I’m not sure when I began to think I wasn’t enough.
Not pretty enough, funny enough, smart enough, talented enough, desirable enough.
For me it began in junior high, right around that critical age where self-image is unformed,
tender even,
and vulnerable to hurtful remarks and comments.
♥
I decided that I wanted to be just like Cheryl Tiegs, the Cover Girl.
You can imagine my frustration when no matter how I styled my hair, the clothes I wore, the makeup I tried,
When I looked in the mirror, I just never looked like her.
Imagine that.
There was a long line up of movie stars after Cindy.
I cut my hair short to look like Olivia Newton John,
then grew it out again to look like Farrah Fawcett, sausage roll curls and all.
♥
But guess who I kept on seeing in the mirror?
Barbara Barry
The magical thing about getting older.. is that the person you see when you look in the mirror
doesn’t have to be a famous musician, actress, writer or a even a 20 or 30 year old.
It’s just you
and that’s enough.
It’s enough to be a mother of two..
an amateur writer and blogger, photographer, inexpert at cello, inflexible at yoga, and careless at housekeeping.
It’s ok to be slower in spin class than the rest, it’s the laughter at coffee afterwards that I love.
♥
You see, it’s about family and friends for me
and just doing the things that I do every day.. that makes me content when I look in that mirror.
And I need to say, I feel so blessed to have my health.
It’s a joy to be around people who love me and appreciate me for who I am,
who appreciate what I do to make our home beautiful, warm and welcoming.
I love the conversations I have with my kids about their lives and who they see in the mirror every day!
I’m so happy to be me
..and thank goodness I’m not Cheryl Tiegs!
And.. thank goodness you are YOU!!

Vegan + Raw Mint Cacao Chip Smoothie
This Mint Cacao Chip Smoothie is Cindy Crawford’s.
{ Fyi, I never wanted to be her, it’s that whole blonde vs brunette, Betty or Veronica thing. }
Apparently she “continues to defy age with her stunning good looks. At 48, how does she do it? One important factor is a healthy diet!” I think there might be a teeny little botox in there somewhere 😉
- 1 ripe frozen banana
- 1 cup fresh baby spinach leaves
- 10 mint leaves, stems removed
- 1 tbsp cacao nibs
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- optional: vanilla
- stevia to sweeten
- 1 cup almond milk, plus more if too thick
- Put all ingredients in order in a magic bullet cup or blender. If using a blender, this recipe can be doubled. I didn't have a frozen banana (easy to do, peel, cut into chunks and pop in a ziploc into your freezer) so I added a ripe banana and a few ice cubes. Blend until everything is mixed. The cacao nibs won't be completely crushed and add a nice crunch to your smoothie.
I say “thank goodness you’re ‘YOU’ too” …. Diane
😀
I am so loving this post and you for writing it. Thank you.
I just made a batch of almond milk and I just received by mail- cocoa nibs, raw cocoa powder and butter. I have the idea of making raw chocolate but until that happens I think I’ll try this smoothie.
Have a lovely rest of your week. x wendy
Raw chocolate.. I hope you try that Wendy, I’d love to have that recipe:) xx
I love this post Barbara – it is heartwarming to learn from others how similar we all are, though miles apart… our little doubts and niggles, but at the end of the day we are content with and appreciative of what we have. Thanks for writing this! And have a great week! xx
It is a common theme.. especially amongst woman isn’t it? I feel for the young women with social media pressuring them to be perfect. I hope you have a great week too! xx
I understand this post all too well….I struggled for years comparing myself to others, and honestly, I still don’t have my whole act together. But I have come a long way and am grateful for all that God has blessed me with. The smoothie look and sounds yummy as well!
Such a beautiful post Smidge and a reminder to me, to be kinder to myself, thank you!
Have a beautiful day.
🙂 Mandy xo
Oh, please do.. you’re so beautiful to all of us readers:)
So true Barbara! First in the teen years it hits and then again in peri-menopause. We’re so hard on ourselves. I’m happy you’re YOU and not Cheryl Tiegs too! 🙂 And what a delicious looking smoothie!
~ April
Now, isn’t that the truth.. I wonder if we’re done after peri-menopause?? I sure hope so!!
I too am glad you are YOU, gorgeous you!
And so nice to have you here Norma:D
AMEN to this entire post, such a beautiful way to start my day! We all go through that stage, and sometimes the ugly beast rears its head in my life, but I shush it up with cookies or cake. This smoothie looks perfect!
Haha, I love that idea.. I will shush my ugly beast with cookies and cake as well.. that’s a great idea, Brittany:)
We are often too harsh my friend, this was a lovely post and it made me smile 🙂
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
Thanks CCU:)
I was always so critical of myself, never satisfied with who I was or how I looked until my forties! It’s funny how that changes. I had Farrah hair too! Just glad we have better taste now!
Frozen bananas totally rock, I bet it makes this snack incredibly creamy. You might be interested in this chocolate company (a client from the company I worked at) http://paschachocolate.com they have a totally allergen free chocolate and chocolate products, worth checking out.
Hehee.. good thing we lost the “Farrah” hair, eh? I took a look at that company’s website, my gosh that looks decadent. I’m going to see if our natural whole food store, Blush Lane, carries it.. they have a whole section dedicated to chocolate:) xx
I haven’t had a smoothie in days! Thanks for the timely reminder! This sounds like a awesome mix to start off a day.
YES to being just you! I think we all had our self-doubts and insecurities at one point in our life or maybe even now. Thanks for this lovely post. I can definitely identify with it. =)
I’m so sad to see young women and men fall under that spell.. it’s worse for them today, I think, with all the internet marketing and social networking. xx
Hello Smidge I am so glad you are you and not Cheryl Teigs. Cheryl is beautiful and all that but I am sure she cannot write poetry, cook, design or take as pretty photos as you do. I would love this smoothie. My boys not so much. It is that whole teenage texture thing with green veggies but us adults can enjoy this one. Take Care, BAM
You’re right Bam:) So happy you are you too.. I know, getting a bit corny but I mean it:D Oh my.. your boys won’t like the juices I have coming up. I just saw your salad tonight, heaven!! xx
Haha, this post cracked me up a bit. My husband and I have often debated the validity of a celebrity (like Crawford) touting beauty products when they have had plastic surgery. On another note, this smoothie looks great! I’m a huge chocolate mint fan, so I’ll definitely be trying this! 🙂
Haha, isn’t that true.. totally every single one has had plastic surgery or have had their photos enhanced!
We have the Cheryl Tiegs complex in common. I’m quite sure she must have been the very first young model I most admired and like you, comparing myself, came up lacking! And also like you, my life is full of blessing, and I wouldn’t want to be someone else. I really appreciate the sensitivity of how you’ve shared a part of your personal journey. I think it must be part of the human condition, at least in western society with so much media attention, to go through the growing pains of feeling inadequate, or at least not comfortable in our own packaging. 🙂 It is such freedom when we wake up and realize that we are enough as we are. And I must get some cocoa nibs! I’ve had them in the past but I forget about them and this smoothie really interests me. Delicious, Smidge!
I was thinking a few might recognize Cheryl Tiegs’ name:) There is so much freedom in maturing and discovering the true beauty in the authentic qualities of everyone around us. It took me a bit to get used to cacao nibs but I’m a big fan now.xx
Reading through the comments, you’ve really struck a chord, Barb. I can’t help but worry for today’s youth, constantly bombarded with photo-enhanced images of “the Ideal.” I hope they have parents like yourself to help instill self-esteem within them.
Yes, please … this I know I would enjoy! *smile
