from her “Remarkable Fudge” recipe. I was truly blessed to have had so much time with her through my formative years. Aside from my parents, my Gran was the person who listened and gave the confidential and heart-felt advice I needed. I realize now what a…

Profiteroles & PonytailsFebruary 12, 2013 - 6:56 am

The ponytails would love this craft Smidge. I’ll have to get the Martha Stewart heart press. I have a platter that belonged to my grandmother and I treasure it. I try to use it on Mother’s Day every year . . . but having an item of hers where I could see it everyday — like your beautiful silver tea pot — is a great idea. Grandparents are such people in our lives, aren’t they? I still miss my gran too.

Sibella at bakingwithsibella.comFebruary 12, 2013 - 7:09 am

So beautiful Barb! I love your new blog heading! Sending you lots of love from IN! <3

sallybrFebruary 12, 2013 - 7:25 am

Your new blog heading is pure beauty, in fact I had it open when we started having our coffee this morning and Phil was blown away by it!

I’ve been in one of those extra frantic phases, and my blog commenting is suffering… but I am here! ;-)

spreeFebruary 12, 2013 - 7:26 am

Oh Smidge that looks so pretty! Not only the craft but the entirety of the display! How fitting that those lovely heart-wings would sit nestled beside the treasures from your Gran. (And how wonderful to see it out, where you can love it every day!) Seems that note inside the silver teapot is a Valentine from a Grandma (and friend!) who must have thought the world of you! All of this, so very pretty! xox

Norma ChangFebruary 12, 2013 - 7:46 am

How beautiful and touching post, so wished I knew my grandmas. Bet you grandma would be so pleased to see the silvery china teapot, cream and sugar set on display among your heart creation.

Pride in Photos PhotographyFebruary 12, 2013 - 8:00 am

This is just totally precious along with your story!!

thecompletecookbookFebruary 12, 2013 - 8:30 am

Fabulous! Just too gorgeous for words.

The Healthy FlavorFebruary 12, 2013 - 8:39 am

I love it!! Such a cute idea! It would be fun for kids too. I’ve never heard of a heart press before. What a great idea!

saffronandhoneyFebruary 12, 2013 - 8:44 am

This is wonderful and so heartfelt, makes me miss my gran very much!

Chica AndaluzaFebruary 12, 2013 - 8:57 am

A beautiful project – very lovely! And I loved this post as it reminded me so much of my very own lovely grandmother who I was lucky enough to have in my life until about 4 years ago. She did the very same thing and I have a very beautiful (to me at least) little chinese vase with a note in it from her. Happy memories!

Food,Photography & FranceFebruary 12, 2013 - 9:03 am

Very pretty indeed. I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that I would run out of patience early and the little butterfly hearts would be flying all over the room as I chucked everything in the air ;-)

BrittanyFebruary 12, 2013 - 9:39 am

This really is so cute. I would use it year round! You can never have too many hearts around the house!

Eva TaylorFebruary 12, 2013 - 10:07 am

What a lovely sentiment. Sadly I didn’t know my grandmothers all too well as they lived in Budapest all their lives; only met my Dad’s mum once and my Mum’s mum about 5-6 times. Both died before I became an adult. But my Mom was that person to me, and I miss here every day.
This is a cool craft, I love the colors you’ve chosen. I have several pieces inherited from my family in Hungary and cherish them too. And I have them on display, I can’t seem to be able to tuck them away, no matter how they look with my decor.

pjb1943February 12, 2013 - 10:59 am

Wonderful story about the teapot, Barb.
Paul

divaofdeliciousFebruary 12, 2013 - 11:59 am

Your grandmother sounds like a true sweetheart! I had one of those too. Such a befitting and lovely display. The new heading is so pretty too. Do you know what kind of roses those are?…as stunning variety.

hotlyspicedFebruary 12, 2013 - 1:13 pm

It’s really not fair that by the time we’re old enough to realise what treasures our grandparents are, it’s their time to leave us. How lovely to have her note inside that teapot and yes, these beautiful items should not not be stored away but be on display xx

susielindauFebruary 12, 2013 - 2:37 pm

I LOVE your new header and the artwork is fantastic. I am also copying your arrangement over your fireplace. More! More!

vivekaFebruary 12, 2013 - 3:19 pm

You know, I’m not a Valentine person – but this I just adore – how pretty .. and romantic. Stunning header … too – and the wording so … you!

vivekaFebruary 12, 2013 - 3:20 pm

Barbara, what has happen to your beautiful logo??? You’re not orange. Please, bring it back. *smile

glutenfreezenFebruary 12, 2013 - 3:58 pm

I love it, what a neat and pretty craft idea! Aren’t we blessed to have had such fantastic grandmas? :)

