Legacy of a Rodeo Man
There’s a hundred years of history
and a hundred before that
All gathered in the thinkin’
Goin’ on beneath this hat.
And back behind his eyeballs
And pumpin’ through his veins
Is the ghost of every cowboy
That ever held the reins.
The cold flame burns within him
‘Til his skin’s as cold as ice
And the dues he paid to get here
Are worth every sacrifice.
All the miles spent sleepy drivin’
All the money down the drain,
All the “if I’s” and the “nearly’s”
All the bandages and pain.
All the female tears left dryin’,
All the fever and the fight
Are just a small down payment
On the ride he makes tonight.
It’s guts and love and glory,
One mortal’s chance at fame.
His legacy is rodeo
And cowboy is his name.
Warning: this recipe contains alcohol, consumption should be restricted to adults only!
- 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup Jack Daniel’s Whiskey
- 1 tsp maple extract
- 1 lb powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- Measure out all ingredients in advance as this fudge sets up fast.
- Heat the chocolate chips in a microwave safe container in short 20 second “bursts” until chocolate stirs and is smoothly melted. Alternately, use a pot/bowl placed over a simmering pot of water.
- Meanwhile, mix together the Jack Daniel’s Whiskey and the maple extract in a measuring cup.
- Once chocolate has melted, quickly stir in the powdered sugar, followed by the whiskey/maple extract liquid. Then stir in the walnuts.
- Quickly spoon into 9?x9? baking pan.
- Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then cut into squares.
- Allow to cool completely.
- * please note, this is a no-cook recipe and as such, has a strong alcohol content and should be ingested with caution!

The images are especially beautiful here Smidge and the recipe quite sinful….:)
Thanks so much 😀
Oh boy! These are an absolute :have-to” “must-make” Smidge. Heavenly!
🙂 Mandy
How decadent! That first photo is just amazing, and the colours and rustic nature of the recipe…. ah, you’ve outdone yourself smidge!
It sounds good with Jack Daniels 😉
The flavor was intense 😀 but mellowed later the second day.. This could be a bad habit, lol!
Best to eat them quick then 😉
WOWZER they look good !
Awwww does it have to??? 😉
This R rated fudge looks fantastic my friend! I just made a PG maple fudge which didn’t work out (a.k.a set :P) so I’m going to turn it into a dip or frosting 😉
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
This one is guaranteed to set up.. without the maple extract, I think it would set up even faster. I knew you’d like the chocolate in this one;)
Thanks you Smidge, you have spurred me on to search deep into the dark recesses of the corner cupboard for a lost bottle of JD!
You… and my son, but I don’t think he plans on baking anything with it;)
Methinks i’ll send this one to every one of my male US foodie friends! What a great post and what fun 🙂 !
I love that first image – what a stud! And what a great fudge. It looks so rich and dark and the whiskey would give it a great kick. My mother used to make something called a whiskey log and it would be covered in very dark chocolate then decorated with glace cherries cut into the shape of holly and she would wrap them up and give them to the neighbours as Christmas gifts. If she still has the recipe I’ll post them this Christmas. Anyway, that’s what your recipe reminded me of! Also, on my i-phone I received your latest comment on my blog but that comment somehow didn’t make it to my actual blog. Not sure what’s going on there but wanted to let you know so you didn’t think I deleted it! xx
I think I’ve made that log, but not with the whisky.. I think that’s a lovely change from rum-soaked fruitcake!! Don’t worry about blogging stuff.. I know you read my comments:D xoxo
Yummy!! Awesome post and images Smidge!
Absolutely loved the first photo, and the poem! Beautiful…
and the recipe… wow! Pass me a piece, will you? Maybe two? 😉
Ummm… I had to freeze it, I was going through a piece every time I passed the kitchen, lol!!
What a great post, Barb! The photo and poem just perfect for The Stampede. This fudge looks too good! When you mentioned the recipe previously, I though you’d be adding only tablespoonful or two of Jack Daniel’s. A half-cup of this wonderful elixer is an entirely different matter, to which I can only say, “Atta Girl!” 🙂
Most recipes are a tablespoon, even a teaspoon, this was a fun one for sure!! It might give a cowboy enough courage to jump on a bull!! 🙂
M m m mmmmm to the recipe and to the cowboy! 😀 Have a wonderful week Smidge!
Yee-ha! Nice poem. As soon as I saw the title the words of “Someday Soon” began to run through my head — “He loves his damned old rodeo as much as he loves me…”
I love that Baxter Black.. I’m so glad to have found his poems!
Those are some prize-taking photos m’dear! Especially that next to the last one – genius!! Tells the whole story – and that ain’t ‘ticularly easy when you’ve got a recipe this durn amazin’! I’m just awed by the entire post. You, Smidge, are a force to be reckoned with! 🙂 (I reckon!) xoxo
This was a really fun one to photograph.. I knew what I wanted it to look like and I think it came through.. As you know, I don’t often photograph “Black” and “tough” looking stuff!!
It can be so fun, so liberating, to break out of the style that’s our custom. I can tell you had such fun with it, and honestly Barb, they’re absolutely stellar photos!
