{ i think there are as many variations for the Brownie…
as there are stars in the night sky. }
There are myriads of recipes and an infinite number of modifications out there for any given recipe. Isn’t it funny, though, how some recipes just seem to hit a sentimental “soft-spot” and make people want to rave as having the “only” or “proper” way for that beloved recipe to be done up “right”?
♥
{ i wonder… shouldn’t baking and cooking be as diverse as the over 7 billion people that co-exist on our planet? }
♥
On occasion I am asked what my goals are.. what I hope to accomplish with my blog.. in fact,
{ why do i blog? }
♥
well, because..
{ i love to: create . decorate . photograph . write . play . read }
♥
mostly because
{ I can’t NOT write }
Imagine living in a place where this freedom to express oneself wasn’t permitted. Where, perhaps, we couldn’t afford the luxury to create and share.
What must it be like to live in a place where every word said and written was scrutinized.
{ how blessed are we to be here together today, sharing our passion, our ideas and celebrating creativity and the brilliant achievement of others }
♥
We interrupt this post with a Public Service Announcement:
Check it out, Bloggers!! WordPress has a few new Widgets! My new favorite is “Community” where top Commenters can have their images displayed on your blog. “Top Posts & Pages” now display images of your best work. My format only shows these on my “About/Subscribe” page.. have a look and see what you think.
Now.. back to your regular programming.

Back in the kitchen… I wanted to make GF Brownies (Gluten-Free) for my friends at the hospice.. “Chocolate.. anything chocolate!” I was told. So Chocolate Brownies it would be this week, but I thought Gluten-Free might be a nice change. My grocers has an aisle dedicated to this fast growing trend and as I was scanning for Brown Rice Flour, my eyes alighted on two packages of Gluten-free Brownies.
I never buy pre-mixed, well… anything! But, this time my curiosity was piqued. “How bad could these be?” I contemplated, given I had had many successful cakes straight out of a box over the years.
But how to select between the two.. there’s always room for another Brownie, right? And so it was decided, I would bring both the Namaste Foods Brownie Mix and the Bob’s Red Mill Brownie Mix home with me.
And despite their differences, both batches met with ample praise!
♥
Namaste Foods Brownie Mix
Straight off.. you know I like anything pretty.
So I couldn’t resist the sweet little paper bag packaging. What a short and healthy list of ingredients as well.. always a huge bonus!
These were wheat/soy/corn/potato/peanuts/tree nuts/dairy/casein free
and had I substituted the eggs.. vegan as well!
Snip open the cellophane and your senses are assaulted with a heavenly chocolaty fragrance… but you must promise to resist the urge to stick your nose too deeply into the bag!!
These were just like my Easy Bake Oven days.. just mix together with an egg, some oil and water and scrape into the pan. Namaste has a dense, fudgy sugary batter that demanded some paddle licking at the end.
These baked up nicely but was like cement to cut out once it cooled. I was not pleased to have scratched up my pan with my knife trying to get these puppies out! They had to be left to their own devices overnight and ta-da… the next day they were easy to slice (as long as I left those crusty “cookie” sides in the pan). This brownie came out with a shiny, crackly top… the way I think a great brownie should!
Bob’s Red Mill Brownie Mix
Well, Bob, no points for packaging here!
The cellophane bag was designed to “see” inside, but really? It’s just a bunch of brown powder!
Here’s the list of ingredients.. if I have difficulty with the pronunciation of some, it tends to make me wary of the product I’m ingesting.
Making this recipe was definitely more work because it required the addition of butter and GF vanilla as well. There was no heavenly chocolate assault to the senses when opening up the bag. No delightful batter temptation when scraping out the bowl. In fact, it was pretty “blase” at this point.
Once baked, though, this brownie really came to life!! It had a cake-like fine texture.. I know some of you love a cake-style brownie and if so, this one is for you! The resulting flavor was very surprisingly full of chocolate and not too sweet. In fact, I think I preferred the flavor of this one more.
So.. in the end, which one would I choose? That’s a tough decision.. really, I think Bob should go hang out over at Namaste. Together they would have made the perfect Brownie!
As for me.. I’m going to hang-out at some of my Gluten-Free Baker’s blogs and see if I can find a “From Scratch” GF Brown Recipe to borrow for next time!
Yum! Who knew a mix would turn out so well???
I love the new widgets and am considering putting them on my blog!
I know, eh? I guess things have improved since I was a teenager baking cakes from boxes… that was a while ago 😀
I cannot eat brownies but I’m with you on I want to ingest things I know and can pronounce!
I think that’s the main reason I like to just bake/cook my own meals. You must be an awesome cook yourself!!