ChgoJohnFebruary 12, 2013 - 4:02 pm

How wonderful to have not just your Gran’s teapot but the note inside it, as well! I’m sure that tea set is among your most cherished possessions and I’m glad you decided to put them on display. I’m equally sure that they bring a smile to your face whenever they catch your eye. How could they not?
And what can I say about your Heart Project that I haven’t already said? It’s a beautiful piece, Barb, and looks right at home, nestled among your Gran’s tea set.

bitsandbreadcrumbsFebruary 12, 2013 - 4:25 pm

Lovely teapot, lovely memories, lovely craft hearts…and a lovely header, too. You’re so right, we need to take cherished possessions out of their safe places and use them so that we can enjoy them and the memories they evoke. Thanks for sharing yours. :)

Danny @ 1227 FosterFebruary 12, 2013 - 8:17 pm

What a great story – I’m a little choked up reading it! :) And I love how you created this simple, yet elegant piece of artwork! Again, everything is so beautiful!

RuthFebruary 12, 2013 - 8:26 pm

Oh, Smidge, how lovely! I think you have made a beautiful display full of love. How perfect for Valentine’s Day. Love is more than just romance!

Claire @ Claire K CreationsFebruary 12, 2013 - 9:24 pm

What a lovely lovely idea. I agree too, beautiful items should be out on display and not kept hidden away in ‘safe’ places out of site. The heart-work (hehe) is beautiful!

Emilie@TheClecerCarrotFebruary 13, 2013 - 5:50 am

What a sweet post Smidge. It really struck a chord with me as I too had a very special relationship with my grandmother. We always cooked together and I admired her china and kitchen antiques from a very young age. When she passed, she gave me her gorgeous hutch filled with everything! I now use these collectibles in my posts as props. It’s my little way of saying hello :) xx

KristyFebruary 13, 2013 - 8:32 am

I have a feeling that there is no other indoor space as peaceful and beautiful as your home Smidge. You have such a magic touch. I love what your Gran did with the notes. That is so special and sweet. What a great way to keep her memory alive.

jamaFebruary 13, 2013 - 8:57 am

Loved this post . . . beautiful story about your grandmother, and that teapot is so lovely (and unusual). Thanks for the butterfly hearts craft too :) .

writerwannabe763February 13, 2013 - 9:45 am

What a wonderful idea for your grandma to do….Diane

Purely.. KayFebruary 13, 2013 - 10:34 am

Can I just tell you how much I absolutely LOVE this idea! I love it. It’s so cute, sweet, and it definitely adds to any decor. And you can use any color you want.. if you don’t wan to do the standard pink. I LOVE this.

megtravelingFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:54 am

That is such a sweet story and a beautiful craft too!

The Blissful AdventurerFebruary 13, 2013 - 3:09 pm

I was so close to my Mom’s mother and I remain to this day very close to my father’s Mother who is going to be 95 this May. These women did much to teach me and guide my soul. What a beautiful post Barbara and thanks for sharing it

Sue Schlabach 129twigandvineFebruary 13, 2013 - 4:00 pm

Dear Heavens! I want to go fill all the cups and pots with little messages. Even for us to find each time we use them. What a sweet legacy. We still have cups and plates with medical tape on the bottom and a loved ones’ slanted hand saying the name who it was for. Very special, and surprising how long the tape and ink has lasted. Love those fluttering hearts too.

mjskitFebruary 13, 2013 - 5:35 pm

What a very sweet post! I love the part about your Gran putting notes in her keepsake items as to who they go to. What a great idea! I’m sure you will cherish all of the items that had your name in them forever! Love your Queen of Hearts!

JaslineFebruary 13, 2013 - 10:58 pm

Awww these look really sweet and pretty! Will definitely make it when I make some cards for my friends, thank you Barbara! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:30 pm

I think your girls would create so many cool projects with a little press like that:) Your serving platter sounds so beautiful and special for you, I agree, Grandparents are just the best. xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:30 pm

Thanks, Sibella! xo

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:31 pm

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:31 pm

I hadn’t thought of it that way, spree, but it is the best Valentine, isn’t it:) xo

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:32 pm

I knew one Grandma and one Grandpa quite well.. the other two, I wish I had more time with them. xo

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:32 pm

Thank you:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:33 pm

Thank you Mandy, Happy Valentine’s Day! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:33 pm

I think kids would be so much more creative with that little press, don’t you? xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:34 pm

Sending you hugs xoxo

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:35 pm

You have longevity in your genes! How lucky you were to keep her near for such a long time! I love that she did the same thing! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:35 pm

Hahaha.. chucking and stomping them before they “flew away” :D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:35 pm

You’re right.. I’m off to punch a few more just to scatter on the kitchen counter:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:37 pm

You have such a rich history in your family.. places so far away that are your heritage.. It’s a blessing, really, to have an adult who cares for us in this way, friend, grandparent or parent, you are so right, Eva. xoxo