Fast setting, alcoholic chocolare fudge AND a cowboy?! You are being too good to us! Now, I need to know…do we pronouce it ro-dee-oh or ro-day-oh? Want to get it right just in case I should come across a cowboy (or gal) 😉
I reckon if yer a cowgirl it would be ro-day-oh (like the Drive, lol).. but for us Canadians it’s just ro-dee-oh:D
It´s good to know!
Seriously YUM. Wow, and I’m pretty sure I could really enjoy the Jack this way. And it’s nice that it’s no cook particularly when the temperatures are soaring to the 30°C this week, again.
When will that heat wave ever end? We’ve had some rain after our week of high temperatures and I’m so glad!
Oh I think I’m making me some of this fudge!! Yum! Love the cowboy photos, absolutely beautiful, and might I say… go well with the jack and chocolate. 😉 You are a woman with many talents Smidge.
Thanks, Karista.. that’s my son, he gave me exactly 5 minutes to get the shot:D
Yum! Loved your poem and cowboy photo too!
I will have to try these…
Yes, yes, yes – PLEASE! Oh, those look so amazing!
Yee haw… to both your delicious fudge and to the cowboy! Great photos and perfect for my chocolate carving.
love this very much and I might even make them for my son’s Graduation party 🙂 only cause I want to make them xoxo
He and his friends will thank you 😀
Oh! From beginning to end a dark, passionate delight!
Oh My!
What an excellent post Barbara. I loved the pics and the recipe… well, looks out of this world.
PS. Who’s the cowboy? 😉
That’s my son.. not a cowboy in the true sense, but he’s thinking now that he’s done hockey he wants to take up Bull Riding.. sheesh!!
WOW! What a fabulous post! That fudge looks and sounds SOOOOO darn good! And how much do I love this poem Smidge? You are such a fabulous writer, I just love this! Thanks for making Monday a whole lot better dear 🙂 xoxo
I wish I could take credit for the poem, Sarah, but that’s Baxter at his finest! I haven’t had time to write poems in the last little while. I hope to rectify that!!
reminded me of my roots…and the fudge …well I just need it
Woohoo, fudge with a kick! Seems appropriate for rodeo man. Lovely poem, Smidge, and smokin’ hot photo too.. 😉
I’ll let him know 🙂
I love the rodeo man image – he’s so enigmatic. And me oh my that fudge sounds so good.
My son’s a pretty photogenic guy:D
Tall, dark, and handsome…just how I like my chocolate and cowboys 😉 I think I agree with everyone here that all the photos in this post are deeeeelish!
Hahahha.. isn’t that the truth, tall, dark and handsome… chocolate!!
What yummy, dark fudge! MMM.
Love the pictures!!! And cowboys. 🙂 As you know I’m not a big chocolate fan, but this does sound like a great mix of whiskey and chocolate. Mike would certainly enjoy this. 🙂
That is gorgeous fudge!
Fantastic no-cook recipe!
I loved the poem…will need to know a bit more about Baxter Black! 🙂 An adult fudge! I like that idea! What fun and it sounds easy, too…a winner! Thanks, Barb…you are so creative! Debra
Canadians make the best fudge, me thinks! Shall I repeat?
Your photos are fantastic…mysterious looking. The poem is fitting and the recipe…I’m waiting to get home to try making some.
Cowboy fudge. I just had a friend visiting from BC who was describing the Calgary rodeo – impressive!
Never had Jack Daniels in fudge before, but I’m willing to try.
I knew I was going to find out that was your son if i kept reading the comments – bet you had to pay him for that. How do you get those photos like that – what are you using?
Money? Heck, no, the rest of the JD, lol!! Go take a look at picmonkey.. There are all sorts of filters you can apply that make photos look different.. I could spend hours on that site!!
I am going to share this with my BIL – he will love you for it xox
Hi Barb – that sounds awesome. I never tried maple extract (don’t think I’ve seen it for sale before…) – what’s it like? I’m thinking maybe it’s like a non-syrupy, non-sweet maple syrup? Maybe I’m way off though…
It’s like vanilla extract.. But it has a really strong flavor. I think you should use 1/2 tsp to be certain of the taste for personal preference. It was my first time using as well!
You have one of the best looking blogs on WordPress, little lady!
Great work! And of course, the content is imaginative and delicious!
WOW! This is so impressive! JD recipe hits… My son, his favorite drink, 🙂 It would be nice to make a surprise to him. Thank you dear Barbara, love, nia
Oh yay! How did I miss this post on Monday? I’ve been waiting for it and now it’s bookmarked. Looks delicious as does your cowboy photo…hee, hee!
Oh man, these look scrumptious. Jack is an acquaintance of mine, one I don’t mind visiting with every now and then. 🙂
Great images, Smidge.
I’m just loving the cowboy inspired recipes Smidge !
Beautiful photos Smidge! The fudge is so sinful and so delicious looking!
Wonder who your rodeo man is .. on that photo – fantastic photo .. Forget the fudge. *smile Your photos are so delicious!!!!
I could relate to the poem coming from Texas. Loved the post and the photo…very different from your very soft images.