Pound cakes I do awesome the rest? You won’t die from eating it 😉 xo
I gotta check those widgets… hope I can find them… 😉
loved the brownies, and your statement “I can’t NOT write” – says it all…
Hey.. if you get lost, send me an email! Yes, I figure when I stop writing, I’ve said all I wanted to say.. kind of like when Forest Gump stopped running, lol!
Just enabled a few new widgets. Thanks for the info. Brownies? Oh yeah….
These look silky and sumptuous, Smidge! xx
A couple of years ago, I bought the Bob’s Red Mill brownie mix as part of a Christmas basket for a GF friend and she LOVED the brownie mix. I’ve bought Bob’s other products but never the mixes to make for ourselves, so these reviews are great. Thanks.
I’m a little confused (don’t worry, it happens a lot) about the WordPress feature. When I went to your about page, it’s all your photos and not your top commentators, is that the way it’s supposed to be?
It shows up in the widget sidebar.. On the right hand column of every page except my posts. (which is annoying too!) I hope it’s there..

Tooooooo hot to bake. What’s a gal to do? I’m licking my screen and hungry for browniessssss. You teach me much re: widgets, etc. Now I just got to put on the techy nerd hat and see what I can do. In the meantime I’ll drive to town later and buy a brownie in the air conditioned café and think of you!
Hahaha.. now you have to windex your screen! So sorry to hear you’re still in a heat wave.. sending you cool breezes from Canada… xo
I really am anti-mix but these make me re-think that 🙂
I am as well! I just wondered what’s been happening in the old “mix” section since I was in my 20’s, lol!
This is so timely! I am making brownies for a baby shower this week and I too just tried the Bob’s Red Mill brand last night to see if it would work for everyone. I thought it was very good, wondered if anyone would really be able to tell the difference if they didn’t know it was GF! I appreciate your testing of the other brand, as I also wondered if there was a better choice (even as good as these are), but didn’t have time to try another one. As I said, very timely for me, thanks Smidge!
BTW– I have so missed reading along on your blog and realized I still needed to follow up with you by email from weeks ago, as the whole wildfire business was a major life interrupter. Promise I’ll get back in the groove again soon!
Oh, Judy.. don’t even worry about that! I was just curious about going to wordpress.org.. I think .com offers me enough for now so I’m staying put. More importantly.. I’m so sorry to hear about your wildfires.. I’ve been following this story on the news. Is everything all right with you and your family and friends??
Some friends lost their homes, many dd not, ours was spared too. We are so grateful and at the same time grieved by the losses and black hillside reminder. The surprising part is how long it has seemed to take for life to settle-out after returning home. However, all is well with us, thank you for asking. 🙂
How beautiful your post… This is your amazing and creative world and I love to be in this… I mean to visit your blog and your posts… The words, the colours, decorations of all these delicious recipes and your beautiful touches of your heart… I just wanted to be there and to finish all of them 🙂 I am sure you wouldn’t have stopped me… Thank you dear Barbara, love, nia
I never would, nia.. as I also love to visit yours:) xx Smidge
Thanks for all the brownie research – life is tough eh?! And I love the community button, am going to see if I can get one too 🙂
Isn’t it more fun to see the little faces instead of a list? WordPress is getting some of this stuff right!
I have had the Bob’s and I do think it’s good. A friend of mine in chemo treatment was taken off all gluten…that’s when I found the mix so that we could lift her spirits with chocolate! The brownies were a hit!! I’m curious about the community button. I have a lot of work I need to do on my blog…like seriously update my blogroll! The beauty of your pages really inspires me to find the time to be a bit more creative! Debra
I like that this is different from a blogroll.. it’s the community of commenters.. people like you that are showcased.. that means that statistics and wordpress generates the photos, not me. So it couldn’t be simpler and I don’t have to update!
I’ve used Bob’s Red Mill flours before but never a mix. Both of these sound delicious, Barb, especially being GF. These products have come a long way in the last few years. I’ve a cousin living a GF lifestyle and she’ll appreciate this post. About 2 years ago, I sent her a GF brownie recipe from Emeril. If you’re interested, I’ll send it to you, too.
It’s very kind of you to bake not just one but two batches of brownies for your friends at the hospice. And, thank you for the info about the new widgets. It would have taken me ages to find them. I don’t go to the widget page often and probably should. Foolishly, I think that WordPress is going to send us some sort of notification about these things. When will I ever learn?
I’d love that Emeril recipe, John! I’ve promised the people at the hospice I’d make one from scratch.. and I always keep my promises! I always wonder about food trends.. this is the latest one for sure and excellent for people celiac. I am curious why others would eat GF when they aren’t diagnosed celiac? It seems a trend in addition to being a necessity. Maybe it’s perceived as healthier??