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:37 pm

Thanks, Paul:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:38 pm

I can almost hear her voice when I see her handwriting. These flowers were in a bouquet from a friend on my birthday.. I’ll have to ask the flower shop the next time I pop in, they would know for sure! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:38 pm

That is so true a sentiment.. I’d love just one more day!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:39 pm

Thanks, Susie.. I really love changing my blog. While I love greys and blues, I’m feeling the urge to welcome color into my world.. lots of color everywhere, lol! I’m not sure what’s come over me:) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:40 pm

Valentine for me isn’t the “Hallmark” valentine.. it’s just a quiet remembering loved ones. I’m glad you like the header:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:41 pm

Oh, it is on standby:) I just felt the urge for lots of color lately, bright hues.. I’m not sure why. Maybe the weather, a longing for spring… I’m sure it will come back one day:) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:41 pm

We are indeed!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:42 pm

I can’t believe I left them tucked away for so many years.. and that they made it through so many moves! Thanks, as always for your kind words.. I really had fun making this craft:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:44 pm

I think this is the only one I had tucked away.. except for my play tea set. But that may even come out one day. It’s Snow White tea cups:) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:45 pm

I get pretty sentimental on these sorts of days.. I’m glad you liked it, Danny:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:45 pm

I think Valentine’s isn’t about romance, really, just love.. lots of love for everyone? xo

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:46 pm

Haha, that took me a minute:) Good one, Claire! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:47 pm

Oh, now that is just the sweetest story.. I’d love to see that hutch filled with memories of your Grandmother. I’m sure she is so pleased with your photos and your blog! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:48 pm

That’s so kind of you to say, Kristy. I do get a lot of pleasure “decorating” and moving smaller things about. Sometimes I worry that I’m becoming “knick-knacky” (shudder) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:48 pm

You’re so welcome!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:48 pm

She was a sweetie:) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenFebruary 13, 2013 - 11:49 pm

Now it would be so pretty in other colors.. like blue for a baby boy! xx

Okay…. great news – because I see the old logo so much like you – I don’t see you as orange at all. I see you with ribbons, laces and delicate things.

vivekaFebruary 14, 2013 - 3:39 am

Barbara, I understand that – and I see that you have a very strong romantic streak that you show all the time.

This is a really touching post, Barbara! I love the hearts, too, they’ve turned out beautifully just as they are without the calendar :)

What a precious note. I wish my grandmother’s had done that xox

I agree that it’s so important not to hide our beautiful treasures away. They are meant to be enjoyed, used and cherished in full view. Your Gran sounds like a wonderful, wonderful woman and your heart craft is a lovely tribute to her.

DebbieMarch 21, 2013 - 7:42 pm

Hi Barb, I’m a first time visitor to your blog, and I have to say it’s just beautiful. Thanks so much for your link to my February calendar. I love the way you used just the heart in the frame. What a wonderful idea! I also love the display over your mantle, and what a sweet post. I really appreciate it, being so close to my own grandmother. I still have her with me, she’s a spry 92 year old and although she lives 12 hours away, we keep up regularly with Skype, email, texting and nearly daily phone calls. She’s a one of a kind and I don’t like to think of the day when she won’t be around anymore. I really love the way you’ve remembered her here.

Love those!! So pretty for valentines day!! It’s been awhile since making soap. I need to do this. My mom would love them!

TessaJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:01 am

Adorable little cakes of soap!

annashortcakesJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:02 am

Love your photos. What editing program do you use? I love how you superimpose words, etc on the photos. I am in the market and having trouble choosing.

gfreeglowJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:03 am

Such a sweet idea!

KaristaJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:14 am

I had no idea this is how you make soap! I am completely in love with the scent of rose. I keep rose oil in my closet and spritz my clothes with it. :) And often spritz myself. LOL! Pinning and sharing!! So fun Smidge!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:21 am

Thanks.. They were so fun to make.. I might have to make more:D xx

annashortcakesJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:33 am

Please do! The hubby can get a discount on it as a student but i want to know how it works/if it is any good before I spend the $.

andy1076January 29, 2013 - 8:41 am

These are so cute! :D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 8:46 am

We are offered a discount while we’re in the class. I think it is not “upgradable” though. Since it’s a student version, it is affordable but you can’t get any of the newer version upgrades when they come out. So that makes it a tough decision. It’s pretty advanced, but I think it can do so much more in the end. I’m hoping to draw and scan and then work with my own graphics eventually. I have found Picmonkey a really quick way to do fun stuff for free. They have filters, text, etc. that are quick to learn and use. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Chica AndaluzaJanuary 29, 2013 - 9:17 am

Gorgeous – I want to go and fill my bathtub right now!

