We’ve got Snow in April again!
and like little butterflies, we’re all waiting to shed our winter coats and fly away from our cocoons.
Back when I did a makeover of my studio, I saw a pretty Butterfly Shadow Box at Steeling Home, but I just couldn’t get my head around the thought of those tiny creatures being captured in a box for all eternity.
{ I think there’s a Fairy Tale in there somewhere }
Anyhow, I knew there had to be another way.
Then I saw a little craft at Young House Love that set my heart a Flutter. It was done with butterflies cut out from a brochure. I wanted something a little more artsy so I changed it up.
I thought I was so original and creative, turns out this craft’s been done before.
But no matter, it was original and creative for me, totally fun and easy to make.. and that’s all that matters, right?
I’ve had this particular Shadow Box for.. well, forever and it was home to a collection of rocks. It desperately needed a make-over and some color.
I’m not a scrap booker with a fancy paper-cutting machine. So I was delighted to find this pretty butterfly punch from Martha Stewart that makes solid and cut-out butterflies, so that added lots of possibilities.
{ You might remember my Valentine Heart punch from this craft. }
{ I was also thrilled to have a 40% off any one item coupon at Michael’s. There’s an app you can add to your phone that automatically finds the latest discounts for you.}
I picked up a few Springy pieces of scrap book paper that all had varying hues, an analogous color palette and in a variety of patterns.
I’m imagining this redone in different color palettes.. aqua, blues and whites for the lake.
Pinks, peaches and papers with romantic handwriting for a wedding table.
Pinks or blues for Baby Showers.
I will probably change this up in a few months when summer comes.. although right now it’s hard to imagine it ever will!
There are so many places you can go with this craft.
My pins were just a packet of pretty pearl tipped bouttonniere (phew, had to google that spelling) pins.
Enjoy!
They are so beautiful!
Thanks, Tandy!
How pretty! This would look gorgeous in my daughters nursery, thank you for sharing x
I think it would be perfect in a nursery, Lisa!
I love love love the colors you chose for your project. They really say “spring” to me!
Bring on spring!xx
wow. your unlimited talents astound me!!!
As does yours, mimi! xx
I’m a big YHL fan. So fun to see this different take on their shadowbox. This is so cheerful and pretty, Smidge.
Thanks, Ashley!
I did that same project for my son’s 5th grade class. I had them color in the butterflies and then I pinned them into a shadow box. Then I used their names and converted them into
“Latin.” We auctioned it off and I bought it! It is hanging on my wall!
So cute!
Good for you.. my friend just asked if she could buy mine, but I would have a clue what to ask? I’d love to see a photo of yours, Susie!
What a beautiful craft Barbara, I am so sorry that you go snow, it’s shameful. Temperatures are heading upward this week and all I can think of is FINALLY!
Well.. today.. I almost didn’t need a coat, but not quite, lol! Glad your weather is better, Eva!
Love it, Barbara. I would maybe put them on a pinboard. D’you know I might even be able to manage this craft! Wonders will never cease.
Jo, you crack me up!! Yes.. you could do this, it’s so easy!
This is so pretty, Barbara! This looks like the kind of craft I like to do. I love picking out scrapbook paper. So much fun. 🙂
Me too, Coleen, there are so many pretty scrapbook papers, I just don’t have enough crafts to use them. I’m not really into card making or scrap booking either.
What a lovely and sweet project! I think the butterflies are cheery, and depending upon the paper chosen, would be nice in a variety of settings–from an office to a child’s room. I would find it relaxing and somewhat therapeutic to create these lovely butterflies! 🙂 Lovely, Smidge!
You’re right about that, Deb, it was fun and def relaxing to make:D Anything simple is so meditative, isn’t it?
What beautiful butterflies!
What a cute craft project that will certainly brighten a room while we wait for the warmth of spring.
Hi Barbara, these butterflies are so pretty and cheerful, would decorate any place. I hope spring will be upon you soon, we’ve just finally got a warm break a few days ago, and hopefully it’s to stay.
I love your new website look, Barb! The butterfly shadowbox is gorgeous. And I know just what you mean about not wanting to use real ones. I ran across the most gorgeous earrings a while back that had butterfly wings set in silver. My friend loves butterflies and although “no live butterflies were used” in the making of the earrings…I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Now I’ll need to figure out how to improvise like you did!
Have a lovely day~ April 🙂
Hey, thanks, April! I keep changing it all the time. I get bored so quickly! I can’t imagine butterfly earrings?? Every time they brushed my cheeks I’d be reminded… (shivering).
Dear Barb,
These little flutters are beautiful and so creative.
My favourite would be the one with the big red dot. So unique, she stands out among the others and I reckon she should take the spot right in the middle.
I love this! And I SO agree about the fairy tale in a box of pinned (formerly live) butterflies. Makes me sad.
Hello Barbara, I am so enjoying your blog. I have always admired creative talented people. I do dabble a little and I am an artist so your posts help to motivate me. thank you Lyn