I found a page that does WordPress announcements and updates. I clicked to follow it like any other blog and that’s how I found out. If I can find it again, I’ll add the link for you!
Here it is.. then just “Follow” http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/07/17/more-widgets-for-your-blog/
This post contains good information for gluten-free folks. I’ll pass it along to a few I know. Thanks.
My mouth is watering – good thing I have a few brownies left in the pan at home:) Have a Wonderful Day!
Mmmm a mix makes these brownies look like goddess worthy 😀
They look absolutely delicious!
And thank you for the WordPress tip – check that out tonight!
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
Just love this post…going to pick up one or the other at my natural food store later…thanks for doing all that testing and you never told me how you take such beautiful food photos…looks like natural light?
I’m so sorry.. I’m sporadic with responding to comments these days because we were on the road heading to our place at the lake. Crazy busy days lately with work as well! I always use natural light. I used to think direct sun was the best, but have since learned ambient sun is best.. like on the east side of my house when the sun is in the west. I have one kitchen window that works great as well. If it’s dark early (living in Canada, eh?) then I boost the light using software like http://www.picmonkey.com or http://www.pixlr.com express… xx Smidge
Thanks Barbara, they are very beautiful and yes, ambient light is my favorite too…thanks for the tip on the software…will come in handy!!!
They do look AWFULLY good, Smidge! Oh yes.
Smidge, the Namaste folks should pay you and use that photo of their bag in their marketing!
Ahhh.. wouldn’t that be cool?! I’d pay them, lol!!
I do love how you described the one from Namaste and definitely the packaging is so superior that I would definitely choose that product. But I’d make it the day before I needed the brownies because of the cement issue. I don’t think I’d buy Bob’s because I prefer my brownies to not appear too much like a cake and I don’t think the colour of his brownie is dark enough. Like you, best to visit some GF blogs and see what can be made from scratch. However, I bet these were very much appreciated at the hospice xx
I’ve been searching around a few GF blogs.. and haven’t settled on one in particular yet! They loved them! Because I had made two batches there were leftovers for the staff as well:D
Smidge, I am so happy there are more and more Just A Smidgen posts showing up in my inbox these days. Simply put, I really enjoy your blog…..and I’m very happy that you “can’t NOT write.” Because when you do, it cheers my day.
Gluten-free brownies! I will have to look for one or the other of these at our health food store. They look incredibly good!
Decisions , decisions on the Brownie, but is amazing what packaging can do for the first impressions…You will have some very happy lucky recipients of your baking testing. Thanks for the tip on wordpress. I think it would be really nice if wordpress gave us updates on changes they are making.
I mentioned to John that I “Follow” a wordpress page that publishes these updates. I found them a short while ago. When I find their page again, I’ll post the link so you can be in the loop too:D
Here’s the link http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/07/17/more-widgets-for-your-blog/
Thanks Smidge! Have a great day. BAM
How delicious do these look???
I’ll have to pass on your reviews to my GF friends. 🙂 And I do like the new widgets – makes me feel famous to see my pic on there. 🙂
I know, eh?! Cute to see all your faces!!
Well now I did get a notification from WP about the new widgets, then couldn’t find them…must look again! These brownies look great…I like cakey, but like the sound of the Namaste better! Just had someone asking me about GF recipes today, so hope you’ll post if you find a good from scratch one, Barb!
Here’s the link to the post Then you can just Follow for the latest news:D
http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/07/17/more-widgets-for-your-blog/
Actually after I read your post and commented, I went back and found them….thanks so much! 🙂
Gooey, gorgeous and perfect for a mid week treat. I’ve seen these are quite popular on Pinterest today 😉 thanks for the heads up on the new widgets too, v exciting!
Hahaha.. I didn’t know they were, I’ve got to go take a peek! xx
I love the community widget! Have a super day Smidge and enjoy trying out all the brownie recipes xox
There are a lot of people who will argue about the ‘right’ recipe till the cows come home. It’s all a state of mind isn’t it? Every recipe has a story behind it, just as personal as each one of us. I’m glad to know there are people who think the way I do.
By the way, just noticed you are ‘Barbara’. In my head, you instantly became Barbara Smidge.
I think we think alike;) And yes.. it’s the story behind the recipe that interests me just as much! Too funny.. You can call me Barbara Smidge if you like.. but my real middle name is Barbara June.. xx
Thanks for sharing! Really hope I can do something like that! =)
I was just reading about the new Widgets! I’m hoping later today I’ll have time to add them to my blog. It’s always exciting when they come up with something new.
Namaste is by far my favorite GF brownie mix! I haven’t tried Bob’s as he sometimes uses a lot of bean flour in his mixes. You have to be in a certain type of mood to enjoy bean flour…sometimes it just has a weird taste. I do use his all purpose flour (which has garbanzo beans) for banana bread. It always turns out amazingly moist. Have you tried his cornbread mix? It is unbelievable. It also has a cake like texture.