{Main St. Cuisine}January 29, 2013 - 10:05 am

How lovely! I can see making little gifts for friends and family with your “recipe.”. Tell me, Smidge are the glycerin cubes found in most larger craft stores or is it easier to purchase online? Unless I’m missing something, this looks fairly easy for a novice crafter. :-)

glutenfreezenJanuary 29, 2013 - 10:16 am

I love them and I sear when I’m looking at the pictures I can smell roses. :) They look relatively simple to make, I think even I could do it!

glutenfreezenJanuary 29, 2013 - 10:17 am

Meant to say “swear” of course. ;)

Donna FrascaJanuary 29, 2013 - 10:28 am

How cute these are!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 12:03 pm

I found them at our “big box” Michael’s store. I just saw Martha made them with a different technique.. And she stamped xo in them.. Too cute! She also said to spray with alcohol to eliminate bubbles. But I wonder if stirring would work just as well..

hotlyspicedJanuary 29, 2013 - 12:14 pm

What a beautiful idea. These are so gorgeous, Smidge and I just love the colour of them. I’ll have to rush out and buy all the ingredients. And these would make wonderful gifts – if you could bare to part with them! xx

Ooh how lovely. I bet your bathroom smelt pretty good after the bath too!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 3:50 pm

I’ll be making a change to the supplies list… roses should be organic, no need to have pesticides joining you in the tub:) Maybe call your florist to find out. If not, try finding edible flowers in a whole food market and let those dry.. pansies would be so pretty.. even a whole one xx

niasunsetJanuary 29, 2013 - 4:47 pm

first of all I should say this, they were so lovely when I saw my e-mail message with little red hearts :) and opened with many of them… and then this beautiful and romantic recipe for a soap… you are amazing. Million Thanks, love, nia

These are just adorable! And PERFECT for valentines day. I have been wanting to try and make soap for ages but my boyfriend keeps telling me it would be too messy. These seem proof in point I could make them.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:27 pm

The great thing is that they can be as light or as strongly scented.. I know some people like a softer fragrance:) xx

ChgoJohnJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:40 pm

Such a beautifully presented post, Barb, expertly photographed and staged.
I have to be honest, though. I doubt if I’ll ever give soap making a try. I’ll stick to pasta and cheese, thank you, but, if ever I change my mind, you’ll be the first to know. Maybe we could try a little bartering. I send you some ravioli for a little soap? It could work. :)

Sue Schlabach 129twigandvineJanuary 30, 2013 - 7:32 am

Sweetness incarnate!! I’ve made some scented soaps with glycerine and lavender. But so lovely with the big petals. Hmmmm, seems I still have some of those supplies somewhere. I wonder where……..

These are so pretty, Smidge! You really did make them look so easy to make. You’ve given me such good Valentine’s ideas. I’d better get acting on some of them! :-)

The HookJanuary 31, 2013 - 8:14 am

Perfect timing for this one, cutie! Well done!

GrannyJanuary 31, 2013 - 5:20 pm

Those look delicious! Oops… there goes the sweet tooth again! These would make a perfect treat for a bit of pampering for a person sans Valentine! Add chocolate (or wine) for a truly decadent celebration of self-love.

What lovely soap’s! Great idea.

KristyJanuary 27, 2013 - 2:45 pm

The strawberries are so simple, yet genius! How absolutely gorgeous!!! I can just imagine the beauty in your house and kitchen for Valentine’s Smidge!

ChgoJohnJanuary 27, 2013 - 3:54 pm

Those sliced strawberries are such a clever idea and look how they beautify your cakes, Barb. They’re really something. And, for my tastes, love that your recipe includes an orange glaze. I really do enjoy citrus-y cakes and an orange glaze is the best. I doubt that these cakes lasted long on your countertop. They certainly wouldn’t on mine.

The Retiring SortJanuary 27, 2013 - 4:39 pm

This sounds yummy, and I love the strawberry hearts! ;-)

musingmarJanuary 27, 2013 - 4:51 pm

I hadn’t seen your video before, Barb, and it was lovely. The music was the perfect accompaniment to the visual recipe and all the flowers. The cake sounds delicious, and the heart-shaped strawberry slices add that special loving touch!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:34 pm

It does look full of love :D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:34 pm

I like that it’s such an easy make-over, it would be pretty on a lemon loaf as well.. xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:35 pm

I’ll trade you for a few brussels sprouts from your garden:D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:36 pm

It sure is, it’s a remix by another artist, Eva Cassidy.. she had a beautiful voice…

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:37 pm

I’m not too big on decorating my house with Valentine’s themed stuff, but it’s fun to be inspired seasonally for baking. I miss the days when my kids would bring crafts home to decorate our kitchen:D xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:37 pm

Well.. we’re all on a healthy kick, so these went to my friends where I volunteer on Fridays.. I did pinch a little slice, though, all in the name of quality control:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:38 pm

