A Place of Belonging

A Place of Belonging

Have you always been here beside me
or just over there, a few steps behind,

in the river that tumbles
over washed stones gleaming
and laughing shapes a wave of brilliant ochre hue?

Or have you always been above me,
in the tonal play of light and shadowed cloud of dusk,

casting rivers of silvered stars over me
as I softly breathed in dreams under a cobalt sky?

Have you always been a step ahead,
knowing the time and the reasons why

we had to cross a shadowed forest of streams
into autumn’s arms of
sienna and brushed viridian green?

I think I know – that you have always been in me,
in that place of belonging to something more,

in the sweet hand that quiet brushes an expectant canvas
and in river blue eyes that can slow all time.