Namaste also has a very good spice cake mix…
Have a lovely day, Smidge~ April
I’ve been bugging them about doing a Pinterest Live Feed with photos.. but to no avail:P As I mentioned on your blog.. do you have a GF Brownie recipe on your blog?? xx Smidge
No, I don’t have a GF recipe on my blog. I usually just use the Namaste mix because it is so easy and so delicious. 🙂
Drats.. you were my first “go to” source for a recipe:) I’ll let you know if I find anything worthy of posting!
Please do!
I love that you did some of that nasty ground work for us Smidge, sampling fudge-y and cake-y brownies so we don’t have to! 🙂 Even licking the “paddle” to save us from that too! You are altogether to good to us! 🙂 I almost never buy packaged foods either but on rare surprise occasions it is kind of nice to crack an egg, add some oil and bake. I’ll stay tuned though for your next installment! And thanks too for the heads-up – I need to check out those new nifty little widgets! xoxo
Wheh.. *wiping forehead covered in flour*, spree.. I can’t begin to tell you how much work that was.. tasting, thinking, tasting again, over and over until I knew I got it right;) You’re so funny, spree!! xxx
i made some brownies myself recently and I agree with you…there aren’t enough brownie recipes in the world! I like fidgier brownies better, though mine were leaning more towards the cakey side. Te Namaste brownie batter looks so dense and gorgeous! I bet the tapioca flour gave it quite an interesting consistency. Thanks for sharing the GF brownie mixes! It’s always nice to read about the myriad options we have in the packaged food section these days.
I would love to see what you do with a brownie recipe.. I’m sure you’d tweak it and make it so awesome.. I’m curious if you’d add some unusual spices?? xx
BROWNIESSSS!! I love BOTH of these brands..they are amazing! These brownies wouldn’t last a day in my house!
And I need to start running!! If I’m going to keep baking these little treats!! lol!! xx
Yum. I’ve tried a few of the GF mixes–and they’re all so different. I was so surprised that the GF Betty Crocker one was good (although I’m not sure how pure the ingredients are). Thanks for another recommendation! 🙂
I didn’t see a Betty Crocker mix or I would definitely have given Betty a shot at the title, lol! I think we get some of these products later in Canada, unfortunately! xx
My kids (and Mike) would adore these brownies. And I’m going to have to check out this new wordpress feature. 🙂 I thought of you over the weekend. Miss A took a little pony ride and it reminded me of your cowboy posts. She looked quite natural as a little cowgirl!
I hope you got a photo of Miss A.. nothing cuter than a little cowgirl on a pony!! I wonder if that will influence where she wants to travel next.. 😀 xxx
Great post Smidge! Would be interesting to know if you payed extra for the ‘nicer’ packaging!
Wow.. Now why didn’t I think of that?! You know, I’m going to go check that out, I bet ya’ I did!! Darn it.. Why is pretty always more expensive??!!
Well, there’s a coincidence. My sister has just learned her four year old son may benefit from a gluten free diet and we thought that would take all the fun out of life…and here you are with brownies to demonstrate that this is not so, Barbara, Thank you! I must send my sister the link!
I was skeptical after making some dreadful banana muffins. I think the key is to avoid rice flour (for me).. But I’m about to try some made with Brown Rice Flour and I think this might be ok.. I’ll let you know:)
The brownies look delicious, and thanks for the information on those new WP widgets! Just added the community box to my own site — very cool.
I’m grateful for the web so that anyone can express themselves! And the brownies look so delicious and light.
Thanks for keeping an eye what happens on wordpress – have to check that out .. managed to get music on to my blog yesterday. Love the way you change the head photo with the posts item. You’re very talent and have an eye for details. And of course I don’t like brownies.
Wow… I wondered where the music was coming from! Do you mind telling me how to do this??
Wov … Barbara! You have to join SoundCloud. Download tracks on SoundCloud. When you done that .. I will lead you through the rest.
I’m glad I waited so long to read this because I was on the hunt for something GF for guests tonight to go with raspberry basil sorbet. Bingo. I think I can get Bob’s here on Orcas. Thanks!!
We need to invent a taste button. I absolutely love these!! Delicious 🙂
What truly motivated u to post “Gluten-Free Brownie Smack-Down and a WordPress Announcement | Barbara Bamber”?
I reallygenuinely enjoyed it! Thanks ,Marlon
Hi there, I do believe your website might be having web browser compatibility issues.
When I take a look at your website in Safari, it looks fine however, when opening in IE, it has some overlapping issues.
I simply wanted to give you a quick heads up! Aside from
that, excellent site!
Where is it overlapping?