They’re so cute, aren’t they? :D

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:38 pm

Claire @ Claire K CreationsJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:55 pm

Just beautiful Barbara and I love the video!

petit4chocolatierJanuary 27, 2013 - 6:20 pm

I wish there was a love button. I have never eaten pound cake with orange juice. Sounds and looks delicious!

musingmarJanuary 27, 2013 - 6:25 pm

It’s crazy here – highs have been way below zero for about a week, and then on Tuesday they’re calling for a high of 12! It’s supposed to be raining here before dawn (following snow and freezing rain). Certainly not winter as we know it! I think a slice of your cake, a warm blanket and a good book on the couch will be just the ticket!

spicegirlflaJanuary 27, 2013 - 6:54 pm

This is sooo pretty! It seems that Valentine’s Day and strawberries are the perfect match!

bitsandbreadcrumbsJanuary 27, 2013 - 8:43 pm

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 27, 2013 - 10:14 pm

hotlyspicedJanuary 28, 2013 - 3:58 am

Great video, Smidge and I love the dog licking the spatula. What a cutie she is. And that’s a great cake too xx

Eva TaylorJanuary 28, 2013 - 7:02 am

I love the look of the baked strawberries, so pretty on the cake. And I bet the baking would also concentrate the sugars so they don’t taste like water like they usually do this time of year.

vivekaJanuary 28, 2013 - 11:59 am

Frist of all … I would love to say that I love your little logo – forgotten during my last visit. What an hearty cake- can see how moist it’s – but why icing???? Use to do a lemon cake with the same principle with the syrup. It was my favorite for years, don’t have clue what made me stop baking it – probably happen when I moved abroad. I will make this one – during this weekend, but no icing on my cake.

Coleen PatrickJanuary 28, 2013 - 1:38 pm

Strawberries, cream and cake–so angelic-ly yummy!

gourmetgetawayJanuary 28, 2013 - 3:04 pm

I love your site and your beautiful images, this cake looks so gorgeous too. I will bookmark it for Valentines Day :)

Ashley @thedrivencookJanuary 28, 2013 - 3:57 pm

Adorable cake- love the strawberries on top!

Norma ChangJanuary 28, 2013 - 4:36 pm

Your are one talented lady!!!!! Well done video, thoroughly enjoyed watching it and listening to the music. Lovely cake.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 28, 2013 - 8:42 pm

It certainly doesn’t need the icing.. This is a Barefoot Contessa addition, I agree with you, the less icing the better.. But I did love the whipped cream and jammy sauce;D

kateshrewsdayJanuary 29, 2013 - 12:26 am

Gorgeous idea/ I love the strawberries!

vivekaJanuary 29, 2013 - 2:51 am

I will do the jammy sauce .. because I will have strawberries leftover anyhow. The thing is the strawberries don’t taste much over here just now and cost … mucho.

Looking forward to make the cake.

Geni - Sweet and CrumbyJanuary 29, 2013 - 11:57 am

Oh my, oh my. Total perfection Barb. Lovely, yummy and definitely valentine-y.

Hahaha.. they were yummy:D Thanks Courtney!

wendy@chezchloeJanuary 30, 2013 - 6:44 pm

The strawberry hearts are new to me and will be repeated in my kitchen. And I love this simple pound cake with oranges. I’d go for the orange syrup and orange glaze plus the whipped cream of course.
Sweet video- I did miss that last year. They are so fun to make – The couple I did took me hours and I was so completely enthralled with the process I had little need for response. Totally self satisfied :-) cheers ma dear… xo wendy

sweetlabFebruary 4, 2013 - 6:10 am

Those strawberry hearts are such a clever idea! I love pound cake and I loooooove strawberries, so I’m sure that I will fall head over heels for this one. The addition of jam and whip-cream elevates it to a whole other level! :)

Where do you find all the lovely boxes .. and laces .. for your photos. It’s such a joy to land here. Have to read the interview now. Thanks for being my online – sweetie shop.

bitsandbreadcrumbsJanuary 24, 2013 - 8:24 am

I saw and then read your interview on WP, congrats on that! Such a beautiful and quiet post. I just felt like I walked into a lovely space, almost like a favorite store, looked around at all the beautiful things, admired the gorgeous flower arrangements, got some ideas and was treated to these adorable and oh so pretty treats. I didn’t think I’d ever call a rice crispy treat lovely, but these surely are! Smidge if you ever opened a store no one would ever leave it…and I’ll bet no one wants to leave your house when they visit, either! :)

spreeJanuary 24, 2013 - 8:34 am

Absolutely EXQUISITE! What you do with the ordinary, through high magic and Smidgery transforms the commonplace into something otherworldly! I think you’re part faerie I truly do!! I love your storage unit, Barb, and the interplay of whites and soft pastels … you make being organized look so pretty and inspiring! Speaking of which, you’ve transformed the humble Rice Krispie square into a lovely treat. Who wouldn’t want to receive one of these for Valentine’s Day?

