You all know I’ve been investigating grocery store chain food pricing.. well wait ’til you read this:

Two days ago, Superstore had SunRype Apple Juice ( 1 Liter ) on sale..
right at the front where you walk in, stacked in those BIG bins to catch your eye..
because they’re the items with a BIG discount..

for 99 cents!

So I bought a few.
{ That’s not the story.. stay with me. }

Today when I walked into Superstore..
well, gosh if those 1 Liter SunRype Apple Juice boxes weren’t still there..

right at the front where you walk in, stacked in those BIG bins to catch your eye..
because they’re the items with a BIG discount..
I thought I might just pick up a few more until I saw the price..

$1.48

Yeah.. just two days and 50% higher.

I guess that’s how Superstore recoups money lost on their BIG discounts?

Yup, wait a day or two and add back 50% and leave those 1 Liter SunRype Juice boxes in the exact same bins..
because everyone knows customers are so busy with two screaming kids in a shopping cart
they probably won’t notice they aren’t the same price as they were two days ago.

They might just assume that the price was still .99
because a grocery story wouldn’t try to pull a fast one on their loyal customers.. would they?

Does any grocery store really have to play such silly games with their pricing?

Sometimes I just “mash up” my recipes..
figuring out new ways to combine two or more of my favorite dishes.

That’s how this one came about.

The flavors just make so much sense together once I thought about it
and now it’s a family favorite:)

Mulligatawny Turkey Meatloaf

Mulligatawny Turkey Meatloaf

minced turkey or chicken
juicy apple chunks
cooked rice, carrots, celery
curry, ginger, chinese 5 spice, coriander

… essentially the same ingredients you’d find in my Mulligatawny Soup Recipe
but in a light loaf that can be served with a salad for dinner.

and using rice instead of bread crumbs..

means this recipe is Gluten-Free!

Did I mention the glaze?

chili sauce, apple cider, honey, brown sugar
a lovely flavor combination

Gluten~Free Mulligatawny Turkey Meatloaf

Ingredients
Turkey Meatloaf
  • 1/2 cup uncooked jasmine (or white) rice
  • 1 kg turkey or chicken, ground
  • 1/2 cup sweet white onion diced
  • 2-3 small sweet carrots grated
  • 1-3 celery stalks diced
  • 3 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tsp Chinese 5 spice
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp coriander
  • 1 small apple diced
  • 2 tsp sriracha, or to taste
  • 1 egg, whisked
Glaze
  • 1/2 cup chili sauce
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 325F.
  2. Lightly spray two loaf pans with cooking spray.
  3. Cook 1/2 cup jasmine rice in water as per instructions. Set aside to cool.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey through to the egg, mixing until well blended. Add the rice and combine thoroughly.
  5. Press into the prepared loaf pans and put into the oven to bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the center is no longer pink or raw. (I just poke a knife into the center to check.
  6. About 5 minutes before the turkey meatloaf is done, mix together the glaze ingredients in a small bowl and spoon over the meatloaves, spreading to cover the tops completely. Then finish baking.
