You all know I’ve been investigating grocery store chain food pricing.. well wait ’til you read this:
Two days ago, Superstore had SunRype Apple Juice ( 1 Liter ) on sale..
right at the front where you walk in, stacked in those BIG bins to catch your eye..
because they’re the items with a BIG discount..
for 99 cents!
So I bought a few.
{ That’s not the story.. stay with me. }
Today when I walked into Superstore..
well, gosh if those 1 Liter SunRype Apple Juice boxes weren’t still there..
right at the front where you walk in, stacked in those BIG bins to catch your eye..
because they’re the items with a BIG discount..
I thought I might just pick up a few more until I saw the price..
$1.48
Yeah.. just two days and 50% higher.
I guess that’s how Superstore recoups money lost on their BIG discounts?
Yup, wait a day or two and add back 50% and leave those 1 Liter SunRype Juice boxes in the exact same bins..
because everyone knows customers are so busy with two screaming kids in a shopping cart
they probably won’t notice they aren’t the same price as they were two days ago.
They might just assume that the price was still .99
because a grocery story wouldn’t try to pull a fast one on their loyal customers.. would they?
Does any grocery store really have to play such silly games with their pricing?
Does Superstore really have to play such silly games with their customers??

On a more positive note.. check out my friend Celia’s blog where she writes about “Living Within Our Means”.
This beautiful blogger from down under takes Food Thrifting to a whole other level!

Well, enough ranting for now.. breath, Smidge, breath..

I love whipping up new recipes in the kitchen..
Sometimes I just “mash up” my recipes..
figuring out new ways to combine two or more of my favorite dishes.
That’s how this one came about.
The flavors just make so much sense together once I thought about it
and now it’s a family favorite:)
Mulligatawny Turkey Meatloaf
minced turkey or chicken
juicy apple chunks
cooked rice, carrots, celery
curry, ginger, chinese 5 spice, coriander
… essentially the same ingredients you’d find in my Mulligatawny Soup Recipe
but in a light loaf that can be served with a salad for dinner.
and using rice instead of bread crumbs..
means this recipe is Gluten-Free!
Did I mention the glaze?
chili sauce, apple cider, honey, brown sugar
a lovely flavor combination

{ Now there’s a first.. only one photo today! }
- 1/2 cup uncooked jasmine (or white) rice
- 1 kg turkey or chicken, ground
- 1/2 cup sweet white onion diced
- 2-3 small sweet carrots grated
- 1-3 celery stalks diced
- 3 tsp curry powder
- 1 tsp thyme
- 1 tsp Chinese 5 spice
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/2 tsp coriander
- 1 small apple diced
- 2 tsp sriracha, or to taste
- 1 egg, whisked
- 1/2 cup chili sauce
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- Preheat oven to 325F.
- Lightly spray two loaf pans with cooking spray.
- Cook 1/2 cup jasmine rice in water as per instructions. Set aside to cool.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey through to the egg, mixing until well blended. Add the rice and combine thoroughly.
- Press into the prepared loaf pans and put into the oven to bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the center is no longer pink or raw. (I just poke a knife into the center to check.
- About 5 minutes before the turkey meatloaf is done, mix together the glaze ingredients in a small bowl and spoon over the meatloaves, spreading to cover the tops completely. Then finish baking.
I don’t know if you Superstore is the same as my superstore — but I have caught them doing the same thing. Drives me insane!
As for the recipe. I love these flavours… as a vegetarian though I’d sub-out the chicken.. which means it wouldn’t technically be meatloaf, but trust me lentil loaf is still good. 🙂
Now that’s a loaf I’d love to try.. is it on your blog, Trish?
I love this recipe, Barbara… Long time ago I used to make a carrot soup that was slightly thickened with rice (the rice was added raw and cooked with the soup). I never added cooked rice to a meat loaf preparation, but I imagine it works wonders, and all the flavors of this loaf appeal to me
I am pinning you… ;-))))))
Good morning, Sally! I was thinking of adding uncooked rice but was worried that it wouldn’t cook up enough.. and there are days I have extra cooked rice to use up:) Thanks so much and have an awesome Tuesday!xx
Oh, you are absolutely right, I don’t think the rice would cook inside the meat loaf if you added it raw… not enough moisture, I don’t think.
Now I cannot stop thinking of this meat loaf, I must put it on my list for next week’s menu!
The superstores get is mad all the time with their pricing games. Our superstore claims they will match competitors ad pricing but that is not true. I had a checkout person tell me she could not match Targets price (I had the Target ad pages) because it was lower than customary, what the heck is customary? Why do advertise they will match pricing? I had to get the front supervisor involved, then the store manager to get the price match and he still didn’t want to do it. I got a lot of stories like this at our local superstore. Terrible customer service!:-(
Your recipe looks great Barbara!
Smidge, I must confess to never having made a meatloaf of any sort before. Your turkey one sounds absolutely heavenly!
Oh the supermarkets know how to catch people – how rude!
Have a super day Smidge and it really was strange only seeing one photo today.
🙂 Mandy xo
I love the “mash up” concept — such a great way to come up with new recipes! This is such comfort food for these long cold days this time of year! 🙂
Thanks for a great idea. I was thinking about meat loaf this week and the seasoning looks yummy!
Thank you for the shout out, Smidge! And aren’t you clever, I never thought of using cooked rice in a meatloaf – I always have leftover rice, and this would be a perfect thing to do with it! xx
The meatloaf looks great! I love the addition of apple. I’ve pinned this to make at a later date.
I don’t shop at Superstore, Walmart or any of those for my groceries. We have a new Thrify Food store in our town and I love it. They have great sales and they are conveniently small, so, it doesn’t take an hour to get through it. Plus they carry a huge variety for a smaller store.
Looks meaty and delicious.
That same thing has happened to us…. only it wasn’t till we got home that we realized the price had risen… ‘once burned though twice shy’…. We won’t be caught again… Diane
It happens here too. More and more you have to be on high alert when visiting the supermarket because they are out to get you! What a great meatloaf. So much flavour here and I love the sound of the glaze. I’ll pin this so I remember to make it xx
WOAH that looks insanely delicious ! Who’d have thought apple juice in a meatloaf recipe (although I have to admit I’ve never made meatloaf of any kind so you’ve given me a reason now to try !)
Meat Loaf must be a thing these days because I’ve seen a lot of blogging about it. Sadly, I’ve never been a fan, although I really should revisit. Even though my dear Mom was a wonderful cook, she made the worst meatloaf ever. What’s even worse is that the Hungarians put whole hard boiled eggs into the centre…fast forward to baking the loaf so the meat is cooked and you get a really rubbery egg. Not nice at all. I love the flavours of Mulligatawny so this flavour profile would be something I enjoy…
Meaty and so warming, this is so delicious 😀
Cheers
CCU
All stores play games with pricing, but the superstores seem to be the worst. We check prices constantly, and shop at several different places. Hard to keep up sometimes, though. Anyway, love the idea of this meatloaf. What great flavor it must have! Thanks so much.
Now that is really a clever recipe! I love Mulligatawny Soup so this has to be a delicious meatloaf. You are so creative…but then I say that every time I visit. LOL!
Your meatloaf looks so moist … yummy. I would do with chicken .. not a turkey fan. That is was discounts are all about – over here they are on for a week. That’s why they gets offers from the suppliers – when they have too mush stock.
I shop a lot on discount – a bargain shopper.
I wish you a great weekend.
Thats a really nice looking recipe you have in there