vivekaJanuary 24, 2013 - 9:24 am

What a fun craft room with just about everything you would ever need to be creative. Tis the season for cleaning and organizing and that is really big here in China in prep for the Chinese New years. Beautiful and delicate little rice krispy treats. Who knew something so simple could be so fun and delicious. Have a super day! BAM

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 24, 2013 - 4:59 pm

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 24, 2013 - 4:59 pm

A working space is different from storage, so I wouldn’t show my desk without a lot of cleaning up first:) xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 24, 2013 - 5:00 pm

Thanks CCU.. You’ve got a nice way of describing it:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 24, 2013 - 5:00 pm

If I can’t make it pretty, well, I don’t organize.. that’s half the fun for me:) I just sent the last of the batch over to my son’s friend’s house.. he’d seen them on Facebook, lol!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 24, 2013 - 6:44 pm

I was happy with how they turned out.. I think the secret was using “crafting” baking chocolate, not the expensive Callebaut. They melted much easier and poured better.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 24, 2013 - 6:44 pm

Thanks so much.. I enjoy changing my blog, sometimes too much and no one recognizes it, lol!

Smidge! When I first saw that craft cabinet on Pinterest, I thought it was from a magazine!!! It’s gorgeous :) I love how you styled it, coordinating all of the colors. What a happy place to be. And your Rice Krispie hearts are adorable. I happen to have a little packet of pink chocolate in my baking cabinet that I need to use up :) xx

saffronandhoneyJanuary 25, 2013 - 6:11 am

I envy you your organization, as ever, Smidge, and those hearts are precious!

Sibella at bakingwithsibella.comJanuary 25, 2013 - 7:10 am

A post full of loveliness! Every visit to your blog is so inspiring! Thanks for being here Barb! <3 I love to knit, how can I join Interpurl Knitwork?

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 25, 2013 - 8:29 am

If you click on my link I think you could just make a comment.. but somewhere there it tells you where to send your small square of knitting. I have to buy needles and wool today, you knit a small square and mail it in with your name, etc, on it:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 25, 2013 - 8:30 am

I hope you try these.. they’re so worth it because they’re not difficult:) xx

ChgoJohnJanuary 25, 2013 - 9:20 am

What great news! Congratulations, Barb! Your storage are looks so nice and organized. If you like doing this kind of thing, do I ever have a place for you!!! :)
Rice Krispie treats are a bit too sweet for my tastes but that’s a good thing. They are one confection that I can make and give away without stealing some before packing them up. It’s the sampling that gets me into trouble. Let it get out of hand and the baker’s dozen of cookies gift is suddenly 11.
This was another well-written, beautifully shot and presented, Barb. A pleasure to read.

Bam's KitchenJanuary 25, 2013 - 5:51 pm

Purging and cleaning is therapeutic and after 8 years is required!
I was excited about the move, however I have encountered a bug in my new theme and it would require about 60 hours of re-configuration on my part to go live. I am on a hold pattern until I hear back some options from Theme Forest. So I will be at least a mid February go live. How about you?

petit4chocolatierJanuary 25, 2013 - 8:58 pm

Beautiful post! I love your craft cabinet. Elegantly done. Your rice krispie treats look heavenly!

TandyJanuary 25, 2013 - 9:47 pm

I love your craft room and I will look closely at the design of shelves and drawers when we get to finishing our study :)

Three Well BeingsJanuary 26, 2013 - 12:20 am

These RIce Krispie treats are a cut above any I’ve ever seen before! They’re works of art! I love your organization system and of course, it’s beautiful, too! You have a way of making everything just a little special, Barbara. Including your beautiful fonts. I’m eager to read the interview, too! :-)

BluejellybeansJanuary 26, 2013 - 12:41 pm

Hi Smidge! Congratulations for your interview. Your blog is an endless source of inspiration, so it was time already that WP give you credit for it ;)
I loved the recipe, and I’m borrowing it for San Valentine’s I don’t know if my husband is going to like it, but I know I will!!
Have a nice day :)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:04 pm

Heehee.. it’s a little storage closet/room, but it works:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:04 pm

Thanks!!xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:05 pm

It is such a treat to visit each other’s “homes” and see what they’ve been up to.. baking away or otherwise:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:05 pm

Haha, you’re too cute, if you lived close I’d give you a little lesson.. it’s not as hard as it looks:)xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:06 pm

Whew.. I’ve just finished up the last job, filing, ugh! But now I’m free, so if I’m ever in your area.. xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:06 pm

*blush* I wish I could sell more.. then I can buy more cookie cutters and cake pans:D xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:08 pm

It’s not the shelving unit, it’s the paper, buttons and fabric that make it look pretty:) You could fill each one with yarn in chromatic families and it would be stunning!! Btw.. I’m so excited, I have one ball of thick fluffy yarn.. two thick knitting needles. I can now cast (caste?) on, knit and purl. Tomorrow I’m trying a cable stitch.. when I’m done it will be a scarf:D I can’t thank you enough for sending me the DVD, it was just the impetus I needed to be brave!!! xxx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:09 pm

The more crafts I do the more I want to make, they’re kind of addicting:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:10 pm

Martha Stewart, eh?? That’s the highest compliment:) Thanks! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:10 pm

xoxo to you too:)

They were so cute with the sticks.. if only my kids were still in grade school! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:12 pm

Thanks so much, Jasline.. Valentine’s is a fun time!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:13 pm

I can’t wait to head over to see what you’ve been up to!! Thanks so much! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:13 pm

It was a craze.. and I’m finally organized in every storage room. It wasn’t a New Year’s Resolution, so I’m not sure what came over me, lol!

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:15 pm

I have a strange obsession with organization.. I think it ties into my stationery obsession.. baskets, trays.. you name it, I’ve got it. In fact, it’s time to get rid of some of the older baskets. So.. if you’d lived closer I’d be glad to help:D I hear you on the baker’s 11… I have a sugar obsession as well, as if you didn’t know! xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:16 pm

Thanks so much:D xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:16 pm

The combination of drawers and shelving is quite handy, not everything is attractive enough to keep out in the open. xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:16 pm

Thanks so much, it was a much more pleasant week for sure:D xx

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 26, 2013 - 5:17 pm

Likewise.. I love visiting your blog and seeing your recipes, they’re so often dishes I’ve never tried Giovanna!!

Danny @ 1227 FosterJanuary 26, 2013 - 7:55 pm

You are too too kind!!!!! But thank you :)

wendy@chezchloeJanuary 26, 2013 - 9:36 pm

I have a new room in our house for my office/studio. I love it’s functionality but would love to make it prettier. Your shelves are serving a purpose and are pleasing to the eye- this is my goal. Thank you for the visual.
The rice krispy treats on a stick are also quite pleasing to the eye, taking the rough cut square up several notches… :-)
xx wendy

vbholmesJanuary 27, 2013 - 5:44 am

You’ve taken an ordinary after-school treat and elevated it to an art object–well done, Smidge. And congratulations on the interview–interesting.

gastrogardenerJanuary 27, 2013 - 2:18 pm

So organized! Love krispy treats. You have a knack of elevating the familiar to fabulous!

{Main St. Cuisine}January 28, 2013 - 8:43 am

This is such a pretty post, Smidge. And, a very nice way to get back into the groove of reading some of my most favorite blogs. I too need to do some editing and organizing. Thanks for the inspiration in that department (I definitely need it!). I hope you are well and your new year is off to a great start (& congratulations on your interview too)!

Yes, I love that idea, Barb. I can do the same with all this fabric too, and it will look amazing in my little studio. Thank you!

Yay!!! It’s so exciting that you are ready to cast on. I simply can’t wait to see what you create. I know it will be beautiful. This is fun to see you take this on, you’re a natural for knitting with your patience and eye for style. Did I mention, YAY!!??

I LOVE your storage craft area. I, like you, do tons of crafts, sewing, painting, etc. and have been wanting a craft, sewing, painting room FOREVER! Your crispy treats are adorable and your new website design and header is sooo beautiful. Your blog is one of my favorites, I truly enjoy it :)

a dream of a post… I woke up feeling nostalgic and sad for absolutely no reason. Not even exercising did the trick today, but somehow your beautiful poem brought me a nice smile and a warm feeling.

so I must absolutely must send you a virtual hug. Right now! ;-)

What a lovely way to banish a challenging week. I love the way you added to white chocolate latte – so sweet looking and clever. Love the photos!

musingmarJanuary 19, 2013 - 10:15 am

These are beautiful, Barb. I’ve been wanting to try my hand at marshmallow making for ages; not sure what I’m waiting for. I’m feeling out of sorts today, so maybe I need to find solace in the act of creating something pretty and tasty. I’m a great believer in kitchen therapy.

Robyn LeeJanuary 19, 2013 - 10:22 am

I love this post Barbara. Marshmallow and me have a special bond ~ I have never made my own but this is inspiring me to try. I also love your music selection here…stunning all around ~ sending much love and encouragement. xxoo RL

Korena in the KitchenJanuary 19, 2013 - 11:55 am

What a lovely post – the marshmallows, the pictures, the words, everything. I’ve made marshmallows once before and this reminds me that I need to make them again – I like the sound of chocolate-coconut covered marshmallows especially!

Norma ChangJanuary 19, 2013 - 11:59 am

Sounds like we had the same kind of week, I am in good company. Perfect marshmallow hearts and beautiful photos as usual,

Barb, they’re a work of art! I’m sure they taste delicious, but you’ve made them a feast for the eyes! I hope everything is ok, dearheart, I’ve been thinking about you.. xx

Three Well BeingsJanuary 19, 2013 - 1:49 pm

“A reset for inner peace.” Boy do I like that! I really do believe we need to look for the small, quiet joys. Life can sometimes just suck the air out of us, but we can restore and refresh, often with just a little distance and a different focus. You’ve expressed that so very beautifully, Barb! And I just love these marshmallow hearts. How precious they would be as little Valentine’s gifts. You have inspired me today in more ways than one! oxo

Mad DogJanuary 19, 2013 - 2:29 pm

petit4chocolatierJanuary 19, 2013 - 6:49 pm

ChgoJohnJanuary 19, 2013 - 9:44 pm

This is such a beautiful post, Barb. Love how you turn to creating things of beauty to offset some of Life’s less appealing aspects. Your photography, too, is exceptionally fine here.
I’ve never attempted to make marshmallows, not knowing what I’d do with them once I made them. Maybe I shouldn’t be so practical. To paraphrase a Kostner film, “If I make them, they will come.” I better clean the house first.

Food,Photography & FranceJanuary 20, 2013 - 1:50 am

Very beautiful confections. I can only admire from afar as I just don’t have the patience to something like that myself.

I am completely in awe of your creations…they are so beautiful. While I am not so inclined or talented I am able to enjoy seeing what you create….Diane

yummychunkletJanuary 20, 2013 - 12:41 pm

Your marshmallows look wonderfully delicate and delicious.

SarahJanuary 20, 2013 - 1:11 pm

Me too. I’ve been hiding with fabric and yarn this week, creating….and hoping for a reset. I love the way you put it :) You have such a way with words that I could never hope to have. I hope it worked for you, Smidge. You deserve nothing but the best. Here’s to a new week, with new possibilities….and beautiful marshmallows! Good for you in mastering that technique, they look so good. I’m lost in the photos….

glutenfreezenJanuary 20, 2013 - 1:44 pm

Loved listening the music while I looked at your beautiful photos! I’ve been wanting to make homemade marshmallows for a long time now. You made it sound and look so easy and rewarding! I will definitely have to add it to my list. Have a lovely Sunday. ~ April :)

Barbara … this so so pretty and sweet … that box is adorable. I must have landed in a pink heaven.

Ashley LarkinJanuary 21, 2013 - 7:43 am

Creating is such a brave act — to proclaim light in darkness. That is what you do here, Smidge. Create beauty. Encourage hearts. These marshmallows are so lovely, and all your ideas for presenting them are incredibly sweet and thoughtful. I pray you received the reset you needed.

KristyJanuary 21, 2013 - 1:44 pm

I’ve never even thought to make marshmallows. What a genius idea. I’m going to make these for the kids for Valentine’s Day. It will be quite the treat. And what a gorgeous way to present them in those vintage boxes Smidge. I hope this week is a better one. :)

Ashley @thedrivencookJanuary 21, 2013 - 6:16 pm

Beautiful…especially in the antique chocolate box. That is a real treasure.

Geni - Sweet and CrumbyJanuary 22, 2013 - 2:57 pm

Oh. my. goodness. Everything about this post is just gorgeous. The marshmallows are so fluffy and ethereal looking and those boxes are simply charming. I totally agree that immersing myself in something wonderful (cooking!) takes me away from the negative and helps me to be more at peace. Glad you know what works for your Barb.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 22, 2013 - 4:56 pm

I couldn’t believe my luck finding them in such a small town in a little out of the way antique store. I almost hesitated and then bought both.. they remind me of my mom:) xx

KarenJanuary 22, 2013 - 5:02 pm

No question…I would have grabbed them up in a second…I have some wonderful antique candy advertisements from magazines that I hung in the candy store that I used to own. Things like that are irreplaceable.

Bam's KitchenJanuary 23, 2013 - 4:50 am

So light and fluffy I bet the just melt in your mouth. Have you actually ever read the back of a marshmallow bag for the list of ingredients? Can you pronounce any of those things? I could sound out all of your ingredients so that is a plus.

trixfred30January 23, 2013 - 12:36 pm

I made marshmallow once, for some teacakes. It was okay but a bit ‘soggy’ for my liking. But the recipe never said anything about gelatin – which is probably what was missing.

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 23, 2013 - 10:11 pm

Oh, dear.. yes, gelatin is the “glue”:)

Barbara Bamber | justasmidgenJanuary 23, 2013 - 10:15 pm

Oh, my gosh.. I haven’t, I’m going to take a look. I’ve eaten them since I was small, so I guess it’s too late for me;) xx
